  • Chez Marcel: A Break from Eastern European

OK, so we love French food - to the point where we seek it out even when we're not in France. Near the Old Town Square, you'll find Chez Marcel, which offers up brasserie style cuisine in the most classic French style. Prices are pretty reasonable, and the atmosphere is casual. During our week, we ended up here twice, and enjoyed it thoroughly both times. Classic preparations of duck (magret and confit), rabbit, beef, etc. are guaranteed to satisfy. The fois gras is also very authentic. My personal favorite was the rabbit and mustard sauce (which I've been trying to replicate at home ever since). Good, though not great wine list complements the full experience. Well worth the short walk from the tourist-oriented Old Town Square area.

I stumbled across this place after my visit of St. Agnes convent. I was tired and hungry and went in - and was pleasantly surprised by the charming Bistro style ambience. Like in Paris! I found out later, however, that food was overpriced and service poor.

Favorite Dish: I had baked goat cheese with a green salad, which was quite good. The white house wine was ok. Creme brulee was a huge disappointment - and that in a French Bistro! Jeeez! An espresso finished the lunch, the bill came to 410 CZK.

Chez Marcel: France in the centre of Prague

A typical French bistro in the centre of Prague, the waiters are very friendly and helpful and the atmosphere out of this world.

Favorite Dish: Everything. We eat here 3 or 4 times during our stay and worked our way through the menu.

Chez Marcel - A great bistro in Prague

This is a great place to wind down with a glass of wine or beer after a long day of sightseeing. The "table wine" was good (red) and very cheap.

We liked it so much, we ended up here 3 times during our week long stay in Prague.

Favorite Dish: The frites were excellent! But, don't try to go there late in the evening and have them. We did that one night (around 11pm) and were disappointed as they had already closed the kitchen and gave us old fries! Had we known, we wouldn't have ordered them.

    Other great dishes...

    quiche
Pear, walnut, and gorgonzola salad (yummy!)
Filet steak w/ various types of sauce

You can get away with being very cheap here if you like, we went all out and ordered many things (including some or the more expensive entrees) and it was still only around $30US for both of us including wine, beer, salad, entree, dessert, etc. Great value for good food.

    Chez Marcel-Jewish Quarter

There are a few of these restaurants in Prague in different areas. They have French decor and the staff is very helpful. They are bright and airy inside and the food is great.
