Ayios Neophytos Monastery

by greekcypriot

Ayios Neophytos Monastery is located just 20 minutes from Paphos town centre and this really is a trip not to be missed.I was here the previous week, and what astound me was the many cats scattered all over the premises of the monastery. There are so many different kinds. I believe it is out here that I have seen some of the most beautiful cats in my life. There is even a sign put by the monks stating that cats can be fed at that point.Besides the cats, I can assure that you will have some spectacular views from out there.Opposite the monastery there are some caves with frescoes. Neophytos is said to have lived for 45 years in one of the caves and you can actually go inside and view this. His last five years were spent in a cave further up the rock face.Taking photos are prohibited inside the hermitage:

40 Columns in Paphos

by greekcypriot

Saranta Kolones is the ruin of an ancient castle located just north of Paphos harbour. In Greek it means the 40 columns.Saranta Kolones was built by the Lusignans in 1192 but thirty years later the castle was destroyed by an earthquake. What you see today are the ruins of Saranta Kolones and some of the magnificent arches and columns that were used in its construction.

PLANNING VISITING CYPRUS THIS YEAR?

by greekcypriot

If you are planning visiting Cyprus this year I believe you have done the best choice.Of course it depends when you are coming. Summers can be very hot and humid and the hottest months are July and August.Of course there are some of the most beautiful beaches out here and if you are a person who loves beach activities, then Cyprus can be a paradise.Of course for me, as a tip here I want to state that Cyprus is not for summer lovers only. The island is beautiful the year round. For me the best of all is when tourists leave and it is more peace and quiet. When in Cyprus don’t leave without including at least one Agro Hotel where you can spend a few days and get to know the real authentic people of the island. To ensure you get the most out of your trip to Cyprus you need to plan for it well in advance. You will need to have a passport or a visa in order to go to Cyprus. If however you are in...

Aghios (Saint) Minas Convent

by greekcypriot

The Convent of St. Minas is solely run by nuns and it is very popular on the island.A 15th century convent.Photos are prohibited here as in most monasteries but I managed to get one or two.Besides performing their religious rites the nuns living here produce honey, fruit preserves and also paint beautiful icons which they sell as well. A small shop in the monastery offers the visitor the opportunity to purchase these products. The entrance door closes at sharp 12:00 for lunch and it opens again at 2:00 pm.

The Salt Lake in January

by greekcypriot

On my recent trip to Cyprus, I got another picture of the beautiful Salt lake and a grate spot on the island. There are flamingoes in the lake..but not near the coast. Other species like swans and different kind of ducks have also emigrated here and give life to the lake. The contrast of green, blue and grey, the beauty of the surround area and the reflections in the lake make the place look like paradise. At least it is to me because I am from Larnaca and I dearly love this place.I am sure you will enjoy seeing my pictures!

The District Archaeological Museum in Larnaca

by greekcypriot

The collection of exhibits in this Museum goes back to the Neolithic age up to the Roman period, and in one ofthe two rooms there are sculptures and terra-cotta figures – mainly female torsos.Mycenean vases, pottery and a big collection of different ornaments in bronze, glass and clay are exhibited in the second room.An authentic tomb and the skeleton found in one of the houses of Choirokitia is exhibited in thismuseum, and when I see it I consider including Choirokitia in my –must see list before I fly backto Greece.A bit further in the same area and behind the garden, on a hill called Pambula excavations in the1970’s brought to light the ancient port of the City-Kingdom of the archaic and classical years. The port is in a better condition than any other ancient man-made port ever discovered, but to see it one has to get the permission of the Director of the Larnaca District Museum, and...

St. Mamas Church Icon Museum

by ozalp

This museum-church is by the archeological museum in Guzelyurt. We found the person who had the key and entered. Since it was the first church we have been to, it amazed us with its diversity.St Mamas was a poor hermit who hadn’t paid tax to Roman soldiers. When they captured him, he saved a lamb from the attack of a lion and entered the town on the back of the lion.A grave is located under the wall of this church. We’ve been told that it is the grave of St. Mamas and for the believers who want to reach the saint while the church is closed, the sarcophagus is located under the wall. You can see it both inside and outside of the church. There were these ear shaped offerings attached to the curtain over the casket. We learned that Orthodox’s believe if they offer something in the shape of their diseased body part, the saint will cure it. St. Mamas’ specialty was ears, I suppose.
