St. Hilarion Castle

by ozalp

The castle is named after a hardly known local saint who lived in here as a hermit. A monastery had been built to protect his relics. The castle dates back to Byzantion era. It belonged to a defense system against Arab invaders with Kyrenia, Buffavento and Kantara Castles. I’ve been to just two of them: Kyrenia and St. Hilarion but heard that the other two are more impressive.Castle strengthened during Lusignan era and used as a summer residence by royal family. This place claims the honor of being the model to the castle in Disney’s Cindrella. But for my part, I couldn’t see any resemblance. The castle is on the road between Nicosia and Kyrenia, located on a hill. There is a small ethnographic museum in the first halls. A room is dedicated to Disney’s scetches about Cindrella movie.I thing I like the most is the small informative plates by the trees. The name of the tree (both in Turkish...

The Blue House

by ozalp

Here comes a strange story and a quirky attraction. This house belonged to a lawyer, an eccentric man called Paulo Paulides. He has been told us as a gun smuggler and also he was the lawyer of Makarios. I think the blue house was designed by him. Strange details must be the product of an extraordinary mind. I had a strange impression about this place, like it was a movie scene from 70ies.The house is completely hidden. You cannot see it before coming close enough. With the bright blue windows and doors and white walls, it is so Mediterranean from outside. Since it is in a military zone, an officer welcomed us at the entrance. We left our id cards and followed him. The first thing we saw was a fountain in the house, then the study room of Paulides. We’ve been told that his chair becomes harder in time to prevent sleeping during work. Don’t ask me how. I couldn’t test it but I witnessed the...

St. Barnabas Monastery, Icon and Archeology Museum

by ozalp

St. Barnabas is a local saint of Cyprus. He is accredited as the man bringing Christianity to the island. This monastery dedicated to him, is located near Famagusta. The monastery has a nice courtyard with beautiful flowers and cactuses. The halls surrounding the courtyard house a collection of artifacts from Salamis, Enkomi, etc. and the church has a rich collection of icons. We came here by car and parked it in front of the building. I am not sure if there is a public transportation. We also visited the small chapel after the museum. It covers the tomb of St. Barnabas. When we enter the chapel we heard a desperate cry from the lower part of the chapel. A man, an expat, was crying and asking for help from the saint. It was an extremely dramatic moment and completely changed our cheerful mood.

Enkomi Ruins

by ozalp

On the road to Famagusta from Nicosia, we left the main road to visit St. Barnabas Monastery and Icon Museum. On this route we saw Enkomi. Excavations are still on the run and the place has not much to offer. Yet you can stop by and see the base plans of the ruined buildings. Enkomi is a Bronze Age city, possibly the capital of a place called Alasiya. It was an important copper smelting and trading center between 16th and 12th centuries BC. The city had a natural harbour. 3 Levels have been found during excavations which were ended by an earthquake around 1050 BC. After the earthquake and years Enkomi is now on the east of Masarya plain.Artifacts found in here are now being exhibited in British Museum (you can see some of their collections here), Louvre and several other museums.

Tree of idleness

by ozalp

Lawrence Durrell says that the most idle people of the whole Cyprus live in Bellapaix and he says that there is a tree of idleness at the village square to sit under. This tree is still there and you can be idle under it if you want to. There is a kahve (café) under the tree and offers delicious Cyprus coffee and great Bellapaix Monastery view. We sat here but it took a while to leave tha café, s it must be true. You can find a piece of writing about Lawrence Durrell and his “tree of idleness” near that tree across the café.

Famagusta

by ozalp

This is the city of an important and famous university of Cyprus. And the city my friend lived once. Also the Salamis city ruins and “Kapali Maras” are here. We saw all of them, Kapali Maras from outside of course. Magosa is the Turkish name of Famagusta. The city has a marvelous castle and inside the city walls there is still life. I mean it is not only an old structure to visit as a museum. There are still houses and shops inside. Also there is a museum of a prison in which our famous poet Namik Kemal kept here. An old cathedral called Saint Nicolas is now used as a mosque called Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque which is the biggest mosque of Northern Cyprus.Cyprus’ famous Sema branded raki is produce of Famagusta. I’ve seen a small factory of them while returning to Kyrenia. Maybe you can buy some here.

Faces of Cyprus

by ozalp

On the first day of our Cyprus trip, we visited Guzelyurt Village, Soli and Vuni ruins. Then we drove forward to the border and saw a huge tangerine tree in Yesilirmak village. We stopped for taking some photos. There was a lovely small house in a beautiful garden, under the tree. A man with a big, warm smile came out and welcomed us. We lately realized the sign: “Faces of Cyprus”.The man was Ismail Isilsoy. He has a small workshop attached to the house and his “faces” are living there with him. He said that the villagers bring him drift wood from the sea and he makes this sad, worried, dreamy and alive faces. We –four women- forgot what we were doing and stayed in this workshop until we all found “the right man”. Then we wrote down our comments on the walls. We all took some pictures in the workshop. I still regret that I didn’t take a picture of Ismail Isilsoy. I still remember his huge...

Read "Bitter Lemons", visit Durrell's house

by ozalp

"Bitter Lemons" is the name of a book of Lawrence Durrell, written between 1953 and 1956. He is one of my favorite writers since I've read Alexandria Quartet.I’ve started to read Bitter Lemons after I returned from this trip and liked it very much. He moved to Cyprus from Serbia and lived there for three years. He bought a house in Bellapaix after living with his friend in Kyrenia for a while. And I saw his house walking the streets of Bellapaix, and this is why I bought the book.He tells his story with his amazing writing skills, which I really love. He tells people, his friends, the life, the stories of other people… He tells about the woods of his house, how they been brought from Anatolia. Since there weren’t many trees on the island, people had brought lumbers floating behind their boats. The best houses were from this kind of wood. His house has been told lively in the book. Now,...

Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque

by ozalp

Former Saint Nicholas Cathedral, later Hagia Sophia Church is now used as a mosque in Famagusta. It is the biggest mosque of Northern Cyprus and the largest medieval building in Famagusta. The building started in 1298 and it became a cathedral in 1328. After Ottomans capturing Famagusta, it converted into a mosque in 1571.The cathedral has been built during French Lusignan dynasty. They brought the gothic architecture to Cyprus. Saint Nicholas Cathedral is in Gothic style. Wikipedia says that its style is flamboyant Gothic but since this style is dated to 15th century, I doubt it. Since the temple is now being used as a mosque, all the depictions are covered or removed.A pedestrianized area surrounds the cathedral. There is a huge ficus sycomorus tree in front of the building. It could be a savior during summer. This place is in use so we've waited the praying time to end before entering...

The word "ageloktisti" in Greek means "built by the Angels".This 11th century Byzantine church is worth visiting! It was erected over the ruins of an Early Christian basilica. The original apse survived together with one of the finest pieces of Byzantine art, a rare 6th century mosaic of the Virgin Mary and Child between the two archangels, which rival the Ravenna Mosaics.
