Polis Things to Do

LATCHI WATERSPORTS CENTRE, located just down the road from polis and paphos is where we had the most fun on our holiday, we hired a 250hp speedboat for a day and it was amazing, we was given a map briefing of the amazing akamas coastline, then some instructions on how to drive the boat, throwing the anchor etc. Within an hour i felt very confident...

  • Boat Trip

The boat trips leaving from the nearby town Latchi are really enjoyable. The boat trips generally last a day travelling along the north coast of the Akamas Peninsula. At lunchtime the boat is moored in a turquoise cove where you are free to snorkel or relax on the boat and enjoy the excellent BBQ lunch cooked fresh. The scenery in this area is...

  • Wildlife around Polis

Keep an eye open for the a variety of wildlife you are likely to wander past - for example we bumped into the fella in the picture taking about five minutes to cross a quiet road. Around Polis we've also seen black python and grey hammer head vipers, large fruit bats (about fifty tend to eat off plants near the cafe as you leave polis towards the...

  • Chrysochou Bay - the beach at Latchi

A visit to the quiet beach at Latchi, west of the town of Polis. We were there in January - February 2004. The water was rather cold, but there was plenty of time to just sit on the beach and enjoy the view.

  • Kykkos Monastery

At the top of a mountain in the north west of Troodos mountains, stands the richest and most splendid monastery in Cyprus, Kykkos Monastery. Kykkos was founded in the 11th century.

  • Our Lady of the Golden Pomegranate

The sheer peacefulness and beauty walking around this lovely monastery with its laden fruit trees and heady aromas from the honeysuckles was indeed wonderful. I didn't want to leave it.

Polis Restaurants

  • Best eating experience in polis cyprus

If your like us and been coming to polis in cyprus for years then you get to know which eating place is best and we have to say that Karouzis Taverna which is just to one side of polis town on the road down towards the camp site has to be the best !Chriss and his family who run this little peacefull but spotless and very well decorated Taverna do a...

  • Good restaurants

We particularly like to seek out restaurants which offer local cooking- most places do world dishes so you can get non local food if you want it, but we always want to eat the authentic dishes. The best restaurants we found were Archontariki (see separate review), Finikas (the meze was great and the Afelia also very good), Moustakallis ( Amazing...

  • Best Restaurant Options-Polis

This was our favourite restaurant in the town of Polis- it was a 2 minute stroll from our apartment and a 3 minute walk from Polis square! All the food we ate here was excellent- we sample the garlic prawns, humous , olives and dolmades as starters, and the kleftiko, stuffed chicken and 'Holy Father's secret Plate' as mains. We were never...

  • Drink with a view

Never eaten the snacks but a great place to sit, have a cold beer (cheap) plus nibbles and enjoy the view. Friendly owner, very relaxed and cheap bar. Cold Lager!

  • Fish Restaurant

Great selection of fresh seafood plus good wines at reasonable prices.Better than any of the Latchi fish restaurants in my opinion. All good. Ask to see the fish before deciding what you want - they'll happily walk you through the fresh seafood they've got in that day.

  • Traditional

Restaurant has been here since the year dot. Local people running the restaurant.Traditional Greek Cypriot cooking. BBQ meat dishes and the Kleftiko. Great jacket potatoes.

Polis Transportation

  • Exploring Cyprus by hiring a car

If you plan driving to Akama/Aphrodite trail have in mind that you should hire a 4X4 jeep and not a saloon car because you cannot make it otherwise. There are plenty of companies to choose from and make sure that there is insurance within the quoted price. If you plan to explore the island the best way to do it is to hire a car. Travel independent...

  • Car Hire

If you want to get out of Polis and see the island- do book a car before you go. We tried to get one whilst there and could not. This meant it was really difficult to get around outside of Polis itself.

  • Possibly the friendliest garage in the...

The guys at EKO petrol station must be the happiest workers I've ever come across given that they are working in boiling hot weather surrounded by exhaust fumes. I always make a point of filling up there just in case they are having a bad day and I catch them being less jolly than usual!

Best supermarket in Polis (or Latchi) is the co-op as you exit Polis on the Latchi Road.
However you get better fruit and veg plus some UK foods you can't at the Co-Op from a small supermarket (one of many but this is the best) just off the main square opposite the barbers.
For a really decent supermarket you need to go to Pathos (one on RHS as you go into the town from the main Polis road).

Polis Warnings and Dangers

  • Marios Garden Cafe-avoid this place;

Let me explain. I do agree, even on this picture it looks quite uniqe, quite nice. That was the reason wy my fiancee wanted to take a few pictures of the place; but...because we were waiting for a bus on a bus stop nearby, we didn`t have a time to pop in an have a cup of tea or coffe there and then it happened; the owner jump out of the coffe and...

  • Big Spiders :) !!

For the aracnos out there ...They get some pretty meaty spiders around - harmless but they look like they've been working out.

When you get to Latchi and the harbor where the Seafood taverns are have in mind that seafood is quite expensive like everywhere else on the island but also in the world.

If you notice that you are asked to pay less you should be sure that what you get is frozen.
    Bottled wine is always expensive.

Cypriot wine is very popular and of fine quality so you better ask for a carafe instead. It should not exceed the €3 the glass. Carafe between €6-€10 the maximum for a kilo.

Ask for meze to have a variety of Cypriot dishes which come in small portions but exceed the 15 different dishes each time!

Be sure to get a receipt when you pay and check if what you paid is really for what you had.

Expect real fresh Seafood to be quite expensive! Meze in Cyprus

Polis Off The Beaten Path

  • Akamas Peninsular

This ex UK army firing range provides and area free of the building they seem to be chucking up all over the islands at a rapid rate.About a mile past Laatchi from Polis turn off to follow the coast to the car park at Aphrodite. The Aphrodite cave is worth a quick look (its free), swimming around Aphrodite rock is quite pleasant and there's a decent...

  • Go camping

There is a campsite by the beach at Polis (just follow signs for the beach) which makes a nice getaway from the ultra-touristy areas of Cyprus. There isn't much to do and it gets crowded at the weekend with holidaying locals but the beach is pleasant and it's a good base to go walking in the Akamas Peninsula. I didn't actually stay here but I would...

On the outskirts of Polis is a carting track. Carts ok and not a bad course. Seem pretty generous about the time you get for you money once you've had a couple of goes.
Put on race nights regularly for those who fancy a bit of competition but is quiet a lot of the day for those who just want a quiet go with no one about.

Equipment: The usual variation in the Carts - still gives you something to blame if you get beat!

2005 The cafe I reported on last year has moved to just off the main square (see picture). Friendly helpful owners. Good selection of drinks and the home made cakes seem very popular. At the current time (2004) there is only one location to get on-line in Polis. A local computer shop which was just setting up in August. Very friendly. Easy to find...

  • Hazy Lazy Days

Polis is a fishing village and the coast which extends up the Akamas is so inviting. We took a speedboat every day to snorkle the bays and points. Exhilarating!
