Fanous: Lebanese At Its Best

by steventilly

Fanous is a Lebanese restaurant set in the heart of Nicosia's restored old town quarter "Laiki Yitonia". This whole area, whilst quite picuresque, is a bit of a tourist trap and The Rough Guide finds little to recommend in it, and especially not restaurants. I can only imagine that this place didn't exist when The Rough Guide's compiler visited or else he doesn't know good food when he tastes it. Put simply, this was close to being the best meal we'd ever had.We went for a mezze-style approach and selected about 8 dishes from the extensive menu. None of the dishes was small enough to be truly a mezze dish, but there was so much on that menu that we wanted to taste that we just couldn't help ourselves. The dishes were similar to some that we'd had before in Greek & Armenian restaurants but every one of them had a style and flavour that was different to the way that we'd had them...

Stretto: Beneath The Castle Walls

by steventilly

So good we went back - even though it was almost an hour away down the motorway. A fine, relaxed outdoor setting beneath the walls of Limassol castle and with plenty more seating inside. The food is Italian themed with a bit of local flavour and is absolutely superb. No surprise that it was the only one of the Carob Warehouse's several cafes that seemed to be full (that's what drew us to it, it's usually a good sign). No surprise too that we saw some dignatory leaving there in his armoured limo, the Italian flag flying from the bonnet. On our first visit we had beetroot stuffed ravioli in a gorgonzola and rocket sauce and pear, blue cheese & rocket salad. On our second visit we plumped for a salad of roasted vegetables topped with deep-fried brie, penne with 5 kinds of mushrooms and shared a crepe topped with carob syrup and "village sweets" (see the Local Customs section). On both...

The Seven Saint Georges: Food Until You Say Stop

by steventilly

This place is legendary and mentioned in most guide books. The fact that it is in most guide books would suggest that it is deserving of such mention, and so it is. The place does only one dish and therefore has no menu. The dish in question is mezze. Mezze is a typical dish of Greek influenced cultures and consists of a variety of small portions of different foods served all together or coming along at intervals. The Cypriot mezze is regarded as something quite special and consists of more dishes than you usually get in Greece. At Seven Saint Georges this is taken to the extreme and the dishes keep on coming until you say "no more". All that George (yes, of course the owner's called George) asks is that you do not waste food.We ate there twice and on our first visit managed 26 dishes, on the second only 24. Each dish was delicious, we wasted not one crumb of food, the service was brisk...

Living: Dover Sol

by Andreas01

There are lots of fish taverns in Cyprus but for a speciality and a favourite of mine, i reccomend you try the Dover Sol at Living in Nicosia. As far as i know it is the only restaurant that does it and it was perfect! Dover Sol, but the steaks are great - only the best meat at this place!

Such a choice in Paphos

by pompeyalbie

Just back from a week in Paphos, we initially decided to try somewhere different to eat each night but that went out the window when we found places we liked. Difficult to choose the best place but the Mousakka at Argo was superb, the service was fast and friendly and the price was unbelievably cheap. We both had 3 courses plus beer and wine and it came to 17.50CP. Mothers tucked away in the Basillica Centre was another really friendly place where the food was very good, the Kleftiko was excellent and generous.Hondoros, Mantara were also places we tried along with a place up in the Ktima paphos area by the civic offices which was surrounded by cats. all gave good services and excellent value for money meals. My wife loved the moussaka at Argo, I enjoyed the Kleftiko at Mothers.

'Paragati' for fish, 'Living' for steak and ribs: Steak or fish?

by SharonTate

While in Cyprus on business some friends tooks me out to dinner on two occassions and I must say I was very impressed on both accounts. On the first night we went to Paragati Fish Resataurant in Nicosia. The service was superb and the food just kept on coming! I recommend the grilled octopus! ON the second occation we went to Living (also in Nicosia) a restaurant im told has a reputation for their steaks. I, not being a big red meat eater, had the salmon steak which was delicious and my friends had steak and spare ribs. We enjoyed it so much we went there for lunch the following day. Very nice indeed! In Paragati there was so much choice as its a type of fish meze but my favourite was the grilled octopus. At Living it was the salmon and the salads are definitely worth trying. But I'd definitely try the steaks if you're a meat eater!

Rocket Diner: Nostalgic 50s style American diner

by jungles

If you've ever been to a Steak 'n Shake in the US, then you'll know what to expect from this place. If you haven't, it's a place with big cushy booths where you can sit and eat hamburgers and think about the good 'ol days. It's supposed to look like the old diners that were actually made out of railroad dining cars in the US in the 1950s, and they even have a history of diners on the menu for those who are interested. Their slogan is "Come Hungry," which indeed is good advice. The burgers are huge and come with thick steak fries. Both the burger and salad options cost under 5 Cypriot pounds. Breakfast is also served all day. My one complaint is that the so-called Chicken Fillet Burger is not a fillet at all; it's ground chicken meat molded into a patty, just like a hamburger but with chicken.

Daniel Taverna: Excellent food and atmosphere

by AB15

If you are staying at the Lordos Beach, Sandy Beach or Golden Bay hotels just outside Larnaca on the Dekeleia Road, don't miss eating at this Taverna. The menu is very varied with both Cypriot and International dishes and whatever you choose the food is excellent. The staff are great - very helpful and friendly and as soon as you arrive bring a plate of delicious hot pitta bread and garlic butter It's difficult to choose a favourite dish but the fillet steak melts in your mouth and the lamb kleftika is wonderful - it just falls off the bone
