Traffic Tickets

by cheekymarieh

If you park a hire car where you shouldn't, the traffic wardens will just stick a notice on that the number has been taken. I never had any reprecussions! It's different if you have a Cypriot registered car ... but still not too major!

Immigration Alert

by cheekymarieh

Many Cypriot employers will say that they will obtain a work permit for you - beware as many don't (Nautilus Inn, Pernera will get one and are an exception!).If you work illegally you risk deportation - they are less strict if you are from the EU - though if you are from Eastern Europe, they will send you out on the first plane.

This is Dafni, age 5 years old. Her father is my cousin. Both of us are refugees. As you can see she is smiling because of innocence. She does not know much about the Turkish troop atrocities in Cyprus. As you probably heart Cyprus suffers, since 1974 from Turkish invasion, 40% of its area is occupied and 40% of the population is displaced to the south part of Cyprus. The Greek-Cypriots are harassed at the dividing line checkpoints. please be careful when entering the northern occupied area.........as nobody can quarantee your safety.

Be careful when driving or when a pedestrian. The traffic light system in use on the island is the same as in most parts of the world but the locals use is slightly different. They tend to crawl across the line when the light shows red, some just don't bother stopping. Basically when your light turns green just proceed with caution still looking around you.As a pedestrian you have to be real careful. Crossing lights going to red does not mean that the driver will stop, just proceed with extreme caution.Just be careful:Red - proceed with caution.Amber - means nothing.Green - means drive like a nut case.Follow those pointers and you will drive like a local.

Travelers arriving in the Republic of Cyprus may enter the Republic only through the legal ports of entry: Larnaka and Pafos International Airports, or the ports of Larnaka. Lemesos and Pafos. The ports of Ammochostos (Famagusta), Keryneia and Karavostasi, as well as the airports in the part of the Republic illegally occupied by the Turkish invasion forces, have been declared by the Government as prohibited ports of entry and exit, and no passenger should enter or leave the Republic through these ports.

Keep an eye out for the ants, they are massive and will smother anything edible that is left lying about. Also, there are cockroaches here, but they are harmless although they do make you jump when you first spot them.

Many are aware of the Cypriot drivers and their love of erratic driving (an evening outside the bars in Kato Pafos is proof enough). Cross the road at your own risk. They will probably blast a horn at you, but they do that to anyone or anything. Hire cars all have red number plates, so it may give you that extra second to jump onto the kerb, if you know who is driving.

Avoid photographing anything military. If you might ever want to visit the Greek part of Cyprus at some future time, make sure your North Cyprus visa goes on a separate sheet of paper, not stamped into your passport. The Greek Cypriots will not let you in if you have a Northern stamp in your passport and (I'm told) you might even get hassled by officials if you try to enter Greece itself on a later occasion. Watch out for fast/mad drivers on the major roads! All local drivers try to overtake regardless of traffic or road conditions. By the way, on both sides of the island you drive on the LEFThand side, a legacy of British rule. This, despite the fact that in both Greece and Turkey, one drives on the righthand side of the road.
