Skiing in Meditterenean

by M.E.R.V

Amazing but true - it does actually snow during the winter up in the mountains. The Troodos ski resort is the only ski location on the entire island. The highest point is Mount Olympus (1951m) which is also the highest point of the island and can be reached using the Zeus ski lift. On top of this, there are also 3 other ski lifts that takes you different areas of the ski resort where you may enjoy breathtaking sceneries while skiing down. In the winter, you can have a ski up in the mountains in the morning before heading to the beach for an afternoon swim. It usually starts snowing late December and ends mid April

Kato Pyrgos

by george5b

(Kato) Pyrgos is a seaside town on Morphou Bay. Due to it's location between the Turkish-occupied Morphou and the Kokkina enclave it is quite difficult to reach. Either take the long, winding raod from Polis or if you have a 4x4 take the mountain roads through the Troodos.Apart from August, when thousands of Cypriots visit, Pyrgos is pretty quite, but it does have some of the better beaches in the Republic as well as a nice town centre.

Walks from Baths of Aphrodite

by clairegeordio

The baths of Aphrodite located in the North-West of Cyprus were nothing special, but there are several nature trails that you can go on from this area. We only walked a short way but it was lovely to look down on the beautiful view of this part of Cyprus and if we had had more time, we would have explored further.

Monastery for "male pilgrims".

by Samsoncatdj

Stavrovouni monastery.Standing at the peak of a 668 metre mountain, is probably the most traditional and strictest monastery in Cyprus. Even today women are not permitted to enter. Legend has it, a piece of wood from the cross of Christ has been saved in the monastery and is held in a silver cross. This cross has been stolen many times in the past. For those who are not "male pilgrims", there is a cute little Greek Orthodox church outside and a couple of very friendly cats living in the carpark who would welcome your company. There is also a monastery bookshop women are permitted to browse in. And if this is not enough, you can always admire the view.If you are feeling energetic, there is a nice walking track up to the mountain and it is also popular for cyclists.

The Castle at the Top of the World.

by Samsoncatdj

Buffavento castle is a ruined castle seemingly on the top of the world. It sits 950 metres above sea level and the views from here go for miles. Buffavento castle was built as a defense from the Arab raids and guards one of the passes through the mountains. To get there, take the main road that leads from Kyrenia over the mountains via the Besparmak mountain pass. As the road reaches its highest point and before descending the southern slopes there is a turning to the right. The road is accessible by car but the first 730metres is rough. A 4-WD would be recommended but it is possible with a normal car if care is taken. You must drive for 7 kilometres along this rough road until you reach the carpark for the castle. Once you reach the carpark, there is a steep climb uphill for 1/2 hour. The track is now paved and is easy to walk on, but good shoes are recommended.

Take the Rough Road.

by Samsoncatdj

The road on the west coast of Cyprus from Pafos up the coast is a beautiful route to take if you are willing to brave it. After leaving Pafos and driving through Coral Bay area, head towards Agios Georgios. There is a nice little church there and some lovely outlooks over the ocean and peninsular. From here, keeping to the coast, the road becomes rougher. Passing a nice little cove with a view down the coast and goats grazing below, keep to the road as it winds around the cove and continues up the coast.About 8 kilometres further on, the road forks to the right and inland. This route will carry you up over the hills of the peninsular and towards Polis. Eventually, after crossing over the mountains, you will pass wheat fields and fields full of yellow wildflowers. You are now nearing the turnoff to the Bath of Aphrodite.

Visit the remote tip of Cyprus.

by Samsoncatdj

The Karpaz peninsular is about the remotest place on Cyprus and the monastery of St Andreas Apostolis at the very tip of the "pointy bit" is about the furtherest you can drive. It is well worth a visit to the monastery which lies within a nature reserve. Once again, this isolated monastery is plagued by cats. The Karpaz Peninsular has recently been declared a nature reserve and many different species of birds, wild flowers and wild donkeys thrive. In addition, there are plenty of sandy beaches on the peninsular which comprise the main nesting grounds for endangered sea turtles. It is possible to see the turtles come to lay their eggs and the babies making their dash for the sea when they hatch, depending upon the time of year you visit the Karpaz.
