Girne/Kyrenia Harbour

by Arkeolog

The best-known place in Girne/Kyrenia is the world-renowned Girne Harbour. This small harbour is the essence of peace and relaxation. At times, Girne Harbour is a small refuge for weary boats completing a long overseas journey and at other times it is a starting point for captains excitedly yearning to explore. Formed from a natural cove and protected by a breakwater, this port has attracted the interest of people throughout the ages. Girne/Kyrenia Harbour presents a harmonious view with a host of pleasant sights. The Mediterranean-style stone houses surrounding the harbour and the boats lined up in front of cafes along the water’s edge make the scene even more pleasant. It seems as if all the boats with colourful flags from many nations have come for refuge in this harbour with the common desire to experience this unique haven on the Mediterranean. This picture of Girne/Kyrenia becomes...

Visit the Kolossi Castle

by greekcypriot

The Kolossi Castle is a stronghold a few kilometers outside the city of Limassol. It held a great strategic importance and contained production of sugar, one of Cyprus' main exports in the Middle Ages. The original castle was possibly built in 1210 by Frankish military when the land of Kolossi was given by King Hugh I to the Knights of the Order of St John of Jerusalem (Hospitallers) (see also Commandaria), and the present castle was built in 1454 by the Hospitallers. Besides the Hospitallers, other dwellers in the castle include Richard the Lionhearted, and the Templars. It is one of the most important medieval archaeological monuments. The stunning signature of the castle informs that the castle was in RIGAS KIPRU hands and that no one could own defensive castles or weapons. In the 14 century the castle was used as a sugar apothecary. This Crusader castle of Kolossi towers over a...

Bellapais Abbey

by Arkeolog

The Monastery of Peace or Abbaye de la Paix as Bellapais Abbey was originally known is one of the most excellent examples of Lusignan period Gothic architecture in the Near East. It is located in the pretty town of Bellapais just 10 minutes from the bustling town of Kyrenia and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Northern Cyprus. Made famous in part by Lawrence Durrell and his book ‘Bitter Lemons’, the abbey is simply not to be missed. Originally the site of the abbey was home to Augustinian monks from around 1187 with construction of the Abbey or monastery building beginning in 1198 and taking some seven years. Further significant construction work took place on the monastery during the reign of King Hugh III of France between 1267 and 1284 and then during the reign of King Hugh IV between 1324 and 1359. The Abbey looks very impressive. Also it is a good photo point. You...

SHIPWRECK MUSEUM IN GIRNE(Kyrenia) CASTLE

by Arkeolog

This Museum houses the oldest trading ship known to us with her cargo, which was raised from the bottom of the sea. The ship sailed in the Mediterranean during the life time of Alexander the Great and his successors. She sank in open waters less than a mile from the anchorage of Kyrenia. The evidence point to her being taken by rough seas around the year 300 B.C, when she was rather old. The objects in the museum are the original ones carried on board during her last voyage about 2300 years ago. From them we can learn about the life of those traders. More than 400 wine amphoras, mostly made in Rhodes, consist the main cargo, and they indicate that the ship made an important stop at that island. Also Castle's view is impressing .

Explore the Troódos Mountains

by lihue

The wonderful landscape of the Troódos Mountains in the center of the island are, next to a hikers paradise, a beautiful alternative to the beaches. Picturesque villages, rugged rock formations and magnificent views are worth spending a few days in this area. Also, you can climb the highest peak of Cyprus, the Mount Olympus at an elevation of 1952 metres (6400 ft). In winter, the slopes are perfect for skiing. Many hiking trails make you experience these mountains much closer.

The dives where calm and the visibility just amazing.
