Apostolos Andreas Monastery

by ozalp

We’ve lost our way several times on the road to Karpass Peninsula, so we missed the Sunday Mass. Since the road and the view around monastery were so beautiful we haven’t been so upset. We were welcomed by a herd of lazy cats, surrounded the monastery. It was a perfectly sunny day in January, so they were sunbathing at the porch. There was a small local market with vendors hoping to earn a few coins from the visitors. We walked inside and it was a whole different world. This wasn’t the first time that I was seeing a functioning Orthodox monastery but it still was fascinating with icons, huge candlesticks, and enormous human figures from wax… We weren’t the only visitors, some people from Southern Cyprus; I assume, prayed and lit a candle. Also there is a sacred fountain here. Visitors can take home some water with plastic containers which can be bought there.

Vuni Palace

by ozalp

There was almost nothing left from this palace, except base lines of the buildings. The most exciting part is reaching there. After a long and hard drive we finally found a place to park our car. If we met a car before this point, I don’t know what we could do. The palace must have a great view because the place still has it. Everything here is left to your imagination but we were travelling too fast to dream about it.You don't miss nothing if you don't visit Vuni, except the adventurous drive and view.

Shipwreck Museum

by ozalp

You can see a shipwreck from 4th century BC in Kyrenia Castle. The shipwreck is the only example from Greece’s classical age. After a salvage expedition between 1967 and 1969, the preservation of the timber parts continued during 1970. You can even see its load in this museum. Almond seeds are not in their natural color but still recognizable.

Kyrenia (Girne) Castle

by ozalp

This castle is one of the first images I’ve seen in Cyprus; but I’ve visited it very late. Some Cypriot friends recommended us to visit it because of some schemes explaining the historical evolution of Cyprus. What we saw were some dull decors with mannequins. I’m not a fan of this kind of exhibitions. They give me a creepy feeling and a fake impression.Yet Kyrenia Castle has something to offer. There is a huge shipwreck from 4th century BC inside a room which we entered from inner court of the castle. This place is called Shipwreck Museum and it is a must see, because this shipwreck is the only example from Greece’s classical age. There are also some arranged scenes to show how ancient Cypriots lived in the rooms by the shipwreck museum. Also the courtyard and the vista over the castle walls are worth to see. And there is a church called Church of St. George at the entrance of the...

Salamis

by ozalp

These ruins must be the most famous monuments of Cyprus. The ancient city is located 6 km north of Famagusta. We’ve visited them on our way from Karpas to Famagusta. After a long day on the road, we couldn’t spend much time here as I wanted. We’ve seen some beautiful sculptures standing by the wall which are surrounding a rectangular area, some nicely paved road, some gigantic columns but couldn’t go further.Salamis is located by the sea. Since it was an important port, it must be one of the wealthiest cities of its era. You can still see this even from the greatness of the city and the roads. The legend says that Salamis was founded by a mythical hero, Teucer in 11th century BC.The biggest amphitheatre in Cyprus is in Salamis with a seat capacity of 15000. Salamis excavations started in 1952 and lasted until 1974. The archeological collections found in here and in Enkomi can be seen in St....

Soli Ruins

by ozalp

This place is special for me, because I am the engineer who designed the roof above the area years ago. I still remember how much we worked on the support locations, because there is a precious monument under the roof. I designed lots of projects in Cyprus, I am working on one right now, but Soli is the most special one. So this visit was more important for me.Soli is situated on the north coast of the island. Actually it is a few kilometers away from the coast now. The roof I designed is protecting the mosaic covered ground. Some walking paths over stilts were placed above the mosaics, so visitors can take a closer look to them. Do not miss the bird figure, a goose or swan, while looking the mosaics. A path by the mosaic tiled area goes to the amphitheatre. It is quite well preserved and the upper levels of the seats have a great view of both the sea and the stage. The city is named...

Wild Donkeys

by ozalp

Donkeys of Cyprus are famous. They are still living a wild life in their preserved area in Karpaz region of the Island. We saw few of them. We were driving to the monastery and they were wandering around. Couldn’t go near but took some photos from the road without disturbing them.If you want to see them, you should go all the way to Karpaz. The best itinerary is to combine this trip with Apostolos Andreas Monastery visit.

Karpaz

by ozalp

This is the sharp end of Cyprus. It’s like pointing Turkey for some reason. There isn’t a big city here, only small villages. We were enthusiastic travelers, so we had all the ambition to step into every single point on the map. That’s why we ended up here. Just to say that “we’ve been there”, we drove all the way. At the end we had some nice views, visited a beautiful Orthodox church (unfortunately we missed the Sunday ceremony), and drank a good Cyprus coffee on our way back. Top notch of this trip was seeing wild donkeys on the road. Karpaz is a preservation area for them.

Bellapaix Monastery

by ozalp

After all these times, when I think about Cyprus and close my eyes, I see Bellapaix Monastery. It is one of the most impressive buildings in the island. Cyprus was fully green in the season we’ve visited there, and the picturesque ruins were shockingly beautiful. We came here early in the morning and had a breakfast first in Bellapais Gardens. Then we visited the monastery. Its location is breathtaking: Built by a cliff and looking over to Kyrenia. The village is above the monastery. Climbing its roads takes an effort but it is worth that.Bellapais Monastery sometimes called Bellapais Abbey. A theory about the name that it comes from French “Abbaye de la paix” which means “Monastery of peace”.Monastery has been founded during Lusignan rule, around 1200, by Augustinian monks. Its courtyard reminded me the monasteries in the computer game Diablo (note to myself: start it again with rouge or...

Cikartma Plaji

This is the place where Turkish military forces marched into Cyprus in 1974. Now there is a monument here. The monument designed by two famous Turkish architects, Yasar Marulyali and Levent Aksut and I am working in one of their companies now.The main photo is taken from Altinkaya Restaurant.
