Insects and Diarrhoea

by rachel_sun

Cyprus has quite a few horrible insects that can bite.Mosquitoes are very common and biting flies etc in countryside locations.People who have blonde hair and light skin are attacked more than darker people.Getting a tan seems to give some protection against getting bitten.Mosquitoes do not have malaria but can cause narsty red sore bites etc.Having air-con helps and also using a plug in mozzie zapper and using a good insect repellant will help stop bites. You can also get those citroenella candles that mossies and insects do not like.Try and find insect repellants with DEETin them.My mum has terrible reactions to bites and has to take a special pen thing that if she is biten on mouth or throat she can use to stop her throat swelling so much she could die.Make sure you take all medications you may need. Diarrhoea----This can be caused just by a change of routine and food and water and...

Jet Lag-Prickly heat-Sunburn

by rachel_sun

Jet lag can be a prob on long flights and a change in our body clock to the new time zones.People need a few hours or days to get used to new time zone etc.To try and avoid the effects of jet lag(tiredness and being unable to sleep etc) try the following.....dont over eat or drink on the flight.Drink plenty of water and move around etc. This will also help stop deep vien thrombosis too.Dont smoke and wear baggy comfy clothes.Try getting abit of sleep too.Prickly heat is something I have had many times. It is a red itchy rash that appears on the skin and it very painful.I have had it when I have sunbathed too much.It is caused by persperation trapped under the skin.It normally happens to people who have just got to a hot place and body finds it hard to cope with hot weather.Try to slowly build up being in the sun and try to keep cool and talculm powder can help ease it. Sunburn is another...

Heat exhaustion and Heatstroke

by rachel_sun

Cyprus will get very hot during the summer months and it can get upto 40c or more.Getting dehydrated can causes heat exhaustionYour body looses salt when you sweat etc..If you go during summer months(June-September) remember to drink plenty of water and not to exercise or go too mad first few days of getting there.Try to to drink too much alcohol etc.You will know if you are getting heat exhaustion as you will feel tired and weak and have headaches and may feel dizzy and light headed and may get cramps.Adding salf to food will help your body regain the lost salt. Heat Stroke is also a danger. This happens when your body overheats and your bodies temp raises too high.It can kill you.The main cause is too much sun-bathing and not enough drinking of water and too much alcohol etc.You will get the following symptoms if you have it.Feeling ill, not sweating,a high body temp of around 39c to...

Food and Water

by rachel_sun

In Cyprus food is ok if it is cooked or peeled.I only eat in places that had local people eating in them and looked clean and tidy.I did eat a few salads at popular places that were busy with local and travellers and was totally ok.Just be sensible and eat from places that look busy as this is a sign that the food is safe as well as good and it has not been left standing around etc gathering germs.I drank bottled water too as the tap water tastes abit grim as it has a salty taste which I found not very nice.I just bought bottled water and I even brushed my teeth with it etc. There may be power cuts now and then and water cuts but that's all part of your hol.

Taking pics

by rachel_sun

You are ok to take photos almost anywhere in Cyprus. But you are not allowed to take pics near Attila and Green Lines and there are warning signs around to tell you not to do so.Another place to avoid are Military camps. Also such places as ports or airports are off limits taking pics.If you want to take pics in a museum, you normally need a licence to do so.Do not use a flash in churches and some churches may not allow and pics to be taken.Look for the sign of a camera with a line going through it.And whatever you do, dont ever take a pic inside a Mosque when people are praying in there. If you want to take pictures of Cypriot people it is good manners to at least smile and say"kalimera" or "merhaba".People such as priests and old ladies on donkies etc make great pics and will be ok if you ask them first and say you will send them a copy of the pic when you get it developed.Remember to...

summer heat

by anna-m

If you are visiting Cyprus for the first time, be prepared: during the summer months, it can get discustingly hot in daytime and awfully humid at night, especially by the sea. In order to make things easier, make sure to wear a hat or something, drink plenty of water or other liquid (but not alcohol, at least not in the sun!) and/or stick to the shade and air-conditioned premises, if you can.Another huge trouble in summer months are mosquitoes so take care, especially if you are allergic

Buy a Decent map!

by freya_heaven

We had hired a little Suzuki Swift for exploring the Island of Cyprus. The roads in the Troodos are not always great, sheer drops are common, especially off the beaten track. We went off on one road only to find ourselves on a boulder ridden track, with no possibility of turning round due to the shear drop!. Buy a good map for the mountains!(~_~)

TIMESHARE TOUTS.

by RobMorgan

We thought the quieter side of Cyprus, Paphos, would have been free of timeshare touts (seen loads in Tenerife), but seems they have found here too.As you get off the bus in Paphos & walk towards the old castle in the bay, they pounce on you with scratch cards, & guess what ? everybody has won !!!! so they take you then to an office to try & sell you an apartment....we sat on the seawall & watched many people being taken in by them, some even getting into taxis to be taken away.....PLEASE don`t be taken in by them, remember "THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A FREE LUNCH".

Beware of shopping in northern Nicosia

by wadekorzan

In the picture, you see a sort of market, located in the old town of northern Nicosia. Mainly there are cheap clothes here, so not anything really interesting to buy anyway. I had a great time at the market, as quite a few locals from the shops came to me and wanted to know from where I come, etc. I was even invited for a Turkish coffee which I enjoyed at a little outside cafe terrace. However, despite the fact that I enjoyed the market so much, I bought nothing at all. I had been warned that if staying in Greek Cyprus (like I was), anyone making a day trip to northern Nicosia would not be allowed to bring anything ourchased in northern Cyprus back into Southern Cyprus. The whole border control area is quite unnerving and for this reason, I would strongly recommend to be careful if you do buy anything in the north and try to take it to the outh--maybe it will be confiscated.

only drink bottled water

by madrazoman

Because there are no lakes in north cyprus, all of the water comes from the sea and is some kind of salty. Its not healthy to drink it. There are many stores (markets), almost one in every corner, where you can get not so expensive water botles for less half a dollar (500,000LT). It is good to keep some if you feel thirsty at night... You can also find cola in every market but is more expensive than other places (1 dollar for 500ml). And of course beer (Efes and Miller).
