See the 650 years old tree

by benazer

This tree is 650 years old,it was much bigger once but many braches broke or been cut down to save the tree to give it longer life.I have sat in the shade of this tree many times and thought about the nature and its mysterious ways.,once there was a cafee under it.Its friuts are very similar in taste to chesnuts.

Paralimni beaches

by C_L_T

The white sand beaches around Paralimni are lovely, great for swimming, snorkelling and scuba diving. There are operators who organise boat trips which are well worth the money and include cliff diving and watersports. Tony (the owner of Tony's Restaurant previously mentioned!) organised a trip for us to the UN border control in an ex-police boat! The border to Northern Cyprus is under armed guard so you aren't allowed to cross (unless you want to get shot!) but you can see the ghost town of Famagusta quite clearly.

local knowledge

by peeley

take a trip up to trodos mountains with a local guide. you will see much more than if you go on pre booked with a tour company.our guide ( can't remember his name ! ) took us well off the beaten track. we visited a small isolated village in the mountains to have a glass of wine at his sisters house !

Pitsylia and it's churches.

by rachel_sun

Panagia Tou Araka Church is one of many worth going to in the area.It does not look much from the outside. It has fantastic paintings inside and on the cielings etc.Very beautiful. The church's name came ftom a veggie that grows in the area.A pea I believe. It is open from 9am til 6pm and you get to enter free of charge. If you like a really long walk you can goto the Maheras Monastery. It is on the eastern side of Troodos Mountains. This place was rebuilt around 1900.It is said to be built around an icon which was found by a old man in a nearby cave.Cypriot people come here as it is cooler and they come for the peace and spiritual feeling of it.The only thing is you can only see it in a group.9am til 12 midday.Monday-Tuesday and Thursdays. You can go alone and try joining a group of people and you must be respectful and quiet and dress respectfully too.You can get a snack and drink in the...

Solea Valley

by rachel_sun

North of Troodos Massif is this valley. This area has pretty villages and a few nice churches worth visiting. The valley has a river running through it and many places to eat and drink and have a picnic.Kakopetria is the biggest town in this area. You can sleep and eat and bank etc here. You can also catch a bus here. This place is very laid back and the river and setting makes it ideal place to unwind after a long walk in the Troodos Mountains. This place is popular with people who have been hiking and come here for food and drink and to take a break. There are 2 churches here too that are worth checking out.A more off the beaten path area is Pitsylia. This part of The Troodos Mountains has many things worth seeing.Churches and monasterys and beautiful unspolit villages. This area has 8 hiking trails. Some are pretty tough ones too.You can again get a book that lists these trails from the...

Many wild flowers to be found

by rachel_sun

Cyprus is 2 hours ahead of GMT.Clocks go forward one hour on last weekend of March same as England and back again one hour last weekend of October.Electric current is 240v, 50hz.The plugs on electrical items have 3 prongs like the Uk.Loo's in Cyprus are normally clean and public loo's in tourist areas are normally kept clean. In Northern Cyprus you may get some of the squat loo's which can be abit smelly. If you are really bursting and want a loo fast just use a bar loo and then have a drink there.I done this a few times. My nanny found that lots of places had lots of steps. But this got her walking and climbing and I think it done her good.

Cost and Tipping

by rachel_sun

I found the costs in Cyprus not much cheaper than the Uk.North and South have similar costs.Eating out is cheaper on the North though.Supermarkets were slightly cheaper than England.Things like salad and chicken, meat and locally made wines and drinks were about 30% cheaper.Anything that has to be imported will be same as England or dearer. So go for local things.I drank locally made alcoholic liquors etc.£3 a bottle or less.A good way to eat cheap is to goto a local market.Things there will be around half price. You can also eat out at a good price by going to taverns off the beaten path.Yialos was such a place. It was on a beach all by itself and there was no menu. The owner just said what there was and we went from there. It is a very rustic taverna but the food was amazing and the service very friendly and spot on.Read more about Yialos in my Restaurant tips. This place is amazing. The cost...

Seacaves was really beautiful and peaceful.

A valid 10 year passport is needed to get into Cyprus.EU members can also use their identity card with a pic on it of themselves. If you wish to change money you also need to show your passport each time.I have made two or three copies of my passport incase I loose my passport.People from USA,Canada,EU Countries and Australia can visit Cyprus for upto 3 months.Driving in Cyprus is ok using your normal home licence for people in the EU.Other people are recomended to have an Intetnational Driving Licence. Do not take fruit and cut flowers and dried nuts and bulbs and veggies into or out of Cyprus.Money in Cyprus is the Cyprus Pound. There are 100 cents in a pound. On the Turkish side it is Turkish Lira.I just took all my spending money in Cyprus pounds as I knew the crime was low in Cyprus and just took what I needed out with me each day and hide the rest back at my villa.

Paradise Place

by anna-m

When you go from Paphos to Pollis, and past the small place called Pomos, just off the main road, you will find a small but very cosy and unconventional cafe, called "Paradise place".What makes it so special is a very relaxed atmosphere, far from the usual tourist husstle, great home-made food and drink and a spectacular view to the sea. It is also a host to the traditional jazz "festival" which takes place in early September, I believeAs a great friend of mine said: "Cyprus may not be paradise, but Paradise is in Cyprus!!"
