Kato Paphos: 7 columns & more mosaiques

by globetrott

In Kato Paphos you will need at least 2-3 hours in order to see all of these excarvations and the best mosaiques, that are spread all over a wide area and all that you mostly will see are the basements of the former buildings and a lot of interesting mosaiques on the floor. In my main photo: At these 7 columns is the only place that I remember where you get a feeling what the houses or temples might have looked like, all the rest of the area you will just see basements of the buildings, like in my last photo. My 2nd picture: I have never seen so many mosaiques of excellent quality in any excarvation-area so far. In most cases there is a wooden path in a distance of about half a meter above the mosaiques, so nobody will be able to step on them and you can also make perfect photos from up there. Unfortunately I also had the shadows of the afternoon-sun on my pics !

Kato Paphos: great mosaiques & more

by globetrott

Kato Paphos is the old part of Paphos and in a wide area next to the port you will find great excarvations. The house of Dionysos is the first building that you will get to, when entering the excarvation-area next to the port of Kato Paphos. Take a look at these wonderful mosaiques, they almost look like paintings and it is a pity that the colors are a bit faded. All of these excarvations in Kato Papfos are included in the UNESCO-Worldheritage-list.The house of Theseus has one of the most beautiful mosaiques in Kato Paphos with a diameter of 12 meters. Kato Paphos of nowadays was called Nea Pafos when the Romans built this town around 58BC. Nea Pafos was an important port and a weathly town, you can still see that by the outstanding quality of the mosaiques in this excarvation-area. A lot of houses are still under the ground.

Nicosia : The Green Line

by globetrott

The Green Line is the line that divides Nicosia into 2 parts and this line is a road through several rows of houses, that have been abandoned by its inhabitants. All of that line looks quite spooky from the few places, where you are able to see it at all. This is a sensitive area that is guarded by UN-troops, who make patrols on a regular basis each day.Taking photos there is really dangerous and you never know who is watching you...

Nikosia: The Buyuk Han

by globetrott

The Buyuk Han in Nicosia is dating back to the year 1572 and it has 68 rooms, that were ment in order to accomodate travellers and merchants at a place close to the large markethalls and bazars of that time. This building is used for various shops, cafes and restaurants nowadays and the building in the middle is a mosque.

Larnaca :St. Lazarus Church

by globetrott

St. Lazarus Church in Larnaca is the most important christian church of Cyprus and you will find it in the very centre of town. Lazarus was the first bishop of Larnaca and under the church you will also see a grotto with a sarcophag that once had the bones of Lazarus inside, but during the crusades they had been taken first to Konstantinopel and finally to Marseille. The Lazarus-church looks great from outside and will also be lighted at night, but it really makes sense to take also a look inside! This church is mostly open all day long untill 06.00pm and nobody cares, even when you are taking photos with a flash. In Greek-orthodox churches it is also usual to approach the iconostase, some believers even kiss and toucht it, when praying, so it is also no problem to go there close to the icons and make photos from a short distance.

Larnaca: Hala Sultan Tekke / Hala Sultan Mosque

by globetrott

A few hundered meters out of the citylimits of Larnaca and on the shore of the big saltlake you will find this interesting mosque: Hala Sultan Tekke / the Hala Sultan Mosque is the 4th important mosque of the Muslims and the reason for this is the fact that Hala Sultan, the aunt of Prophet Mohammed, died there, when the Arabs conquered Cyprus in the year 647. She fell from her mule and was burried at this very spot and the mosque was built around the tomb.Hala Tekke Mosque is open for visitors and its interior is worth seeing as well. Of course I took off my shoes in front of the mosque. There is no entrancefee, but a lady was sitting there when I came and she entered the mosque togeather with me, gave some explanations and at the end she asked me for a donation to be put into the donation-box of the mosque. There are several interesting tombs inside the Hala Tekke Mosque, but the most...

Nicosia - the divided capital of Cyprus

by globetrott

What a tragedy to see a divided city still in Europe with a greek part in the south and the northern part that was occupied by turkish troops some decades ago.For the tourists this only means that they have a border to cross - in fact that is quite easy and involves only a tiny bit of paperwork that is all done by the turkish authorities as soon as you hand over your passport.I made a short visit of 3 hours only to the northern part, unfortunately photography is strictely forbidden next to the borderline (and might also be extremely dangerous if they catch you)and this is why I will show here only photos of the area closer to the border, houses where the inhabitants had to flee.

Paphos: The tombs of the Kings

by globetrott

"The Tombs of the Kings" is one of the major attractions of Paphos in the south-west of Cyprus. That is a totally misleading name for this wide area of tombs, because not a single king was buried there. They might have been rich people but certainly no kings and their tombs were in many cases built like their former houses with an atrium in the middle. You can park there on a large parking-lot in the westend of Paphos, pay a small entrancefee of 1,70 euros and walk 2-3 hours through this wide area of tombs, that were built into the soft rocks.

The interior of "Panagía Forvotissa" in Asinou

by globetrott

This is the great interior of "Panagía Forvotissa" or "archangel Michael church of Asinou" , both of these names are the official name of this church and the church dates back to the 17th century. All of the walls of the tiny church of Asinou are loaded with heavenly frescoes, you might stay there for hours just watching these special colors and great details. There are no regular opening-times, so hopefully you will be there, while some bus-companies have organized someone to open the doors of the church !Otherwise you might need to ask for the key in the restaurant closeby !

"Panagía Forvotissa" in Asinou

by globetrott

From outside this tiny church in Asinou looks just like a small farmhouse, but lots of tourbuses in front of it might make you wonder to step in !"Panagía Forvotissa" in Asinou is one of the most important and most beautiful churches of Cyprus and it was granted the title "UNESCO-World-Heritage".There is a large carpark and just 2 restaurants close to the chapel, no other houses and the next village is in a distance of 4km.Dont miss to take a look also at the "natural belfry" next to the church: The bell was simply fixed on a solid branch of a tree, it looks funny and works fine as well, so why invest into a real belfry for such a small chapel in the mountains.
