Be careful in areas next to the so called Green Line (by which the island is separrated into Greek and Turkish zones since 1974). Crossing this line may result into you having a bullet as a new accesory. This is a common tourist mistake in the old part of the town of Nicosia.
I am not saying this is Cyprus specific, but once again a warning for females travelling alone. I was in Paphos in low season and the only female staying in the hostel. I had a bit of a scare, and in future will travel with some sort of personal alarm to scare off unwanted advances, or to attach to a closed door frame during nights. I know this was a very isolated incident, but treat this as a reminder to always be on your guard.
Do not fall asleep while warming a pizza! Here's the story. We had an appartment with a litte kitchen,and a gasoven to use for cooking. At 4 am when we came home,slightly animated,food would be good! So I turned the oven on,put the pizza in and started reading a boooring book. At this time my friend had already fallen asleep. Half a page later I lost conciousness,too. 4 hours later I woke up,blind! Well,not quite,the smoke from the burned pizza had filled the hole room. The oven was bent & twisted,the wall behind was black and the pizza was well done...I didn't tell the hotel management,but they saw when cleaning the room. I was called over the speaker system at the Larnaka Airport the day of arrival. After signing a paper which said I agreed to pay,I could get on the plane home. I never got the bill...What can I say? I'm a bad,bad boy.
If you hire a car, think carefully about the open jeeps that are available. They look great but, Cyprus is so hot, that those in the open will be quickly fried. Use loads of sunblock or have a car with aircon, it's worth the exra few pounds.This one was 4x4, useful, some of the minor roads are very rough.
Be very wary when crossing the roads, the taxi drivers think they own them.Also take great care in the sun, it can be very hot, this picture shows my niece sunbathing,after 1 hour she was burnt, so please be carefull, dont let the breeze fool you.
FIRBY WARNING******If any of you have ever heard of a Firby, then you know what I mean. Tal took one of her collection on the trip with us (as you can see in the pic). It drove us crazy. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Should be a law against these things, but kids love them for some weird reason.
Be careful while driving in Northern Cyprus.People are overtaking with lots of risk, especially on the road between Lefkosa and Famagusta.And you can hardly see them due to the shining sun...Advise: Switch on your car-lights, so that at least they can see you better!
No such place as North Cyprus.People there don't exist.Ask British goverment,they will tell you no such place.When I go there I am out of this world maybe among the stars.
Make sure if you are planning a trip to the Kykkos monastery that you are wearing appropriate clothing and not shorts or you may have come all that way for nothing!
