by sue_stone If you find yourself near the Loreto around lunch time pop into the bright, friendly ArtCafe for a snack. We had eaten so much since we had been in Prague so we just needed a lightish lunch to tide us over and came across this small café.
They sell a range of very delicious baguettes, which we had and washed them down with a beer. When we were leaving we noticed that they sold tasty looking ice cream…so we ordered a couple of scoops to take away and enjoyed it as we walked through the park on the way to Petrin Hill. Cheers by sue_stone People in the know will probably cringe when they read we had dinner at U Rotta. I think it is a bit of a tourist trap…apparently there is a 'folklore show' every evening…except the evening we were there. We decided on U Rotta as we just wanted to eat something….in a basement….and there were dumplings. Located on the triangular Male Namesti, the entrance to the restaurant is strangely via a Crystal Shop. Walk through the shop and then down the stairs into the Gothic cellars below.
Don't bother eating one of the (very stale) pretzels that are hanging on a stand on the large wooden tables. Do however, order a beer. The food was expensive, but at least it was tasty. I had roast chicken served with red cabbage and dumplings and washed it down with more beer. Located in the beautiful Ungelt (aka Tyn Courtyard), just off the Old Town Square, Ebel Coffee Shop is a fabulous place for breakfast or a snack. We had two breakfasts here and would highly recommend it. Nothing too fancy, this small café is clean and comfortable and has service with a smile.
They are know for their coffee, which is very drinkable, and is served in huge mugs (a little too milky for my liking…but surprisingly good anyway). We had their delicious bagels with cream cheese and assorted jams and coffee. They also do some breakfast specials which include coffee, bagel or croissant and juice or yogurt which are good value. If it is a nice day you can sit in the sunny courtyard and enjoy your coffee whilst planning your days activities. I kept reading great things about Klub Architektu in various Prague travel guides so we were keen to check it out. Although I had also read that bookings were essential we decided to try our luck for dinner one night when we were in the area. We were unsuccessful…they were fully booked. So we decided to return for a late lunch on our last day…no booking, but they managed to squeeze us in. Klub Architektu is located on Namesti Betlemske. Right near Bethlehem Chapel there is a small courtyard where you will find stairs that lead down to this subterranean restaurant. Located in a series of vaulted cellars, it is dark and moody and the perfect place to sample some traditional Czech cuisine.
We ordered a beer to start and decided what stodgy delights to enjoy for our last meal in Prague. Alex opted for one of the house specialities, the Pork & Vegetable stew and I had some lamb with, most importantly, lots of dumplings! This is not the cheapest place to eat, but the food was tasty and the atmosphere was fabulous. We arrived in Prague late one evening and were starving…the food on the plane had been particularly bad. We dumped our bags in our apartment and took a stroll down to the Old Town Square in search of some food. Although it was close to midnight, the Square was packed with people enjoying the mild spring evening. We decided to brave a possibly over-priced meal, and pulled up a chair at one of the large restaurants on the square that had a free table, Restaurace U Orloje. We quickly ordered a couple of Pilsners….wanting to get into the swing of our Prague weekend. Yum. It was cold and tasty.
For supper we just wanted something safe and easy, so we both had schnitzel and potato. Nothing amazing, but entirely edible and prefect with the beer. Although U Orloje is one of those touristy kind of places, we very much enjoyed sitting outside in the Square people watching and getting our first taste of that fabulous Old Town atmosphere. On the night that we had been unsuccessful in getting a table at Klub Architektu we opted instead for Restaurace u Plebana, located across Betlemske Namesti. We were pleasantly surprised by U Plebana. It was a cosy and friendly place that serves up big plates of Czech food. There was a very talented piano man who really added to the atmosphere and made it a romantic meal.
Dinner consisted of a huge serve of meat, cabbage and dumplings for Alex, and I was a little more boring with lamb and potatoes. We even decided to live on the edge and ordered a bottle of Czech wine. It was fine….nothing to write home about, but a good accompaniment to our meals. All in all an enjoyable evening. Alan (foreground) and myself in Klub architektù by palin2004 This was the first restaurant I visitied in Prague and have returned many times, the staff are great the food is simple but very enjoyable and the prices are very good. It's one of these restaurants that you can guarentee will meet with your expectations, for this reason it can be busy so either phone in and make a booking or be prepared to wait for a table to become free. The interior (bottom floor) by rsilva This nice little restaurant is located in the Malé Straně (Lesser town) quarter. It is very close to the end of Charles Bridge. We liked it so much we went there twice in 3 days. It is very small with only a few tables on the first floor and a really nice cave with some more downstairs. It is a bit tourist-oriented, but in a good way. We were a bit put off by a multi-language menu, but decided to give it a try and I'm happy we did. The service is very good, the waiters are very polite although I always got the impression they were not happy to work there... The owner, an older lady, is often there and will go around the tables making sure everything is alright (without being intrusive, however) and if you are interested, she will give you some history on the restaurant. Apparently, there was a tunnel between the restaurant and the church, located quite some way from it and it was used during the war. The food ranged from good to excellent and I particularly recommend the "Roast saddle of boar on briar sauce" or the "Fillet of pork with leeks and bacon baked on lard". The "Roast duck breast marinated in fresh ginger" as good but I have had better. Well, if you have not had enough, the "chocolate ice-cream in a blueberry cream, decorated with fresh mint" is exquisite. There is also a very good beer, but I cannot remember the name. If you ask for just a beer, you will get this one. It is definetly not one of the more famous ones (Budvar, Gambrinus, etc). It is a bit expensive for Czech standards (about 20 Eur per person), so that is probably why you will see mainly tourists.

This may well be Heaven... by RockTadgers Well, stone me! Is this an illusion I see before me? An authentic(ish) Czech beerhall will local(ish) prices, right in the very heart of Prague? No, this mirage turns out to be solid, and is one of the most pleasing places to while away a few hours in central Prague. Just off Narodni opposite Tescos, "At the Little Bears" is a large, friendly, chatty beerhall where unusually friendly (for a Czech place) waiters keep bringing you big jugs of Budvar until you need a fresh slip of paper on your table. A little overlit but thankfully devoid of all the cod-Bohemian tat and paraphrenalia of some of the tourist-oriented beer halls, it's as good a place as any to spend a winter's afternoon and maybe make some friends. Food's on aswell, and is generally better than the dishes of questionable contents you might expect to find in a real local's local. Nine thumbs up (losing one for not being open till the early hours)
Budvar - perfectly served, perfect temperature, perfect big frothy head. One of the best beers you'll drink in Prague. We were a group of 4 and what I remember best about this restaurant is that we all ate until we dropped, enjoyed everything and paid a very reasonable price. The restaurant is very nice and we even had our own "private" waiter that was always around the corner waiting for our requests. I don't know if this was due to the relatively few people that were there (I can't remember if we arrived for a late lunch or early dinner), in any case, we got the service you would only get at a luxury restaurant back home. The food was all great, one of us had an onion soup served in bowl made of a carved piece of bread. I had some very nice meat, but I can't remember what it was. At the time, they did not have English menues and the waiter was not exactly fluent in any language I could understand. This led to my girlfriend eating frog legs when he had said they were Artichokes... In any case, we had a lot of fun.
