Rocky and rugged beaches-Dancing.

by rachel_sun

Cyprus has Greek and Turkish Cypriots living on it and the population is around 800,000.About 20% of the people are Turkish Cypriots. That's around 140,000 people.Lot's of Turkish people left Cyprus in 1974 but some went back to the South.Education is very good in Cyprus. But people who want to study after secondary school tend to goto England and Greece etc as there are not enough Universities in Cyprus. Dancing.Folk dancing today in Cyprus comes from ritual dancing that used to be performed in Greek temples many many years ago.The dance called "syrtos" has been put onto old Greek vases. Most of the Greek dances are done in a circle motion. This was done and still is done because people thought the circle stopped evil getting in.The popular dance called "kalamatianos" is the dance where people stand in a row and they put their hands on next persons shoulders each side of them. Greek music...

Mount Olympus

by freya_heaven

The height of Mount Olympus is 1952meters. On the top is a British controlled radar station (dome in the photo). One of our reasons for going so high in to the troodos mountains was to try & have a days skiing. We hardly found any snow, & certainly did not come across the ski resort. Its up there somewhere though! (~_~) On a clear day it is possibe to see Turkey from Mount Olympus

Solomans Catacombs

by freya_heaven

Solomans Catacombs consists of underground chambers. The catacomb is still used as a church. Sadly the area has been badly vandalised over the centurys.Outside of the Catacomb is a tree, covered with hankys and other material, left be people who believe in the miraculous powers of the catacomb. We tied on a hanky on the tree before we left.....................You never know! (~_~) Situated in north Paphos

Buyuk Haman

by freya_heaven

Buyuk Haman is a beautiful looking building, it was originally a church, St Georges of the Latins and the Turks made it in to a Haman (public baths). It is still used as a haman today. The surrounding area of this 14th century building has been raised so much that the ground floor is now below street level!Situated in Turkish Nicosia

Northern Cyprus

by freya_heaven

If you get chance go accross the border in to Turkish Cyprus in Nicosia. It can be Quite intimidating going through the UN no mans land & you have to be back in the Greek side by 5pm.Worth it though for the experience & you are made very welcome by the Turkish people. Quite strange walking from one culture to another within minutes.

Savvas Pottery

by american_tourister

I purchased a beautiful wine decanter and goblet set there that we still use for white wines in summertime. It keeps the wine very cool when you are outdoors. You can pick the size, style, and design of the clay pottery that you want to use and watch it being made. They even let you help on the wheel. It's not as romantic as the pottery scene in the movie "Ghost" but it is fun.

See 700-year-old religious icons at Kikkos

by GraceH

Take a 1-hour drive up a winding road around a montain to visit Kikkos Monastery and the museum that houses dozens of 700 and 800-year-old religious icons. The trip is long but well worth the effort if you are interested in art and/or religious art. The monastery is lovely and outside you can shop for local delicacies (candy, breads, confections).

Oymapinar Baraji(Dam)

by navaros

18 km from manavgat. Pass the village: Oymapinar Koyu, and shortly you will reach the enterance gate of the Oymapinar Baraji(Dam). 3 km inside this turn is the dam and reservoir lake of manavgat. This place is top guarded place, and you will need to entrust an identification card. You can not take any pictures. This one I copy from the internet :-)It is assumed that 180 million cubic meters of water will be transported yearly with the completion of the project, which will also constitute a source of water for the Middle Eastern and North African countries. Coming from a very dry country I esteem it a lot!
