the municipal market: fresh fruits & vegetables with a dash of spice

This indoor market ws built in 1932 and retains a certain character. First of all it is busy and there are many people around. Secondly are the many wonderful sights and smells for the market. Fresh fruit and vegetables plus many household items. The prices are very low, as this is where the locals still shop. It has not yet turned into a touristy farmer's market with high mark-ups, handmade arts & crafts and no locals. Sound familar? Well, here you will still find the real thing.

According to the Metrolpolitan Museum, Cypriots have been working with copper since the 4th Millenium B.C. That is a long time to develop and perfect a craft. The word copper comes from the Greek word Kupros which is the name the Greeks first gave the island of Cyprus. Now, I am not sure how big a collector of souvenirs you may be, but I do know that lugging pots & pans made of metal is bulky, heavy and sometime impractical. However, you may still want something typical of the island which is also easy to carry. My suggestion is to buy one the the Turkish coffee pots, also called Cypriot coffee pots by the Greeks, which are so common and still in daily use in this area of the world. Generally, they are smaller bowls made of heavy copper, they have long handles, either made of metal or wood, and are used to heat strong coffee over an open flame or on a stove.
