U Zlateho Tygra: This place is a legend
A legendary beer pub serving Pilsner Urquell and a limited choice of food. The long rooms are rather austere, a few figures of a tiger placedaround the rooms remind of the pub’s name. What draws attention is a framed photo of Bill Clinton, together with Vaclav Havel and Bohumil Hrabal taken when they were having a beer here one day during Clinton’s 1994 visit to Prague. Bohumil Hrabal, the famous Czech novelist, who used to frequent the pub is honored individually, his bust being displayed centrally on the wall. The pub is still popular among various Czech celebrities who often come here with friends.
The rooms are equipped with two rows of tables joined together, with benches at the wall and chairs on the other side. You shouldn’t expect a separate table for yourself and your group, you’ll be lucky if you find a free seat, usually next to a total stranger, but that’s exactly what the pub is all about: meeting people, drinking beer in good company and talking.
‘U Zlateho Tygra’ has a few rules: spirits are not served here, water and soft drinks are looked down upon, beer rules and waiters are Gods; they move around the pub with an air of authority but will shoot with wry humour when situation calls for it. When a girl at the next table asked for a glass of water the waited replied shortly: ‘This is not a kindergarten, we serve beer here.’ There’s no arguing... (continued)
U Zlateho Tygra: This place is a legend
... (continued) When you get your first beer you also get a small piece of paper where the waiter will mark all things you order. A beer is marked as a single vertical line. When you’re ready to leave the waiter will calculate your bill counting the lines. And there’s one more rule to remember. The waiters are always on the lookout for empty beer mugs. The moment you finish your beer another mug lands with a splash in front of you so if you think you’ve had enough it’s safer to signal it to the waiter before you have the last sip.
I noticed that the waiters are generally less grumpy towards women; we were shown to free seats by a waiter with a pen behind his ear. When I ordered a small beer he repeated my words incredulously but didn't comment, only grimaced. On the other hand, a Czech (male) sitting next to us almost had his ears boxed for not placing the mug on a cardboard pad (whatever you call it). Well, this roughness adds colour to the place.
Favorite Dish: Anyway, as far as women are concerned, I found a great article about the pub on the Internet, which quotes the following story:
‘Up to the Second World War … any feminists coming to the Golden Tiger must have been terribly offended. Women were simply not allowed inside. They were handed a program for the closest cinema, and even some change for a ticket, and told to pick their husbands up on their way back. But those old traditions were broken by a woman called Lady Helenka, as Karel Hulata [the pub’s owner] explains.
"She came here with her fiance Vaclav Prymek, who was an officer and an army pilot. When Lady Helenka was stopped at the door, she promised to keep track with her fiance, who was a respected beer drinker. And when the waiter counted the lines on the bill, there were 44 of them. Lady Helenka managed 22 beers that evening, as did her future husband. The waiter laid a white napkin in front of Helenka on the floor, kneeled down and said, madam, this seat by the counter will always be yours, even if the Egyptian king Faruk comes in."’ – end of quote. U Zlateho Tygra (At the Golden Tiger): Authentic Czech pub atmosphere!
This is a really authentic pub in the very centre of Prague that you shouldn't miss for sure. It works everyday from 3:00 p.m till 11:00 p.m and offers an unique experience starting with the two old waiters who are drinking beer all the time and marking your orders of beers/dishes with lines on a sheet of paper put on your table. The only problem with this pub is that usually it's impossible to find free table/seats since it's famous, the food is delicious and with very affordable prices and people are forming a queue in front of the pub every day even before the opening time. Once you get inside and fortunately find a seat you are immediately served a mug of draught Pilsner Urquell. By the way, you get a new mug every time you finish yours so be careful and tell the waiter "stop" when he's picking your empty mug from the table (of course not before having several great Czech draught beers). The food menu list is not very long, but contains very reasonably priced traditional Czech dishes (my favourite among them is the pork fillet with Roquefort cheese with the price of 129 Kc or around 5 EUR), the draught Pilsner Urquell is 39 Kc (1,5 EUR). There are tigers everywhere - one is hanging from the ceiling, there is one mounted at the draught beer installation, there are several drawings with tigers on the walls. Bill Clinton also visited this pub during his visit in Prague and there is a photo of him hanging on one of the walls of the venue. I really enjoyed my visit in "U Zlateho Tygra" and I will for sure return there next time I am in Prague.
