Car Hire in Northern Cyprus

by lifepro

I was in Cyprus once before and I paid dearly for the taxi service. This time I was determined to rent a car. For a week I wrote and called many companies. You talk write and agree on everything and at the end they tell you that they have no car available !! This happened so many times I began to think that there is something illegitimate going on. Because they ask you to fill in their forms and get your address phone etc. If they have no cars what they will do with this information ? If I already did not pay for the hotel and the airplane I would never go. I will try to find a car rental company in the city of Kyrenia once I get there. This means I will lose one day just for this. I hope at the end I get a decent experience but not a horror story. But it looks like they are far away from being professional. Anyone who writes about car rental experience must give the name of the car hire...

Motorcycle rentals in Cypros

by georeiser

There are several motorcycle rentals in Cypros. Ordinary training and drivers licence for motorcycle was not necessary. But a permit to drive a motorcycle was issued by the police after 5 minutes talk on the police station. This was strange and dangerous. I rented a Honda CB900, and drove around Ayia Napa and the places nearby. And also a long trip from Ayia Napa along the coastal road to Larnaca and Limassol (see photos).

Larnaca International Airport

by hopang

Larnaca International Airport is the main airport of the Republic of Cyprus. It was opened in 1975 after the Turkish invasion in 1974. The former international airport at Nicosia closed in 1974. It is not a very sophisticated airport by any standard with only one passenger terminal. Nevertheless approximately five millions passengers use the airport every year, the majority of them local and foreign tourists. Larnaca International Airport also comprises a cargo terminal and an engineering hangar. The airport is managed by Hermes Airports Ltd according to the airport's website below. You may also e-mail to the following address for further information regarding Larnaca International Airport:- info@hermesairports.com

Flying into Ercan airport

by george5b

All flights to and from Ercan airport (near Northern Nicosia) go via Turkey, although some flights to the UK only touch down for half an hour or so, meaning you don't have to change planes. If you are changing planes note that it is not possible to have your luggage checked through. Don't lissen to airline staff which tell you anything else. In the end they always realize that it isn't possible or worse : your luggage gets offloaded in Istanbul and you don't receive it once you reach your final desination. That means that you need to pick up your luggage in Turkey, go through customs and immigration, re-check the lugggage and got back thorugh immigration. I.e. leave at least 2-3 hours between connecting flights. If you are flying onward with the same aircraft, then there is no need to do this.Airlines flying to Ercan are Turkish Airlines, Cyprus Turkish Airlines, Pegasus, Atlasjet.Flights...

Transport from Larnaca to Nicosia

by george5b

Taxis from Larnaca airport to Nicosia cost around 40-50 euros. There is now an airport bus service which goes to Larnaca downtown and Nicosia city centre during daytime hours.Don't listen to the tourist guide books advertising so-called "shared-taxis". These do exist, but you have to arrange for them well in advance and they have nothing in common with the shared taxis you might now from other Middle Eastern countries.

Boat Cruise

by hopang

Boat cruise with stop for swimming is one of the popular tourist attractions in Cyprus. You may begin your boat cruise from many jetties around the island, the more popular one is from Aya Napa. The boat will take you along the coast right up to the ghost city of Famagusta and return back to the jetty. Onboard the boat are light meals and drinks where passengers can purchase at a reasonable price. We have certainly enjoyed this boat cruise! Please visit our Cyprus travelogues for more pictures of boat cruise in Cyprus.

Renting A Car in Cyprus

by scottdemaret

Be very careful when picking the car up, the agent will try to up-sell you options which the car probably already has. We had a car booked through Sixt, when we picked it up we were charged an extra 35.00 euros for air-con and 70 euros for a full tank of fuel and to bring it back empty.1. The car was a tiny little fiat, with a 1 litre engine, and only has a fuel capacity of 45 litres. At the current price of 1.05 euro a litre, that is a rip-off2. I was advised to bring the car back empty of fuel, I asked the agent how could I bring it back empty of fuel, as I would not get it there without fuel, all he could do was give an empty stare.3. The car I picked up was the only one left in the parking lot, the car was already assigned to me and already had air-con, so why charge extra for it. I asked if he could remove the air-con ;-) again, an empty stare.Anyway, the second time I hired a car,...

NO FERRY TO LEBANON

by DAO

There are currently no ferry boats running between Cyprus and Lebanon. They stopped a few years ago. I actually took the ferry between them, but they have been stopped for a couple of years now. You can go to Syria though. The link below shows all ferry services between Cyprus and other countries of the region. If they every re-instate the service, it would be listed here. (I will update this tip then as well!)You can, however, fly between the 2 countries with several airlines.

Car Rental is cheap and easy

by ronin308

I found it easiest to get around on Cyprus by renting a car for 3 days. There are many car rental places outside the hotels there so take your pick, not very expensive either. They do drive on the left hand side of the road so take your time starting out to get used to this if you haven't driven this way before. We found it was great to lie out at the beaches in the mornings and then when the wind picked up in the afternoon hop in the car and go for a spin.

Hire A Car

by steventilly

The best, and indeed the only way really, to see all that Cyprus has to offer is to hire a car. Public transport on the island is diabolical with only a couple of buses a day between major destinations, though all of the larger cities have a decent service within them and to their outskirts. We booked our car through our holiday company in advance and got well and truly fleeced, paying twice what it would have been if we'd booked locally (£20 Cypriot per day is typical of a local booking). The roads in Cyprus are pretty good, even in the mountains to the major destinations (Kykkos and other monsateries, the UNESCO churches, the main towns and villages). The motorways are superb, mainly beacuse there's hardly any traffic on them - in fact all of the roads were pretty quiet and only in the centres of towns did we see anything that looked like congestion.Speed limits are low - 30km/h in some...
