the old and the new :) by anna-m What I liked most about this city was the beautiful mixture of the old and the new: tall buildings and shopping centres standing side by side with picturesque old churces and houses
What I allways remember with a smile is a stroll through the old town during a quiet summer afternoon, taking in its architecture, its cosy narrow streets of stone, its shops, cafes and restaurants....To me, the old town is what Nicosia is all about Leave a Comment

Ledra Street by Loubna If you are thinking of visiting Nicosia then avoid the months of July and August. As the town is in the valley between two mountain ranges it becomes an oven. As an example during that time of the year it can easily be around 36 degrees at 9.00am in the morning and 40 something in the afternoon. Most locals would leave Nicosia during the weekend. It is nearly impossible to be outside between 11.00 and 16.00. So to make the most of your time here, try to visit in May/early June or September/October Leave a Comment

by cheekymarieh In June 2001 I was fortunate enough to have a trip over to Cyprus to attend my friend's wedding in the centre of Nicosia. It was a traditional Orthodox wedding followed by a reception in the grounds of the church and later a hotel reception for close friends and family. It was an amazing sight. Leave a Comment

by tvdm see the Green Line. Although it is a sad thing that it still exists, it is the only remnant left in the world of how a country can just be split in half - even through the capital! It is not dangerous to roam around the border, and you can cross over to the Turkish part for an afternoon. Be sure not to mess with the UN-soldiers, just in case! Leave a Comment

OK, apart from the green line and the archaeological museum there arenīt many places to visit in Nicosia, but what I really like is to walk in the old city when the sun is down and also to the area of Fammagousta gate.
My fondest memory of Nicosia is the 4 years of being student in that city. Especially the periods after the exams and before I return to my birthplace were really cool. Also the excavations in which I participated from 5 to 17 June of 2000 to a place outside of Nicosia, ancient Idalion. Leave a Comment

Nicosia is an ancient city. It is well worth the time to spend exloring it. A deep moat surrounds the old city and it is there that I used to play field hockey and football(the real game where you kick the ball with your feet, hence the name 'football'. I made many friends in Nicosia among both the Greeks and Turks. They are really delightful people and it is a great tragedy that they have been unable to resolve their differences. In Nicosia a visit to Metaxas Square is worthwhile if only to study the architecture and cafe's. Of course it is a long while since I last saw Cyprus but I remember well sitting in an outdoor cafe sipping commanderia which is a desset wine and a speciality of Cyprus. As a British soldier I was stationed in Cyprus and after the Egyptian desert it was as if I had died and gone to heaven. A bus trip from Nicosia to Famagusta will take you through miles and miles of some of the finest vineyards you will ever hope to see. When you arrive in Famagusta be sure to visit the Cathedral where Richard the Lion Heart was married. If you lift up the rugs on the floor (it is now a mosque) you will see the names of some of the Crusaders. The beaches are great and by now I'm sure that there are many hotels to stay at. One of my memories of Cyprus is that of sitting in an outdoor cinema eating one of the largest oranges I have ever seen. Cyprus is rich in the type of fruits it produces, among them are oranges, lemons, grapefruit, apricots and many other delectable items. In the bars and restaurants they have a delightful habit of serving you food when you order a drink. Cypriots think it necessary to eat if you are going to drink alcohol. Some of the best brandy I have ever tasted is made in Cyprus. Must be the grapes. Should you visit Troodos Mountain, on the way is a lovely little village called Kocapatria. I stayed there one night many years ago on my way to a ski camp. Incidentally, I learned to ski in Cyprus. The best time to visit is in the Spring or Autumn of the year. It can be extremely hot in the Summer. I would like to go back to Cyprus if only to show my wife many of the wonderful places I was familiar with. Larnacca is a lovely place and there is a wonderful monastery called Bellapaise (I think that's how it is spelt). The archeological sites are of course a must. Should you go, I'm sure that you would not be disappointed. Leave a Comment

by STEFY_20 As a friend of mine said when you visit a country you should try to get in touch with its inhabitants not only see the museums and static attractions because a country isn't a big open air museum,so I let people who live there give tips.I only suggest to look very carefully around as there are a lot of interesting things to see.
The people here resembles so much to my own people and even the art has so much in common that I felt at home.I saw hand-made work and for a moment I thought I was in my country.

COMMUNICATIONS: get a cell SIM CARD from CYTA, it is called SOEASY and costs 20 CYP (and very easy, ask the seller to turn the instructions into English) . All numbers beginning by "2" are "fixed line" numbers, cheaper to call, and the ones starting with a "9" are mobile numbers. INTERNET: cyber cafes: none preferred, they are all expensive. However, if you are in Limassol, and want to eat at "Agostino restaurant" (cheap and good) you can use internet for free! An other FREE place in Nicoisa, next to the Hilton (passed the Hilton when going towards the old city) on Makarios Ave (almost in front of the gas station) is the YOUTH CENTER where internet is FREE of charge. The only thing is that they have 10 computers, and you're only aloud 30mn, but if there is no one waiting, you can stay longer. You need to be under 35 years old. It is open from 10 am to 10 pm! I t's full of Lebanese and Egyptian people, have arabic music in the back groung... You can either sit inside, or outside... real nice in the evening...
