Dessert of Heaven, Ekmek Kadayifi

by Arkeolog

I like a lot of things in Cyprus. But Ekmek(bread in Turkish) Kadayifi is a great taste to me. "Kadayif", is also known as "Ekmek Kadayifi", is one of the oldest Turkish Cypriot deserts on the island of Cyprus. Today Ekmek Kadayifi is a well known dessert of the Turkish Cypriot cuisine. If you visit a Turkish Cypriot house, you will be offered a traditional Turkish coffee followed by an "Ekmek Kadayifi". If you wish ekmek kadayifi can be served cold with an ice-cream.I strongly recommend if you like deserts. PS: It is different from Turkey's Ekmek Kadayifi .

Walnut Preserve of Northern Cyprus

by Arkeolog

It's yummy :)Preserves in Northern Cyprus are made from almost every fruit. Before making them, the fruit to be used is washed, cleaned and soaked in lime. This is done to remove any undesirable bitterness in the fruit. After this comes the sweetening process. The fruit is cooked in sugar and syrup, sealed in glass jars and stored for a long period of time. This is done so that all of the fruit’s flavour and aroma is released into the syrup as it ages. Depending on preferences, some of these are served fresh and some are canned as preserves.Any visitor to Northern Cyprus samples a walnut preserve before they leave the island, for they are intrigued by its very distinctive taste. It may come as a surprise to those who think they would enjoy eating walnuts prepared in any fashion, but preserves are made from unripe, raw walnuts. Walnut preserves are made from walnuts that have a light...

I love Coral Bay

by rachel_sun

I went to Coral Bay this December ( 2007) and found it as nice as last time I saw it. The shops here are tasteful and the restuarants and bars are lively and trendy. I feel safe and relaxed here. Went for a meal at Coral King and it was fantastic. They done a set menu for £8 and it was amazing. Please see my tip on Coral King , updated tip for more info. Coral Bay beach is stunning. We parked up and walked down to it. It was Boxing Day and it was 23c and sunny. We went to a beach bar and sat in the sun and watched people on the beach and in the sea. Coral Bay has a beautiful long sandy beach. Very child friendly. I will be going back here in the summer for sure. Plenty of room to park etc.

Goto Tomb of the Kings on Sunday it's free

by rachel_sun

HelloIf you goto Tomb of the Kings on Sunday and other sim things they are free to get into. It can save you quite abit of cash. I went here 2008 and it was very quiet indeed. I find Tomb of the Kings fasinating and exciting. You could easy spend the entire day here. Take a picnic if you wish as there are plenty of places to relax with great views. Also loo's here at the exit and sometimes an icecream cart in the large carpark. The tombs are mostly down steep steps, so wear good footwear and not for people with bad backs etc. Most places close at dusk.

Kato Pyrgos Hotel

by LIMASSOL

I have just returned from my favourite country, Cyprus, but Oh so expensive now, so imagine my surprise when I visited Kato Pyrgos and stayed overnight at the Pyrgos Bay Hotel. It is only a 1Star hotel and a bit basic, but the room overlooked the bay and the scenery was super. The cost, Bed & breakfast and lunch the previous day £35C for two people, now that is a bargain. Not a lot to see there but well worth calling into Kanali fish restaurant just a few miles back towards Pomos.

Kalopanayiotis

by steventilly

Kalopanayiotis is a small Troodos mountain village with a monastery whose church is one of the 10 UNESCO painted churches. The village itself is small and very quiet, built partly on terraced hillsides on the edge of a valley. Through that valley flows a small river, passing the monastery on its way. The river runs through woodland and there's a picturesque old packhorse bridge over it, now superseded by a larger (and much uglier but more practical) modern road bridge. You can take a walk along the river and into the woods, and beside the river, close to the packhorse bridge and the monastery is an old sulphur spring. The water that flows out here, inside a small, open building, absolutely stinks. You get the wiff of rotten eggs as soon as you get close and it would be a brave man who would drink from the spring! The building looks like it was once intended as a place for "taking the...

Pedhoulas

by steventilly

Pedhoulas is a village in the Troodos mountains that has one of the 10 UNESCO painted churches - The Church Of Archangelos Michael (that church isn't the one shown here, by the way, you'll have to see the Things To Do tip for that). The village itself is pretty and quiet, at least it was in April. Judging by the hotels and facilities there it gets busier at other times, be that the height of summer or during the winter Ski season. Some of the most interesting-looking buildings here are in the process of being renovated.Steps lead up and down narrow alleys all over the village, taking you to higher (and lower) levels and creating a bit of a maze. I think you can get up to the cross (which is actually by a taverna) shown in the first picture via some of these steps, though we never made the trek. The village and its environs has a large number of churches other than the UNESCO one and they...

One/third of Cyprus is still...

by M.E.R.V

One/third of Cyprus is being occupied by the Turks and follows the government ruling of Turkey. The only way in the northern areas is to get to Nicosia(part of it belongs to Turks)and cross the border from there. Passport and a visa is necessary if u require one into Turkey. Security is tight. If you are entering from Turkey, the situation is much more different. There are no direct flights in from anywhere else apart from the mainland. The northern part of the island has many historical places to visit. You should check out www.northcyprus.net before making a trip there.

Fauna - snakes

by M.E.R.V

Animals and insects are all around the mountain regions. The most frequently seen animals are the fox, Cypriot hare and rabbit, long-earned hedgehod, Cypriot shrew and six species of bat. With no doubt, there are snakes too, which im only going to talk about. The snakes are only active in the summer and hibernate in the winter and are without exception, frightened of human beings. They only attack for self-defence. There are six species of which three are poisonous: blunt-nosed viper(which is extremely dangerous to man), cat snake and montpellier snake. The other three non-poisonous ones are the ravergier's whip snake, large whip-snake and cyprus whip-snake. Keep a look out for them!
