Watch out for the cars!!!

by madrazoman

Here they use english way of driving but most of people who drives come from turkey and they are used to the other way of driving. Also most of people drive like crazy so watch to your right side first when crossing a street and dont stop in the middle because some car may come really fast to you. Car accidents is one bad thing about nort cyprus.

Passion becomes harassment!

by tagalonggal

The one surprise about Cyprus was the never-ending reminder of the political situation. It didn’t matter where we went, shopping, taxi rides, dining or just browsing the shops …we would be approached and asked to tell our government that the Cypriot people were being unfairly occupied and that the outside world must come to their aid and free their country. For the most part people simply wanted their story told and as guests in their country, we listened politely over and over. But there were a couple of occasions the men were so aggressive, following us for over 30 minutes, constantly reappearing and refusing to let us alone …I actually felt intimidated. Based on this experience, I would not return to Cyprus for a holiday where relaxation was my goal

Increasing Taxi Fares

by Maeniel

At the time of the trip, I was informed to be very careful of the taxi drivers in Cyprus. They had gained a bit of a reputation for taking travellers to their destination and then charging over the top rates. There were no meters in the taxis, so the price was worked out in the drivers head. The recommended way of getting around this was to ask how much it cost before getting into the vehicle. The driver could not then ask too much, or they wouldn't get the custom. Just be aware and careful.

Englishmen singing Karaoke

by Grootpiet

Even in the peaceful hollow of Pernera Bay, the evil Dr. Karaoke has cast his spell on unsuspecting package tourists... great to listen to for a couple of minutes from your room, but the place across from the hotel didn't close until about 4 each morning...

Water

by cheekymarieh

Although you can drink the water from the tap without any adverse effects, I wouldn't recommend it. Much of the water on the island is desalinated and doesn't have a very good taste. It does vary in taste from area to area (even within the same village) I have found - in one apartment I used bottled water to make tea and coffee whereas about 0.5km away I was quite happy to make my tea without resorting to the bottles. There are water dispensing machines around the area and the water from these is certainly drinkable. It is also cheaper than buying bottles of water. When I was living there, I used to have a delivery of drinking water every week.

George The Cockroach

by cheekymarieh

Like many warm countries, Cyprus has a number of insects and crawlies. A cockroach is a common hazard on the island. It is not an indication that a place is dirty. It is a way of life. The one in the photo is called George!!!

Heat Stroke

by cheekymarieh

Try and avoid visiting the island towards the end of July and August if you are from the UK or Northern Europe. It really will be too hot to enjoy yourself. The air is very dry and it really isn't comfortable - you can't even cool down in the sea .... unless you go about 3am in the morning. Even that is only a temporary respite from the heat.Remember that even hotel air conditioning doesn't keep you cool once you leave the room. Very few bars and restaurants have it.

That Itchy Feeling

by cheekymarieh

Beware of the local ant population. Don't leave food lying around your apartment otherwise you may subject yourself to an invasion. I kept as much as possible in the fridge and only left unopened tins and packets in cupboards. It is better to prevent them rather than have to try to obliterate them at a later date!!!
