Walking down a back street or alley behind St. Nicolas Cathedral and you will find there are many narrow lanes, not unlike in Wapping and East London, which are full of small workshops. Many of these brick lanes end at a simple wall which blocks access from either direction. You have reached the Green Line, the UN buffer zone between Cyprus and the Republic of Northern Cyprus. The security forces are very sensitive about photography in the area, so use common sense. The people's anxiety and emotions still run quite high and are very strong about the underlying reasons and possible solutions to the conflict. Therefore, as tourist you should be sensitive to the conflict and not try to side with one side or the other without all the facts and in their proper historical context, despite what your hosts from either side of Nicosia may tell you.
