  • Famagusta Gate - Cyprus
    Famagusta Gate
    by hopang
Famagusta Gate (Pyli Ammochostou) is located at Caraffa Bastion, Off Leoforos Athinas in the Old Town of Nicosia. It is one of the three old gates that formed the fortification wall in the Old Town of Nicosia. The gate is formerly known as Porta Guiliana and it is the best preserved of the three gates along the fortification wall which was constructed by the Venetians to protect the city against invasions by Ottoman Turks in the 16th century. It is also the lowest of the three gates and it is sometimes known as Porta di Sotto meaning the lower gate. The fortification wall had a diameter of approximately one and half kilometers.

The Famagusta Gate is a well-known tourist attraction in the city of Nicosia. The gate which was designed by Count Savorgnano was in fact one of the entrances to the old town of Nicosia. It was neglected for almost a century. The Gate was renovated in 1980 to make way for Lefkosia Municipal Cultural Centre with two halls used for conferences, exhibitions and concerts especially during the summer months. Don't miss the Famagusta Gate when you are in Nicosia for your vacation!

    Ghost City of Famagusta at
    Varosha suburb
    by hopang
Famagusta is a beach front city located at Famagusta Bay between Cape Greco and Cape Eloea in eastern coast of the island of Cyprus. It has the deepest port of the entire island. Famagusta was the top tourist destination in Cyprus before Turkish invasion in 1974 with many high rise hotels and apartments. It was also one of the top tourist destinations in the world! The history of Famagusta dates back to 300 BC. Today section of Varosha suburb of Famagusta is a ghost city which has been fenced off by barbed wires and guarded by Turkish military.

The entire city of Famagusta was evacuated days before the Turkish invasion. Majority of the population were Greek Cypriots who fled to the nearby city of Paralimni. They were not allowed to return until today. The Turkish army advanced as far as Atilla Line which forms the border between north and south. You can view the ghost city of Famagusta from the observation post just inside the Green Line near the town of Paralimni.

  • An orthodox church at Paralimni - Cyprus
    An orthodox church at
    Paralimni
    by hopang
Paralimni is located at southeastern coast of the island, approximately 15 kilometers from Protaras and Ayia Napa. It is actually inland to Protaras. Paralimni is the largest town in Famagusta District with a population of approximately 12,000 inhabitants. Many of the workers who work in the tourist industry at Protaras and Ayia Napa live in Paralimni. Paralimni literally means "beside the lake" as the town was built on the banks of the shallow lake. The entire lake had been reclaimed for agricultural purposes by the government.

The town of Paralimni has grown rapidly since the Turkish military occupation of nearby Famagusta in 1974. Famagusta has since been a ghost city. Paralimni has become the new administrative centre of Famagusta District.

Among the popular tourist attractions at Paralimni are old Venetian style buildings in the old town with narrow walkways, the Church of Virgin Mary, Famagusta Shooting Club, Athletic Centre and the orthodox church as depicted on our photo above. You may take a local bus from Protaras or Ayia Napa to Paralimni at a cost of less than one euro per adult per way.

  • Old Limassol Castle - Cyprus
    Old Limassol Castle
    by hopang
Limassol is located at Akrotiri Bay approximately 80 kilometers southwest of Nicosia. Limassol which is the second largest city in Cyprus, is situated on the southern coast of the island. It is also the largest port in Cyprus.

You may take a one day bus trip to the city of Limassol like we did if you are having a vacation at Ayia Napa which is located on southwestern coast of Cyprus. The distance between Ayia Napa and Limassol is almost two hundred kilometers.

Among the popular tourist attractions in Limassol are Limassol Promenade, the Old Town, Limassol Castle, Limassol Municipal Gardens, Limassol District Archeological Museum, Dhassoudi Beach, Limassol Folk Art Museum, Cyprus Wine Museum, Limassol Municipal Art Gallery, Kolossi Medieval Castle and Medieval Museum. The city centre and the harbour are also lovely to explore as well as the shopping district!

Ayia Napa (also known as Agia Napa) is located at southeastern coast of the island of Cyprus at Famagusta District not far from Protaras and Paralimni. Ayia means "holy" and nape is derived from a Greek word which means "wooded valley" as the town was once surrounded with thick green vegetation.

Ayia Napa was derived from the name of a Venetian monastery located in the town center. The history of Ayia Napa dates back to the 14th century during the Venetian era. Today it has a population of approximately 3,000 inhabitants, many of them involved in tourist industry.

As it is a popular tourist resort, sun-bathing is commmon activity during the hot summer months. Temperatures along the southern coast can reach as high as 35 degrees Celcius in summer. Swimming at the crystal clear waters of Mediterranean Sea at the bay was one of our fondest memories of our vacation in Cyprus!

  • Cyprus Boat Tour - Cyprus
    Cyprus Boat Tour
    by hopang, 4 more photos
Cyprus Boat Tour with one hour stop for swimming at crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea, is certainly one of the most popular tourist attractions in Cyprus. You may begin your boat tour from many jetties around the island, the more popular one is from the harbour of Ayia Napa. At Ayia Napa there are several boat tour operators to choose from.

The tour boat will take visitors and passengers along the coastline of Southern Cyprus right up to the ghost city of Famagusta and return, thereby passing Cape Greco at the Southeast tip of Republic of Cyprus. Visitors are able to view the lovely bays, the cliffs, secluded coves, beautiful beaches and beautiful rock formations along the coastline.

For those who are hungry and thirsty, light meals such as snacks and cold drinks can be purchased at a reasonable price. We have certainly enjoyed this exciting boat tour! Please visit our Cyprus travelogues for more pictures of boat cruise in Cyprus. You may contact the below telephone numbers for more information about Cyprus Boat Tour from Ayia Napa!

  • Liberty Monument - Cyprus
    Liberty Monument
    by hopang
The Liberty Monument is located at Eleftheria Square at the junctions of Nikoforos Phokas and Koraes Streets in the Old Town of Nicosia. It is the most photographed monument and one of the most popular tourist attractions in Nicosia. It is also a favourite meeting place for the locals.

The Liberty Monument comprises 14 bronze statues of prisoners, both men and women released from prison topped by the Statue of Liberty. It was erected in 1973 to commemorate the release of EOKA (Ethniki Organosis Kyprion Agoniston) fighters in 1959. EOKA was a right wing National Organisation of Cypriot Fighters with approximately 1,200 fighters who fought for the liberation of Cyprus from British colonial rule between 1955 and 1959 and for union with Greece. The bronze statues did not include Turkish Cypriots!

  • St. Nicholas Church, Troodos Mountain - Cyprus
    St. Nicholas Church, Troodos
    Mountain
    by hopang
Troodos Mountain is located in the center of the island of Cyprus between Nicosia and Limassol, approximately 60 kilometers from the capital. You may take a one day bus trip to Troodos Mountain from Ayia Napa like we did in 2002. You may purchase tour package to Troodos Mountain from the local tour agents at Protaras or Ayia Napa. The highest peak at Troodos Mountain is Mt. Olympus which is 1,952 meters above sea level.

The summer is cool, an excellent mountain resort and retreat to escape the heat of the coastal cities. However winter is cold, often with snow suitable for skiing and other winter sports. Many Byzantine churches and monasteries at Troodos Mountain are listed as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. One of them is St. Nicholas Church as depicted on our photo above. Don't miss Troodos Mountain when you visit Cyprus on your vacation!

  • Divided city - Cyprus
    Divided city
    by hopang, 1 more photos
Nicosia is the last divided capital of Europe! The Green Line cuts the city into Northern Nicosia and Southern Nicosia. Northern Nicosia is occupied by Turkish Cypriot and is the capital of Northern Cyprus. Southern Nicosia has a majority of population consisting of Greek Cypriot and is the capital of Republic of Cyprus. Southern Nicosia has a total population of approximately 300,000 inhabitants and Northern Nicosia slightly less than 90,000 inhabitants.

When we were in Cyprus in 2002, the Green Line was not opened to visitors from either side of the border. We understand that a section of the Green Line at the divided city has been opened to visitors willing to cross the border. Nevertheless the Green Line with its wall can be regarded as some sort of a tourist attraction in the city of Nicosia!

  • Stunning coastline - Cyprus
    Stunning coastline
    by rachel_sun
Cyprus has stunning beaches. As we hired a car we explored the coastline abit.We hired a car but a off road vehicle would of been better as some places are up gravel roads etc.One day we drove to Polis.Polis is unspoilt and has a huge bay.Hrysohou Bay.This bay runs along north- west sweep of Cyprus from the Akamas Peninsula to Pomos Point.I found Polis very laid back and relaxing. It was not touristy and very peaceful. It is in a good area too as there are great beaches nearby and walking at The Arkamas is a must do.Going to the small villages of the Arkamas heights and checking out the quiet and not very visited north-west Cyprus is well worth doing.Because Polis is unspoilt, eating here is great value. In recent years the standards have improved and accomadation is low key and relaxing. We had a good meal here. The town is about 2km from the beach. It is pretty compact. The centre does not allow traffic.
Take a look at the old olive tree while visiting Polis. It is near the Archaelogical Museum( open from 8am til 2pm Monday-Tuesaday-Wednesday-Friday and 8am til 6pm Thursday and 9am til 5pm on Saturday). The tree is near the museum outside and is over 600 years old and olives still amazingly grow on it.
The best beaches in the area at the campsite. Then to the east of Latsi.Latsi is a small fishing village.About 5km west of Polis. These beaches are nice and have restaurants etc there too.Hrysohou Bay does not have very good beaches.Abit dirty and quiet.West side of Arkamas has good beaches.Lara Beach can only be got to by 4 wheel drive. It is very rugged and has a small taverna.
