Kykkos Monastery

by globetrott

Kykkos Monastery is the largest and most popular monastery in Cyprus, and almost any tourbus will take you there, but it is by far not the most beautiful in my personal opinion. You should be prepared, that this large monastery is still in use and its mosaiques are quite modern, the most of them are dating back to the 20th century. There is a museum as well and there you will see a lot of icons of former centuries.A lot of touristbuses are coming to Kykkos almost every day, there are souvenirshops, restaurants and other shops closeby, so be prepared that this is more of a tourist-spot than a peaceful and quiet place like you normally expect from a monastery.Photography is allowed in this monastery except for the museum there !

Paphos Harbour

by cheekymarieh

This view of the harbour is taken from the top of the medieval fort. The whole of the town is a listed UNESCO world heritage site. The original town was located around a small harbour but there was rapid expansion which has led to the major tourist complexes being built outside the main area. One of the main areas is Coral Bay.It is the former capital of Cyprus and has many important historical buildings and ruins. The medieveal fort wa rebuilt by the Ottomans after they captured the island in the 16th century.Other important spots include:The Tomb of the KingsHouse of DionysusAyios Solomoni ChurchPanayia Chrysopolitissa.

The beautiful village of Phoini or (Fini)

by greekcypriot

If you happen to pass by the village of Phoini, ask to see Mr. Theofanis Pilavakis. He is the owner of the Private Art museum, and he can show you his collection which I found very interesting and of course somebody who wants to buy something can do so at the museum. There are all sorts of different things on sale –mostly clay pots. The village prides for its unique and extensive tradition in pottery with history going back into the centuries. Locals also make wooden chairs, and there is a workshop in the village which produces –loukoumia (turkish delight).

Horse Riding in Kalavasos

by greekcypriot

Those who love horse riding are given the chance to do so.While on a recent trip to Kalavasos I spent some time at the range which I found very interesting. There are some other small animals there too, and children will sure have fun out there. It is one or two kilometres from Kalavasos.

The Dam of Kalavasos in the District of Larnaca

by greekcypriot

The Dam is not very far from the village of Kalavasos (10 minutes drive). It was constructed in 1985 and the dam embankment has a maximum height of 58 metres and a crest length of approximately 700 metres. The day I got to the dam I saw people fishing so I guess it is fine with fishing in case somebody wishes to do so.It is beautiful, and it is worth visiting if you are in Kalavasos or the round area.

Kalavasos in the Larnaca District

by greekcypriot

The beautiful village of Kalavasos is about 40 km south west of Larnaca, and not far from Limassol. It is a popular destination with many Agro Hotels in the area, and it is popular with foreigners who come here to see the different sites.Very near Kalavasos is the fishing village of Maroni and Zygi full of Fish Tavernas.Kalavasos used to be a village with Turks living peacefully with Cypriots. This is obvious and there is still the mosque in the village. In 1967 the Turks deserted the village and thus all the Muslim inhabitants moved to the neighbouring village of Mari.

KITION - Larnaca

by greekcypriot

One of the most important ancient city-kingdoms, with architectural remains dating back to the 13th century B.C. In about 1200 BC it was rebuilt by the Mycenaean Greeks, and excavations have revealed cyclopean walls made of giant blocks of stone, and a complex of five temples.Monday to Friday 7.30am to 2.30pm Thursdays 3pm to 6pm (except July and August)(The excavations have stopped now I was told on a recent trip due to lack of money)???My photo is taken from a distance!

Latsi or Latchi

by greekcypriot

It is a popular destination and very near the Aphrodite Baths.I have been here several times, ....and I am planning a trip the following week as well. There are fish tarverns by the coast and the harbour, and there is a long beautiful pebbled beach in this area as well. The harbour is also beautiful because it is full of sailing boats.

The Venetian Walls of Famagusta (North)

by greekcypriot

These Venetian walls of Famagusta go round the old town area. I was here in November with some friends and we climbed up to see the port.If you are in the north side, this spot here is a must visit. You can have a walk behind the walls because there is the old city where you can find many shops and restaurants. (Vast amounts of stone and building material was plundered from Famagusta to build Alexandria and the Suez Canal in Egypt).(I trully hope that someday very soon, Cyprus will be free again)! It is so difficult for us Cypriots driving to these beautiful monuments as visitors and return to the south with a broken heart!

Tip Photo
Apostolos Andreas Monastery (North)

by greekcypriot

Apostolos Andreas monastery is located at the northeastern part of Greece and it is now in the hands of the Turks. Before the invasion of the Turks in 1974, this Monastery was very popular to Cypriots. Now the monastery is in a real bad condition because the Turks did not care to restore it. When I visited it myself the condition of the Monastery was the worst. It urgently needs restoration. It is so pity to leave such monuments be destroyed! I have strong memories when I was a child when we visited this monastery and spent 2 or 3 days here. It was a paradise then. There are beautiful beaches nearby. I feel really bad writing all these about this beautiful place when my country is occupied by Turks. Nothing seems to be the same now.
