Kavarna Slavia: Coffe & Cake
This cafe has been a favourite haunt of the city's writers, actors & dissidents since the days of the First Republic & the walls are adorned with famous peoples pictures who frequented the cafe.
We popped in here after the theatre for a cocktail, although we were not all that impressed with the service as the waiters were unfriendly.
On a previous occassion I have had some wonderful cake here & the commom czech tea with rum. There is a chap tinkering on the piano in the background
Favorite Dish: cheesecake
Kavarna Slavia: Get a Window Seat
With its corner location and huge windows overlooking, respectively the National Theatre and the most Legii bridge with Petrin Hill in the background, this makes for an ideal cafe to sit and watch the world go by.
The cafe itself is a modern resurrection of one of Prague's "Grand Cafes" with its spacious, naturally-lit dining room and bow-tied but informal service. On my one visit the clientele comprised a mix of locals and tourists, the locals ranging from the besuited business lunch crew to ladies who lunch with a few shoppers thrown in to keep the balance right.
As can be expected the window tables are constantly occupied and so it is very much a case of getting your timing right, though of course you can just take any table and pounce as soon as a window one becomes available!
Favorite Dish: The menu offers light lunch options such as sandwiches and salads and also caters for the more robust appetites with its small selection of local specialities such as Braised Duck or Goulash with, of course, the famous dumplings!
Looking for a light lunch before going up Petrin Hill I opted for the "Salty Pancakes" - two savoury crepes (not salty at all) with spinach, bacon, Niva and Edam cheeses and a touch of cream. This was a perfect light lunch with excellent service in a pleasantly buzzy environment and the aforementioned window views completing the experience.
My lunch bill, including 2 beers, was less than 300 KCz which was excellent value for money!
Just as a little aside: this was one of the few Prague restaurants with a small vegetarian section on the menu.

Kavarna Slavia Cafe: A great people watching spot
Kavarna Slavia is a Prague institution. While these days you are more likely to find it filled with tourists than intellectuals, it is still a landmark that you should really try at least once.
Its location is unbeatable as it is next door to the National Theatre, providing unobstructed views of the castle and Charles Bridge. Its interior is roomy and elegant, with brisk and efficient service. Go in sometime before catching a ballet at the National Theatre and sit down for a latte and a delicous piece of cake and soak up the atmosphere and the view!
In the evenings you can find yourself enjoying a drink while listening to live piano playing in the background.
Favorite Dish: We visited Kavarna Slavia twice. The first time we had breakfast before starting our walk around town and enjoyed grilled wine sausages with homemade potato salad, over a cup of latte. The second time we returned for a few late night drinks, after a stroll along the river. It is definitely worth the visit.

Kavarna Slavia: Most famous of Prague's old cafes
The Slavia is the most famous of Prague's old Cafes, a cherrywood and onyx shrine to Art Deco elegance, with polished limestone-topped tables and big windows overlooking the river. With the Narodni divadlo(National Theatre)across the street, it has been a celebrated literary meeting place since the 1920's, though these days there are more tourists than theatre people.
Favorite Dish: The menu ranges from wicked cream cakes to fresh salads, pastas and vegetarian dishes.
KAVARNA SLAVIA: The first Praha food impression
A crowded but trendy cafe in Praha. In front of National Theather. The staff was very friendly
The meals was good.
Favorite Dish: I tried goulash with potatoes cooked in the traditional form, I dont remember the name.
