Cyprus Tourist Traps

  • Spelling of Names of Places

Road signs in Cyprus are written in both Greek and English. However you might experience a few problems with the names and spelling of some areas that you will come across on the Maps or Guides. Some names maintain the traditional English name, while others follow a more recent decision to transliterate the original Greek name.If you lucky and you...

  • When renting a car in Cyprus

Pay for your rental-car in advance, AND print out all the "smallprint" as well and take it with you ! I had booked it through my travelagent and there it stated clearly that all damages would be included, also in case that the glasses or tyres are broken etc.The agent at the airport tried it anyway to tell me, that a CWD is included, BUT I would...

  • Photos are Prohibited in Mosques

Don't dare take photos while people are praying in a Mosque. Also priests in general don't want people to take them photos most of the times. If you still want to take a photo of a Cypriot prist do so in a way that he won't see you.

  • In certain places Photos are prohibited

Don't forget to avoid taking photos near the airport or Military areas. If you are caught you can lose your camera and pay money. Also avoid taking photos in Nicosia while you are next to the Old Walls of the city where you can see Turkish soldiers who are so near. You never know. In the past they could shoot you, however I am not sure at this...

  • Don't book while you are on the go...

While you are in a street, or at a beach you might find boys going around with some advertisements for possible karaoke shows, or asking you to book at the suggested restaurant. Refuse politely, and ask him to tell you the name of the pub or restaurant and check this out yourself in your free time. Or you can just ignore him.

  • Eat at Places where you see Locals in

To be sure that you will have a good meal pick a restaurant where you see locals in.They surely know the place and have tested it over and over again. If you get to a restaurant and you understand that something is wrong, just get a refreshment and leave. Eat out cheaply at a souvlaki kiosk (kebab)

  • Offering Money to a Cypriot

If you are in Cyprus and you badly need some help either on the road or at the place where you stay, avoid giving money to a Cypriot. He will be offended. He does everything for you because he feels like it. Otherwise he would not do it. If you really want to pay back for what he did, you can invite him for a glass of wine, or a cup of coffee. Or...

  • Paphos seafront is being redone

HelloI went to Paphos Dec 2007 and the seafront is being redone. They have bordered the seafront off where the shops are. The harbour and Fort part is ok though. Abit of a pain but once it is done for this coming summer it will look great. You have to get to the shops along the seafront by walking though these boards etc, so not good for...

  • timeshare touts

In paphos we encounterd quite a lot of time share touts which was a little annoying when you jaust wanted to relax down by the harbour. But easy to ignore :-)) Do not even talk to a time share tout they will ask you. English? german? Italian? just put your hands in the air and say RUSSIAN and walk on :-)) always works

  • Price of meze

The price of a meze in Cyprus is between £7.00 and £9.00 per head, if you are asked for more than that move on to another, they will drop their price like a stone. Do not forget the number of tourists in Southern Cyprus is dropping dramatically, soon you will be able to name your own price.John

  • forget about taxis!

so expensive, once u open the door u pay ! so if u want to look around just rent a car from anywhere for a day or a week...roads are very easy even i can find my way to get to any destination,i don't know how to read a map!!! if u insist on taking a cab just expect to pay good money for a 10 min ride ,that if he doesn't take the longer road...

  • Down town/city centre and tourist area

Almost all the coastal cities in Cyprus are divided into two separate parts, i.e. city centre/old town and the tourist area, which can be 5 miles and even 15 miles away (in the case of Limassol) from each other. You really have to know where you're going if you take a service taxi. I guess you definitely want to go to the tourist area in Paphos...

  • Godess of love did NOT have this in...

The Baths of Aphrodite were horrible. There were rats scurrying in the trees overhead, bird crap everywhere in the little cesspool stank of urine and was unfit for anyliving being.(though I think I saw aa eel!) It was creepy and unhygenic, it may have been beautiful 2000 years ago but don't bother with the trip today.

  • MEZE

MEZE-selection of local food, you can find almost everywhere in Cyprus. Ask first for the price, as you can find on the menu -2 person min., but the price is per 1 person. And better to count the portions, as they like to bring less then on the list.

  • Look out when you go out for a...

Look out when you go out for a drink! If you ask something to drink and there is no price on the list, it’s very expensive

  • Perry's resturant, Pissouri Beach...

Beware of this resturant in Pissouri, it serves the smallest portions of any resturant in the village but more importantly it consistantly overcharges. When you ask for the bill they bring you a yellow piece of paper with the food and drink you have ordered scrawled on it, no prices marked only a total marked on the top of the bill. So if there are...

  • Pano Lefkara, lace making village.

Beware the man with one eye who will stop you on entry to the village and tell you there is no where to park. He will tell you to park in front of his shop. Then he will tell you the lace makers are just about to finish for the day and will take you into his shop & home to see the women making lace. Every thing in this shop is double the price of...

  • tourist "helpers"

Cypriots are generally very warm and hospitable people. However, there are those who are interested in your money only, so be careful when they offer assistance or transport - you can end up by paying for what you thought was a friendly favour! Also be careful with "promotions" and "special offers"- almost all of them contain a hidden catch Simply...

  • service taxis

Service taxis which operate between cities are sometimes the only way of getting around (see my transportation tip), and they surely make the most of it! This is what happened to me on more than one occasion: I wanted to go from Paphos to Nicosia by taxi and I called well in advance to book, which turned out to be a mistake, because when the driver...

  • Watch the other side !

See the Turks -roll up roll up ladies and gentlemen see how the non christian people of Cyprus are doing .You will be thrilled and excited........... No need to peek at them secretly the walls are down now you can walk to turkish side and take a closer look they are no different from any other peoples of the world. No need to fall for another...

  • Maybe we were lucky but I...........

Maybe we were lucky but I think Cyprus is one of the most hassle free places I have visited. I think the most harassment we had here was from the lovely Papa Doinisios in the photo to buy his oranges !(~_~)

  • On Top Of Each Other

Nissi Beach in July and August. It is so crowded with people that you can hardly move. You acn hardly move because the sunbeds are virtually on top of each other. If you're in Ayia Napa head to Macronnossis or the harbour beach (in front of the Grecian Bay). They are much quieter in August and the quality of the sea for swimming is much higher.

  • beware of Turks operating our Stolen...

Kerynia is a beautiful place , but occupied by force.Avoid eating or staying in Stolen Greek properties.Avoid buying any property well

  • Politics !!

The Greeks on south will tell you North Cyprus is an occupied area...Wrong !The turkish soldiers are only there to protect the turks living there which Greeks wants to get rid of.. • Larnaca Airport - Coffee

C£2.80 was charged for two cups of dirty luke warm dishwater that did not look or taste like it was any relation to coffee. Added insult it was not even served with a smile. When we complained we just got shrugged shoulders. The only unfriendly Cypriots we encountered. Take bottles of water or fizzy drinks with you, better still if you have a flask...

  • Tony's Restaurant

When you walk outside here and look at the menu, that's all that is needed for Tony to appear (a la Mr Ben) like magic and gentle patter you up to bring you inside. Once inside, getting your bill so you can leave is the real fun part of your evening. Watch out if you get asked if you want to join a quiz, as soon as you say YES, you then get charged...

  • all operators in the area...

all operators in the area offer a day to egypt for £166 cyprus pounds per person.DAYLIGHT ROBBERY.ive been to eygpt and wanted to show my new husband the size of the last wonders of the world. if we had been allowed more than 15mins at the pyramids and more than 10 mins at the spynx then the rest may not have mattered, but the sunset cruise on the...

  • Just be careful of the taxi...

Just be careful of the taxi drivers. They are not all reputable taking people out of their way and demanding extortionate prices. Fix your price before you even get into the vehicle.Be careful with the car hire firms, even the well known companies. Not all of them believe in insuring the cars but they will still take your money. Make sure you have...

  • Don't go for food at the...

Don't go for food at the tourist restaurants at the center of 'Laiki Geitonia' in Nicosia. You will pay alot of money and the food is for tourists:-).Try the small places which sell Pitta Souvlaki and Gyro. Less money and better food.

  • Limassol

You may skip Limassol: there's an interesting fort and a nice boulevard (pic) here but that's about it. Still, many people visit the town as it's the main port of Cyprus and it has an extensive nightlife. The tourist area in on the east side of the town.

  • There are no real tourist...

There are no real tourist traps in Ayia napa, the shop owners never hassle you to buy, they are all to friendly. The only trouble you may have is if you get to close to the Pelicans on Nissi Beach, they may try to peck at you. I had no trouble when i took this picture but you have been warned.

  • These guys gouge you with a...

These guys gouge you with a smile on their faces. The prices are double or even more on their ice-cream and cold drinks. Don't buy from them unless you forgot your water bottle or are really 'dying' from lack of Ice Cream.
