U Modre Kachnicky: resting on its reputation...

by marktynernyc Updated Apr 4, 2011

Reviews had praised this place for exceptional Czech cuisine - I found the meal, in retrospect to be mediocre. They have two locations - one in Stare Mest and one in the Mala Strana.

Favorite Dish: The first glass of bohemia sekt was flat. The duck liver in red wine sauce was over cooked and tasted like chicken liver. The fallow deer was okay - but once again, in retrospect, I had much better quality and preparation at other restaurants. I would not recommend this restaurant. I may try the one in Stare Mesto next time I’m in Prague but for lunch, not dinner.

U Modre Kachnicky (the Original): 1st Class Food and Service

Very high class service and food: if you have a special occasion don't miss this place. Only flaw (not depending on them): don't match with Czech wines!
Better reserve even choosing the appropriate room and table.
    Price without wine!

Favorite Dish: Wild game pâté with cranberry sauce, Smoked duck breast with plum sauce, Terrine de foie gras with Port and wild fruit dip, Grilled goose liver with grapes and rosemary, Wild game and mushroom ragout in pastry as appetizers, Venison leg in cream sauce with cranberries and Karlovy Vary dumplings, Wild game goulash as main courses.

U Modre Kachnicky is a beautiful, romantic restaurant filled with old world charm and located on a quiet old town street. We had a 3-course dinner included in our hotel package and we were so delighted to find out that the dinner was in this restaurant. We got to choose from 5 different set menu alternatives, which all sounded good.

The starters were delicious and my potato and mushroom soup came traditionally in a bowl made of bread. My mum had duck and venison patees, which according to her were very tasty. For main course I had duck, very juicy and tender and came with tasty side dishes and was beautifully presented. Mum had deer and liked it very much too. As a dessert I had an apple/cottage cheese strudel and mum had plum dumplings. Couln't fault them either and they were great because they weren't overly sweet.

With 2 glasses of sparkling wine, 2 big glasses of Czech white wine and a bottle of water, our bill was 610 crowns. The total bill would have been 2110 crowns, the set menus costing 750 each. Not bad for such a fantastic meal in such a beautiful surroundings. Ok, I know it was expensive by Prague standards, but not otherwise. Definitely worth every crown.

U Modre Kachnicky: The most romantic spot in town

For a special occassion, aniversary or romantic dinner, there is no other place to offer the atmosphere and surroundings of U Modre Kachnicky (At The Blue Duckling). It is located in the picturesque Mala Strana district on Nebovidska street. Its guests have included political celebrities like Czech president Vaclav Havel, German Chancellor Kohl, singer Phil Collins, actors Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Jean Claude van Damme, Pierre Brice, writer Arthur Miller and many others.
Its amazingly beautiful interior includes antique furniture, hand painted wall paper and a great number of other antique objects, both functional and decorative. The restaurant is situated on two floors and includes several smaller rooms.
There is also a second U Modre Kachnicky, located at Michalska 16, near the Old Town Square.

Favorite Dish: The restaurant offers a great number of duck and game specialities, including many Czech and some international dishes. Unfortunately I lost my notes of the dishes we enjoyed in the place, but I remember that the venison was excellent. A very extensive wine list is also available.

A romantic place for a meal for 2.

Favorite Dish: We enjoyed the venison and the pheasant. A good wine was recommended costing around 400kc and served in gorgeous glasses. The apple strudel was fragrant and spiced – better than any we had in Salzburg.

U Modre Kachnicky: Classy & Czech Cusine

see waht I mean about rooms here!

At The Blue Duckling, to give it its english translation, is a classy restaurant with prices to match but well worth it for special occasions. Reservation is recommended and I would suggest visiting to pick your table too. This may sound strange but the series of cosy rooms are so uniquely decorated in art nouveau style that it adds to the ambience of dining here.

Note this is the Blue Duckling in Mala Strana -they also have a sister restaurant of the same name in the old town with similar, slightly cheaper menu.

The service is top notch, some may feel a bit too much - even if your glass is half empty the waiter will notice and refill it for you from your carafe of water or wine etc...

Favorite Dish: The fare is czech rich game based but very chic with its presentation. I had Venison ragout in a puff pastry case for starters and Pheasant in plum brandy sauce for the main course (Dave had leg of fallow deer in black sauce) and cake for dessert.

yummy dessert at the Blue Duckliing

We tried the other classy czech restaurant the Blue Duckling in the old town of Prague. Again we were not disappointed with either the service or cusine. I had really tasty boar steaks in wild forest mushroonm sauce - in fact I enjoyed it so much I forgot to take a pic - doh! However I remembered when it came to dessert - griddle cakes with hot raspberries and ice-cream - one of the nicest I had in Prague and a great end to our last evening meal here.

    'At the blue little duck'

My personal favorite, due to its cozy rooms, the 'old castle'/'bohemian' atmosphere and the romantic interior is restaurant 'U Modre kachnicky', 'At the small, blue duck'. The three different rooms are well decorated and each has a different art nouveau mural. Only flesh and fowl are served. And they do this extremely well (both the cooking and the serving).

U Modre Kachnicky (At the Blue Duckling)
This restaurant is very special. It has truly gourmet food, great service and a very, very beautiful interior. It does not even look like a restaurant inside, you more get the feeling of being inside some rich person's mansion in the 1700s. Beware, though, that prices follow quality. Being Prague, you don't walk away stripped of half a year's salary, but it's not cheap. This is a place I take all Prague guests at least once.

Favorite Dish: Duck and game food. Especially duck!
