Some useful phrases in Czech

by tauroctonia

First of all, people will generally understand English in the tourist centres of Czech Republic, mainly in Prague; this is especially the case among the younger people. In some rural areas, however, people rather speak German than English, above all the older people. In general, it is polite to know at least some basic phrases in Czech language... - and here there are some:Dobrý den! = Hello! (formal)Ahoj! = Hello! (informal)Na shledanou! = Goodbye!Djekuki (short: dicky) = Thank youSdvolením: Excuse me!jízdenka = tickethorní nádrazi = train stationNa zdraví! = Cheers!pivo = beer

Hiking through anywhere

by Lamanai

Hiking in the Czech republic, it's a pleasure. Why? There are so many walker paths anywhere in the hills, along rivers, in the forests, AND YOU WON'T GET LOST! The routes are traced by various colors, so just keep your signs to arrive to you destination. In addition, the paths are not designed for simple startpoint-to-destination walking. There are many sites on the ways so you never get bored. Enjoy!

Palacinky

by Jimmy_Stimm

Palacinky are pancakes. But not quite as heavy as pancakes that you'd eat for breakfast. This is more of a desert, served with chocolate sauce or a fruit topping. We must have had a dozen orders of Palacinky while in Prague. They're served in any of the many coffee shops in the old town. Make sure you try some.

Pivo

by Jimmy_Stimm

I learned three Czech words while I was in town. Most (Bridge), Palacinky (Pancakes), and Pivo...Beer. Pilsner Urquell is the local beer and man is it good. And it's only about 50 cents a glass so drink up! Shortly after I returned from Prague Pilsner Urquell started to become readily available in the US. Much to my dismay this version of Pilsner is nothing like the fresh, preservative-free version I was accustomed to in Prague. The original Budweiser is also brewed in the Czech Republic and is served in Prague. The Budvar Brewery puts out a much better beer than the toilet water that Anheuser Bush sells here in the US.

Landscape

by Leipzig

Czech Republic consists of a plateau encircled by mountain chains. The country attracts with towns with historical city centres, vast forests, bizarr meander rivers, massive mountain chains and numerous castles. The jewel of the Czech Republic is surely Prague, the capital. In winter the Bohemian Forest is a good alternative to the crowded Alps. When I spent a fortnight in the German/Czech border region I found the spring of the Vltava River. I could jump of the "raging torrent". Two years before I had spent one week in Prague and saw the same river. It took me several minutes to cross the river onto a bridge.

Dinner on the Moldau River

by irvbur

Even if it is considered "touristy" we enjoy a dinner cruise on local rivers. After all, we ARE tourists. The Moldau River has canal locks and beautiful nightime vistas of the city in lights. The food was typical fare. Not so great, not so bad, but very well worth doing. Prague is a magnificently beautiful city.

by josecarlos

You must go to Wenceslaw square and drink a beer while you walk on the street... Even though I spoke a bit a german, people in Prague usually speak czeck among them. I have to confess it was quite embarassing to buy a subway ticket from a machine with a very complicate alphabet. It took me about 30 mins. to realize what the letters meant, till someone told me that such day one could travel for free because the guys who checked the tickets were out...

The greatest flood time

by LanaFromRiga

It wasn't my fondest memory. The flood impressed me. That's why I decided to tell about it .My Prague's visiting time was in the great flood time. The River Vltava became obtuse for 2 bouts. Local people said that such kind of flood wasn't there for 80 years.Streets near the River Vltava were under the water. The square in the photo looked dramatic.
