by navaros Climb up to the hill, outside the amphitheater, and you will find the reminders of the city, and the place where the actors, and workers lived. The landscape is awesome, and the view from up there, into the amphitheater, gives a full understanding . Leave a Comment Address: Up the hill in the right side of the amphitheater.

Ktima Paphos is a great place for eating and shopping, two of our favourite pastimes. UK favourites such as Marks & Spencer’s and Next are here as well as more specialist shops. There’s a shop specialising in the fine food products of Greece - olive oils from Crete, wine from Samos, ouzo from Lesvos, mastic products from Chios as well as traditional Cypriot products. Another shop (La Casa Del Habano) offers not just the chance to buy fine cigars, but also the opportunity to smoke them in peace, over a drink if you like. In the streets near the markets there are traditional handicraft shops. As for eating places, the “cliff” (close to the markets) overlooking Kato Paphos on the coast down below is packed with places. Some look more appealing than others, especially when you’re looking for veggie fare. Most offer great views and the chance to linger a while, perhaps with a book, while you enjoy a drink or meal. Further up the scale there’s Kiniras, Paphos’ best restored inn with a courtyard restauant, or down the scale there’s umpteen kafenions, kebab joints and tavernas. We plumped for Titiana on a square by a busy road junction and we weren’t disappointed. Great for people watching too.

A windmill in Cyprus by hopang The windmill in the Republic of Cyprus is quite unique in appearance and is a sort of a tourist attraction. It certainly attracts us to take some pictures of it for remembrance! Many of these windmills can be found along the coast due to the availablility of strong winds throughout the year especially at Famagusta District between Ayia Napa and Paralimni. Most of these windmills are still pretty much operating and are in fairly good condition. The windmill as depicted in our photograph on the right was taken just opposite Orestis Aparthotel at Protaras where we were staying. Please note the picture of the Orestis Aparthotel behind the windmill Leave a Comment

Kato Lefkara by cheekymarieh Lefkara is actually two small villages - Kato is the lower one. Here the streets are much narrower and it is a much more traditional village. I personally prefer this one to the Pano, the upper and more tourist orientated village. For anybody familiar with the British comedy show Last Of The Summer Wine, the shopkeepers in Pano Lefkara remind me of Aunty Wainwright. They hassle you to go into their shops. Kato Lefkara on the other hand has shopkeepers who welcome you inside and tell you the hiostory of lacemaking within the village. On several of my visits to the village I have been offered a drink within a shop. You are under no obligation to buy anything even though you have been given a free drink. The art of lacemaking in the villages date back to the 15th century when the Venetians were an occupying force. It is said that Leonardo Da Vinci took some lace back to Italy. There is a traditional design that has been named after him. Every August their is a festival with folklore dancing and local food. Leave a Comment Address: Kato Lefkara, Pano LefkaraDirections: The villages are signposted off the A1 motorway just after the the Nicosia / Larnaca motorways join to head towards Limassol. It is about 12km up into the mountains. The villages are well signposted with Kato being the first that you come to on the right.Website: www.cyculture.net/lefkara/

Kykkos Monastery is the largest and most famous monastery in Cyprus. It was founded in AD 1100, is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and is home to one of the three surviving icons painted by the Apostle Luke. Kykkos Monastery is ornately decorated and almost every wall and roof of the buildings are covered in beautiful mosaics and frescos of all colours. It is also famous for its museum, located within the monastery grounds. The atmosphere here is peaceful and the monks go about their daily business while the local monastery cat goes about the business of sleeping by the well. There is a little shop that sells wine, liquor and icons. The nearby Troodos Mountains, with magnificent hills and valleys (including Cedar valley), are also worth exploring as they are home to nine Byzantine churches and are included on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Phone: +357 22-942 736Directions: From Troodos, take the road to Pedoulas which leads to Kykkos; from Limassol, take the road north towards Platres, past Pedoulas to Kykkos; from Pafos, towards Limassol, then northeast past Kedares to Platres. The monastery is well-signposted.Website: http://www.kykkos-museum.cy.net/index2.html

The town of Ayia Napa is located at the far eastern end of the south coast of the island of Cyprus. It is famous for its sandy beaches and the numerous cruises at Mediterranean Sea. Among the famous beaches at Ayia Napa are the Nissi Beach and the Harbour Beach. Beside the popular beaches and numerous cruises, other popular tourist attractions at and around Ayia Napa are several museums such as the Pierides Museum and the Municipal Museum, the Town Hall, the Waterworld Waterpark, Sea Caves, Ayia Napa Monastery, Ayia Napa Harbour and the famous Cape Greco which is approximately 10 minute drive from the town center. Not only are the ruins and mosaics in the archaeological park a sight to behold, the natural scenery here is lovely too. We were probably lucky that we were there in spring as the landscape was still lush and not scorched. The wild flowers were amazing, I’ve never seen so many convolvulus growing so rampantly in one place. The lighthouse shown in some of these photos has no archaeological or historical interest put it adds to the already picturesque landscape and provides a landmark when trying to navigate your way around the park - the odeion stands just below it.

Votive rags in a tree at Ayia Solomoni by steventilly, 4 more photos Ayia Solomoni (Saint Solomoni) was a jewess who apparently had to endure the torture of seeing her own seven children tortured and murdered one by one by some particularly nasty king. The thing that draws your attention to this site at street level is a tree overhanging the pavement that is covered in votive rags, requests for wishes or prayers from those who feel in need. Beside this tree steps lead down to a small courtyard and from there cut stone steps lead further down into catacombs below. It’s a dank place, but worth taking a look. Several chapels are hewn into the rock, some in better condition than others and those that are particularly poor are blocked off by iron grills. One of those blocked off chapels contains the poorly preserved remnants of some ancient frescoes (shown in final picture). Other, open, chapels still appear to be in sporadic use and you’ll likely find votive candles burning, leaving their sooty deposits on the rocky walls. The lowest level of the catacombs leads to a small pool of “miraculous water”.
