We thought the quieter side of Cyprus, Paphos, would have been free of timeshare touts (seen loads in Tenerife), but seems they have found here too. As you get off the bus in Paphos & walk towards the old castle in the bay, they pounce on you with scratch cards, & guess what ? everybody has won !!!! so they take you then to an office to try & sell you an apartment....we sat on the seawall & watched many people being taken in by them, some even getting into taxis to be taken away.....PLEASE don`t be taken in by them, remember "THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A FREE LUNCH". parking places everywhere you look by MrBill Visited Pafos for Carnival and ended up having a car accident. A minor one. There were cars double parked everywhere for the carnival celebrations. Some young guys stopped in the middle of the street in their 'sportscar' (sic) and would not move any further. I don't know why? Then there were several SUVs backed-up behind them. I was going the other way and I needed to get around a car parked illegally in front of a dumpster. As I manouvered around the parked car I side-swiped him. I have no idea how it happened? Maybe he backed into me? I don't know? In any case, very minor damage. We exchanged numbers and I still haven't heard from him. But annoying, and all caused by these idiots that parked in the middle of the street and would not move forward. I am getting so sick of the many near misses in traffic in Cyprus EVERYDAY. Idiots and bad drivers. It is like knowing you'll have an accident no matter how defensive you drive, but not knowing when? It can happen at anytime. It is like walking on egg shells the whole time. As you approach an intersection someone is making an illegal turn, someone has the nose of their car poked into the oncoming traffic, another is entering the stream of traffic from the wrong side of the street where they parked illegally, and a moped or motorbike is either illegally passing you on the lefthand side or is coming up the middle through the lanes of traffic. You have to pay attention all the time, and even then it is not a guarantee that someone won't hit your car. If you have to drive you better practice yoga and deep breathing techniques, too. Good luck and drive safe. Traffic Police Larnaca +24 804040 Limassol +25 805050 Pafos +26 806060 Leave a Comment

Landscape of Cyprus by rachel_sun You are ok to take photos almost anywhere in Cyprus. But you are not allowed to take pics near Attila and Green Lines and there are warning signs around to tell you not to do so.Another place to avoid are Military camps. Also such places as ports or airports are off limits taking pics.If you want to take pics in a museum, you normally need a licence to do so.Do not use a flash in churches and some churches may not allow and pics to be taken.Look for the sign of a camera with a line going through it.And whatever you do, dont ever take a pic inside a Mosque when people are praying in there. If you want to take pictures of Cypriot people it is good manners to at least smile and say"kalimera" or "merhaba".People such as priests and old ladies on donkies etc make great pics and will be ok if you ask them first and say you will send them a copy of the pic when you get it developed.Remember to get their address and post them their copy as you promised. It's all about manners and being polite.Smile and ask nicely. Pissori Street by rachel_sun Some spiders have dangerous bites but anti- venins are alvailable at hospitals etc.Scorpion stings are very very painful but are not life threatening unless the sting causes a bad reaction. There are snakes in Cyprus. If you are walking through long grass and undergrowth wear boots and long socks and trousers and dont go poaking around holes and walls where snakes may be hiding. If you are bitten get to hospital as anti-venins are available. If you are bitten by a snake, wrap the bitten part very tight and dont move the bitten part. The person should stay still to stop the circulation pumping the poison around the body.Try to see what kind of snake bite the person too so the right anti-venin can be given. If you are allergic to bites and stings make sure you take the right medication with you.My mum is and she takes plenty of creams and a special pen thing that she injects herself with if she is biten in a dangerous area.Check your boots before putting them on if in grassy and ground cover areas. My mum had a snake in her rental villa which she had to get a long stick and push it outside with.Just be careful near walls and sitting down etc too.Plaves where snakes will be hiding from the sun. Drive left by Arkeolog It is just a warning :) Traffic flows on the left lane. Traffic signs are international. The conditions of roads are very good. Cars entering TRNC must have a valid insurance certificate. For a tourist driver a valid national or international driving licence is accepted.

Fields near the coast by rachel_sun If it pretty safe for ladies to travel around Cyprus alone. We did not get any hastle or anything on our holiday. Some places in Cyprus ladies may be chatted up by the local men.But nothing to worry about.Just light hearted fun.The best way to handle with cheesy chat up lines is just to ignore the person. All in all Cyprus is a very safe place.Crime is very very low and things such as muggings are almost unheard of.People often dont lock their cars or homes as the crime rate is so low.The one thing to look out for is other tourists in the resorts. These are the people who mostly comitt crimes. One area to watch out for is the area which devides the North and South.Attila and Green Lines. This area is marked by barbed wire and watch towers etc.Dont stray here.Sometimes in this area there are demonstrations by Greek Cypriots and in the past people have been killed. So it is best to avoid this area, what ever side you are on. Because there are no lakes in north cyprus, all of the water comes from the sea and is some kind of salty. Its not healthy to drink it. There are many stores (markets), almost one in every corner, where you can get not so expensive water botles for less half a dollar (500,000LT). It is good to keep some if you feel thirsty at night... You can also find cola in every market but is more expensive than other places (1 dollar for 500ml). And of course beer (Efes and Miller). Even in the peaceful hollow of Pernera Bay, the evil Dr. Karaoke has cast his spell on unsuspecting package tourists... great to listen to for a couple of minutes from your room, but the place across from the hotel didn't close until about 4 each morning... Leave a Comment

Although you can drink the water from the tap without any adverse effects, I wouldn't recommend it. Much of the water on the island is desalinated and doesn't have a very good taste. It does vary in taste from area to area (even within the same village) I have found - in one apartment I used bottled water to make tea and coffee whereas about 0.5km away I was quite happy to make my tea without resorting to the bottles. There are water dispensing machines around the area and the water from these is certainly drinkable. It is also cheaper than buying bottles of water. When I was living there, I used to have a delivery of drinking water every week. Leave a Comment

How to drive like a Cypriot: + Always be on your mobile. + If a traffic light is on red, ignore it. + If you do have to stop at red, stop with your car all the way over the white line. + While at the red light, creep constantly forward. + If you're at red behind someone who did stop at the white line (a tourist) blare your horn at them if they don't start moving before the light goes green. + At blind junctions with mandatory STOP signs, drive straight out without stopping. + Or looking. + Ignore all speed limits, they're only for tourists. + In areas with mandatory NO OVERTAKING signs, ignore them and overtake. Force the oncoming traffic up onto the pavement or into a ditch. + Don't drive along steadily in slow traffic (assuming overtaking is absolutely impossible). Wait for a 10m gap to open up then floor the accelerator like an F1 car off the grid, before stamping on the brakes again to avoid hitting the traffic in front. + Buy a left-hand drive car so that you can't see what's coming towards you when you pull out to overtake a bus. + Watch the oncoming traffic veer into a ditch when you do pull out. And this is just from one week's driving over there!
