Cyprus Airways

by tvdm

Cyprus Airways connects the island with Europe and the Middle East. Apart from that, there are many European (charter) airlines that fly into Larnaca and/or Paphos.Buses run throughout the country, there are no trains. Taxi's are another good alternative (even if you travel between cities), especially if you're with a group of people.

turkish names

(turkish - english)Kibris = CyprusCity Names:Lefkoýa = NicosiaGazi Magusa (or Magosa) = FamagustaGirne = Kyreniaall signs are with turkish names... some people don't know the english names of places... so just get used to use the turkish names for cities.

Geting to north cyprus

by madrazoman

The only way to get there by plane is departing from turkey. it is a good idea to spend some days in istambul or other turkish city before coming here if you are going to pass though anyway. Anyway beware that if you got turkish cypriot stamp on your passport you may get banned for entering south part of island if you go in other occasion (the only way going to greek side is going all the way back to turkey, then going to greece or other country that has a flight to greek side and then you can go). By the way I readed somewere you can get the stamp in a different piece of paper so you can get it off your passport when you go back, but when I came they didn't ask, they just put the stamp on my passport. If you go to greek side you may get a permit to entering turkish part... but it is temporary .

not good public transportation

by madrazoman

going from famagusta to lefkosa can be difficult some times... every 30 minutes a bus arrives but you have to pray for bus drivers stop, then you have to pray for they let you go in (because some of them ask you for monthly bus card, of course in turkish) and then you have to pray to get a sit. This is not the end. When you arrive nicosia they get you to bus station and there is not other public transport than "taksi" which could get expensive... anyway north nicosia is not large and is possible to see much of it just by walking around. for example kaliforian restaurant is just about walking 30 minutes from bus station. Be sure to take buses before 6pm because the bus service stops at that time!!

Don't Travel This Way!

by Geoff_Wright

A warning picture of how not to travel to Cyprus! This wrecked ship, near Limassol, was rumoured to be an'insurance job', but I never did find out the real facts. Another VT member has a similar picture of a different ship, so wrecks must be quite common on these shores.

Local Transportation in the 70's

by Geoff_Wright

This is a photo of the local bus service from Limassol to Paphos (1978)! I remember that if you were on a country road and one of these buses was driving towards you, the safest thing was to pull off the road! The drivers would use the best part of the road, even if it was on your side. The 'Express' bus service was a similar Bedford coach, but with streamlining. I don't think it went any faster though.

Local Bus

by Roger_Sally

Local bus ideal travel most trips 50p, local music and smells guaranted, Taxis can be quite cheap as well, good idea to share with others cut's cost. Car hire is reasonable, off road 4 by 4 ideal, check insurance for off road as a lot of car parks are rough enough to be classed as off road, get an all included deal so if the worst happens you don't have to pay. ( Oh an it would seem it is expected you have mastered the art of driving with one arm hanging out of the drivers window strange custom! ).

Manage by yourself!

by Aurorae

I think that Cyprus might be the only country on the world there the public buses simply don't exist! If you want to go around Cyprus, the only possibility is to rent a car, or get an organized tour in the local travel agency. There are taxis (expensive!!!), but there are inter-city taxis, too, where a few people arrange to rent it and share expenses. That is at least acceptable! I still can't figure why don't they have regular bus lines... And let's not mention the trains, railways doesn't exist in Cyprus! I wonder how do old people go to places... On donkeys?

Hire Cars

by Maeniel

Better than the Moped, this is a lot more stable having four wheels. This will cost you a minimum of £30CYP a day for a jeep, up to £80CYP daily for a flashier model. The ability to go anywhere you want when you want is great. But be aware that there are a few problems with hire vehicles. The first is that there are not very many petrol stations around, so fill up every opportunity you get. Also, parking is not the easiest of things to find in this country, so be careful where you put it. Also, all hire vehicles, as driven by tourists, will have a red number plate. I was lucky, my Brother and I hired a jeep for £30CYP a day, but as there were no vehicles around, they upgraded us - a lot!. Our vehicle was top of the hire range. Lucky or what?

Moped

by Maeniel

The infamous Moped is the preferred method of travel around the island, and just about every moped you see on the roads will bear the red numberplate belonging to hire vehicles. Just be careful if you do intend to use these. Helmets are optional, the drivers on the island are maniacs and this is a recipe for disaster. The week before I arrived, a young man was knocked off of one and killed. Hospitals are far and few between... Here, you are looking to part with somewhere in the region of £15-£20 per day of hire.
