Down town/city centre and tourist area

by Stroller

Almost all the coastal cities in Cyprus are divided into two separate parts, i.e. city centre/old town and the tourist area, which can be 5 miles and even 15 miles away (in the case of Limassol) from each other. You really have to know where you're going if you take a service taxi. I guess you definitely want to go to the tourist area in Paphos rather than the old town. The beach, the harbour and masaics (the archaeological sites) are all there! I made a mistake and asked the driver to drop me at the old town/city centre. Nobody told me I could take the bus when I asked. So I walked for over 30 minutes to go to the tourist area. There's not much to see in the old town and it's not even very close to the sea.But you might want to go or even stay at the old town of Limossol and Larnaca which are right on the sea front.

Godess of love did NOT have this in mind!

The Baths of Aphrodite were horrible. There were rats scurrying in the trees overhead, bird crap everywhere in the little cesspool stank of urine and was unfit for anyliving being.(though I think I saw aa eel!) It was creepy and unhygenic, it may have been beautiful 2000 years ago but don't bother with the trip today.

MEZE

by bobiko

MEZE-selection of local food, you can find almost everywhere in Cyprus. Ask first for the price, as you can find on the menu -2 person min., but the price is per 1 person. And better to count the portions, as they like to bring less then on the list.

Perry's resturant, Pissouri Beach Village.

by ealf2000

Beware of this resturant in Pissouri, it serves the smallest portions of any resturant in the village but more importantly it consistantly overcharges. When you ask for the bill they bring you a yellow piece of paper with the food and drink you have ordered scrawled on it, no prices marked only a total marked on the top of the bill. So if there are a few of you unless you have noted down the price of everything you have eaten or drunk you have no way of checking. There were only two of us and the bill was wrong both times in Perry's favour. Also be extremely cautious if paying by Visa. While we were there a couple who paid by Visa had the waiter leave the resturant with their Visa to take it to Perry's office further down the village, the excuse was the Visa machine in the resturant was not working. The waiter was away for more than 20 minutes and when the Visa was returned it was no longer...

Pano Lefkara, lace making village.

by ealf2000

Beware the man with one eye who will stop you on entry to the village and tell you there is no where to park. He will tell you to park in front of his shop. Then he will tell you the lace makers are just about to finish for the day and will take you into his shop & home to see the women making lace. Every thing in this shop is double the price of the same goods in the village proper. If you enter his shop it is almost impossible to leave without buying something. The rest of the village is dying because this person stops all tourists who enter the village and then the tourists go no further. If you do not enter the village by the first turnoff but carry on to the second turn off for the village you will then avoid this shop and person. The village is very nice and the goods from the little shop with the old woman dressed in black are the cheapest in the village, same quality and very...

tourist "helpers"

by anna-m

Cypriots are generally very warm and hospitable people. However, there are those who are interested in your money only, so be careful when they offer assistance or transport - you can end up by paying for what you thought was a friendly favour! Also be careful with "promotions" and "special offers"- almost all of them contain a hidden catch Simply and straighforwardly ask how much that would cost: if the offer was genuine, they will refuse your money

service taxis

by anna-m

Service taxis which operate between cities are sometimes the only way of getting around (see my transportation tip), and they surely make the most of it! This is what happened to me on more than one occasion: I wanted to go from Paphos to Nicosia by taxi and I called well in advance to book, which turned out to be a mistake, because when the driver came to pick me up, I was the only passanger and then I wasted almost an hour till he was driving around picking up other passangers. When we were finally all set (or better, cramped up), it turned out that the car had no air-condition, which the driver "compensated for" by opening all the windows in the car and risking us all getting a pneumonia :) If you have to get a service taxi, call a day in advance and demand an air-conditioned car. It may not shorten your trip, but it will make it at least more pleasant The best alternative is always...

Maybe we were lucky but I...........

by freya_heaven

Maybe we were lucky but I think Cyprus is one of the most hassle free places I have visited. I think the most harassment we had here was from the lovely Papa Doinisios in the photo to buy his oranges !(~_~)

On Top Of Each Other

by cheekymarieh

Nissi Beach in July and August. It is so crowded with people that you can hardly move. You acn hardly move because the sunbeds are virtually on top of each other. If you're in Ayia Napa head to Macronnossis or the harbour beach (in front of the Grecian Bay). They are much quieter in August and the quality of the sea for swimming is much higher.
