Saint Lazarus is the patron saint of Larnaca.It had become his second home after his resurrection by Christ, and he lived here for another 30 years. He was ordained Bishop of Kition by Saints Barnabas and Mark.A Church that should not be missed.
The municipal museum is housed in a 1881 building, which was the residence and office of the first colonial Port Master of Larnaca.On the ground floor is the City Museum with exhibits emphasizing the long, glorious and uninterrupted history of the town.A large collection of the city coins of the late 6th century and fabulous collection of city photographs through the years dating from 1850, are among the most interesting exhibits.On the second floor are located the city's archives which are open only for researchers as they include rare books, editions and documents.
Five old Larnaca Customs warehouses, built in the colonial style (1881) have recently been ronovated and turned into the Larnaca Municipal Cultural Centre.It houses the Municipal Gallery and the only Palaeontology Museum in Cyprus, where the ancient fossilised remains of pygmy elephants and hippopotami that once lived on the island can be seen.The Centre has also facilities for occasional exhibitions.
Built in 1625, it was used as a prison in the first years of British rule. It houses the District Mediaeval Museum. The fort is also used as the Larnaca Municipal Cultural Centre during the summer.Monday to Friday - 09:00 to 19:00
The oldest privately owned museum in Cyprus, set up by Dimitrios Pierides (1811 - 1895).It houses ancient, medieval, Byzantine and more recent ojects belonging to the Pierides family.A display case of modern Greek and Cypriot sculptures can be seen in the courtyard.
Built in 1816 over the tomb of Umm Haram, allegedly a relative of Prophet Mohhamed who died on this spot in 649 during the first Arab raids.The Mosque is an important place of Moslem pilgrimage ranking immediately after the shrines of Mecca, Medina and Al Aqsha in Jerusalem.Daily:07.30 - 19:30 June - August.09:00-18:00 April-May & Sept-Oct.09:00-17:00 November-March.There is a small entrance fee here.
The mosaic decorations and the mythological compositions are the main characteristics of this restored Roman villa, dating back to the second century A.D. The name “House of Dionysus” is mainly due to the many representations of Dionysus, the god of wine. The house most probably belonged to a member of the ruling Roman class or to a wealthy citizen of Paphos.
Paphos castle is located in Kato Paphos at the harbour. This castle was originally built to protect the harbour and was a Byzantine fort.The castle itself is a stunning stone walled castle built on the harbour. There is an arched battle way bridge that connects the castle to the harbour itself. There are very few windows in this castle but the view from the top platform is magnificent and from here you can see Kato Paphos in all its glory. It really is a site worth seeing and for those interested in culture; Paphos Castle is a definite must see during your trip to Cyprus. Paphos Castle is listed in the UNESCO list of world heritage sites and is fully protected.Once inside the castle there is not much to see or do but once you reach the top platform you will see the breath taking view of the marina.
