Our experiences in Northern Cyprus

by brf2424

Cyprus may not be the first place you think of for an idyllic holiday destination. In fact mention Cyprus to most Australians, including myself and the first thing you think of is all the trouble they have had.But my wife was invited to speak at a conference in Northern Cyprus so I looked up the travel advisory and it said to be cautious travelling, especially in Northern Cyprus, the roads are poor and the hotels are not up to standard.Nonetheless, it was a good opportunity for her so we decided to go.What we found could not have been any more different from our expectations. We flew into Larnaca, in the South which is predominantly Greek Cypriot and were taken to Girne (Kyrenia) in the North or Turkish Cypriot area. We drove into Lefkosa or Nicosia as the west still refers to it, on a 4 lane highway. I thought at the time that it was the major road to their largest city hence the 4 lane...

Village Tour

by livfaith

The Red Bus (looks like a red double decker without roof on top) leaves from Agia (Ayia) Napa, Protaras and Pernera every afternoon and takes people on a tour of the local area. My friend and I weren't too keen at first as we generally avoid guided tours but gave it a try anyway and it was exellent - it gave us lots of ideas about things to do that we hadn't heard about anywhere else. It costs 15 Euros per person and can be booked at any travel angeny in Agia Napa or tickets bought on the bus. Goes first to Potomos a small fishing village on an estury with some great fish restaurants and an almost deserted beach; then through several other villages (Liopetri, Avgorou) and past a memorial for independence fighters and a reservoir; then to the border with the Turkish part, you can see Turkish, Cypriot and UN border guards and the home of one of the British garrisons, plus a deserted...

paphos

by hanspeter_W.

Home to the second international airport in Cyprus and deemed to be the capital of the west, Paphos Cyprus is an excellent holiday destination, and a city steeped in history. Holidays to Paphos are indeed something you will remember forever and whether you stay in a Paphos villa or a hotel in Paphos we guarantee you will not be disappointed. The town of Paphos is located just 10km from Paphos Airport just a short taxi ride away. Car hiring in Paphos is also very popular and you can arrange to pick up your hire car at the airport.Paphos Cyprus consists of two separate areas, the coastal region known as Kato Paphos and the actual town itself known locally as Pano Paphos. Paphos is extremely popular with a wide range of tourists including English, German, and other European nationalities. Some of the main reasons for this include cheap flights to Paphos and the amazing Paphos weather.The...

protaras

by hanspeter_W.

This is a more calm resort compared to Ayia Napa even though it is only 10 minutes away by car. Protaras is situated between Cape Greco and the village of Paralimni and boasts the fabulous Fig Tree Bay, which stretches over 10 miles of Sandy Beach. While lying on the beach you will have the opportunity to decide which of Protaras many restaurants you will try that evening. Protaras is the place to try freshly grilled fish in one of the open-air seafood restaurants or take a pick from the several types including Thai, Italian, Indian and many others. Protaras also offers a good choice of shops, taverns, nightclubs and bars. The many protaras villas for rent, offer privacy in your own villa, often with private swimming pools.protaras hotels are also excellent in this area.

make a bike tour from hill to beach

by hanspeter_W.

The bike tours are available at various levels to suit experience. The guide will choose the start and finish points of the tour and also make decisions on the weather situation. We describe these as “easy mountain bike” excursions, because they are suitable for almost everyone aged 10 to 70, so long as you are relatively fit and healthy. You are riding on an easy-rolling top quality rental bike, which is adjusted by our guides to match your size. Depending on the season the tours will start at the ideal time. For example during June, July, August and September there will be sunrise or sunset-tours. Cyprus is an island perfect for the biking enthusiast. Witness a variety of stunning scenery as you bike through dramatic coastlines, mountains, forests, valleys, gorges and many untouched traditional villages. An experienced guide team headed by Thomas Wegmueller, the former Swiss cycling...

3 in 1 - Cave Greko the View Point and the Chapel

by Helga.cy

Cape Greko (or Cavo greko) is a MUST-SEE and it means 3 places to visit. The Caves, the View point and the Chapel. The Chapel and the Caves are also both popular dive sites.Sea CavesVisit the caves if you want to see divers risking their lives or perhaps try a jump yourself :-) If you are a diver, this area also has beautiful underwater creatures. If you are patient you can spot a variety of aquatic life such as stingrays, lobsters and the most popular, but menacing looking, fish the grouper. There are some dive sites around the caves that are a bit difficult to reach. Be careful though, there are some dangerous currents around this area. Even if you dont dive its worth visiting the caves just to look around. The sea caves lie off the Ayia Napa - Protaras coast road. Follow the road to Protaras and take the first road to Cavo Grecko. About 150m along the road there is a small dirt road...

by hopang

The town of Ayia Napa is located at the far eastern end of the south coast of the island of Cyprus. It is famous for its sandy beaches and the numerous cruises at Mediterranean Sea. Among the famous beaches at Ayia Napa are the Nissi Beach and the Harbour Beach. Beside the popular beaches and numerous cruises, other popular tourist attractions at and around Ayia Napa are several museums such as the Pierides Museum and the Municipal Museum, the Town Hall, the Waterworld Waterpark, Sea Caves, Ayia Napa Monastery, Ayia Napa Harbour and the famous Cape Greco which is approximately 10 minute drive from the town center.

Villages and old buildings at Troodos Mountains

by hopang

Troodos Mountains are located in the middle of the island of Cyprus between Nicosia, the capital and the coastal city of Limassol, approximately 60 kilometers from the capital. You may take a one day bus trip to Troodos Mountain from Ayia Napa. You may purchase tour package to Troodos Mountains from the local tour agents at Protaras or Ayia Napa. The highest peak at Troodos Mountains is Mt. Olympus which is approximately 1,950 meters above the sea level. The summer is cool, an excellent mountain resort and retreat to escape the heat and the chaos of the coastal cities. However winter is rather cold, often with snow suitable for skiing and other winter sports. Many churches and monasteries at Troodos Mountains are listed as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. The old villages and the old buildings at Troodos Mountains may be attractive to local and foreign tourists.

Rose Wine making demonstration, Troodos Mountains

by hopang

Rose wine is quite popular in Cyprus. Many of the rose wines are bottled at Troodos Mountains. We had the opportunity to watch demonstration of rose wine making at Troodos Mountains. It was quite interesting to watch how the rose wine is being produced. After the demonstartion, you have the opportunity to purchase some rose wine from the show room. We decided to purchase instead some rose scented candles from the showroom. We were quite happy with the purchase which lasted us for several years!

The windmill

by hopang

The windmill in the Republic of Cyprus is quite unique in appearance and is a sort of a tourist attraction. It certainly attracts us to take some pictures of it for remembrance! Many of these windmills can be found along the coast due to the availablility of strong winds throughout the year especially at Famagusta District between Ayia Napa and Paralimni. Most of these windmills are still pretty much operating and are in fairly good condition. The windmill as depicted in our photograph on the right was taken just opposite Orestis Aparthotel at Protaras where we were staying. Please note the picture of the Orestis Aparthotel behind the windmill
