Favorite thing: Estabished 1338 as the seat of the Old Town authorites. The oldest gothic part of the complex which includes a tower and an oriel chapel is richly decorated with coats of arms.

Prague Astronomical Clock was installed in 1410. It is the third-oldest astronomical clock in the world and the oldest one still working.

Fondest memory: 'The Walk of the Apostles': a clockwork hourly show of figures of the Apostles and other moving sculptures.

You can see on pic#3 figure of Death, whish represented by a skeleton, striking the time.

    The Astronomical Clock.

Favorite thing: One of the main attraction of the old town is this clock. It is composed by an astronomical dial, representing the position of the sun and the moon in the sky; by a calendar dial; added in 1870 and by a group of 12 statues of apostles and Christ. People gather in front of this clock to watch two small windows open and Christ and the apostles coming out in a short procession.

This clock was originally installed in 1410, but various additions were made later on.

Favorite thing: of course the old town is charming ; all around you will see very modern shops like in New York City or London ; dozens of restaurants and pizzerias are also to be found in the area , and they are not cheap.
But if you walk 3 or 4 kms from the centre , you will see another Prague ,not rich and show off, which tries to get out of the communist years

  • Walking Tours

by Nazreal Written Jun 1, 2006 14 reviews

Favorite thing: I would definitely spend some time on a walking tour if you're a spare morning of afternoon going. the tour guide I went with was friendly, talkative, gave you enough time to take photos and knew so much history but didnt make it boring; I feel a lot more clued in about Prague and the area we went to.

Fondest memory: I went to Prague in February when it was -22*c and I would definitely go there at that time again- the fog and mist made the amber street light glow, effusing such a romantic soft pink in the air- I will never forget wondering around Old Town and Charles bridge at night with no crowds, getting happily lost down cobbled streets and stumbling across the cutest cafes!

INFORMATION!!! Old Town Hall Tourist Office

    Information Nerve Centre

Favorite thing: Painted pink so you can find it easier... ;-)

This is the official tourist mecca for all things Prague! By official I mean watch out for all those other 'tourist offices' preying on unsuspecting tourists and their bulging wallets!

Come here for your Prague Card, your tickets, last minute accommodation, sightseeing tours and trips, guided walks, guidebooks, maps, car rental (bad idea unless you're leaving Prague!), travel passes - Um, basically the usual stuff you'd expect to find... ;-)

This building is also the gateway to the Old Town Hall Tower, a diorama of the city and a gallery that exhibits an interesting array of temporary art installations - no matter how much you try to avoid this place you'll keep coming back here! ;-)

    Fondest memory: Tourist Information Centre

    Landmarks and spectacles . . .

Favorite thing: There are so many recognizable sights and interesting historical landmarks in Prague. If you're a fan of architecture, this is the city for you. One of the more famous and quirky sights is the Astronomical Clock located in Old Town Square that dates to 1410. Every hour crowds gather to see the mechanical figures ring bells and nod to the spectators (hard to explain- you gotta see it for yourself!).

    Astrological Clock

Favorite thing: Visit the Astrological Clock in the Old Town Square. You won't have to go out of your way to find it...

When we were there (late September) there weren't many tourists around...unlike some of the other photos I have seen on Virtual Tourist! :) We got to see a lot more of Prague because of this I think...

Old Town Hall, Old Town Square

Favorite thing: Located on the all famous Staromìstské námestí, the Old Town Hall is equally famous for its Old Astronomical Clock. This building is the center of the Old Town, and the starting point of the Royal Way to Prague Castle through Charles Bridge.

    The clocks

    The Clocks

Favorite thing: Prague, as I already said, is one of my favourite cities in the world. It's beautiful, it's charming, it's enchanting, it's friendly, it's fun, it's interesting, it's romantic, it's just about everything you want it to be!

Fondest memory: The clocks on the Old Town Main Square are a beautiful work of art. Every single person who has gone to Prague has seen it, because you just cannot miss it: every hour, when the clocks announce 0 minutes and the little figures come out, a humongous crowd stands in front of them all staring at it.

As I had to walk in front of it every single day, after feeling quite annoyed at the standing tourists blocking my way, I ended up enjoying and laughing at these crowds, all in the same position, all staring at the same thing, all together. So I would not look at the clocks anymore, but instead at the... sheeps?
