The Charles Bridge is justifibly one of the leading landmarks of Prague. The bridge, built in the 14th century spans the Vltava River. The Charles Bridge is 610m long. Architecturally there are several notable features. They include medieval towers at both ends of the bridge and the numerous statues that flank the pedestrian walkway across the length of the bridge. These statues were mostly created during the 18th century and are baroque in design. Most of the statues are saints designed to represent ecclesiastical orders. Sadly most of the statues are not the originals but copies. The originals in Vysehard. The Charles Bridge can be a rather frustrating place. Nowhere else in Prague will you feel the press of the crowd as you will here at midday. Besides the tourists there are many buskers and other artists. I should also add there are also suppose to be alot of pickpockets too, so watchout. To visit the Charles Bridge at more peaseful times, you should go early in the morning or at sunset. Fortunately, I was able to do the former as I stayed only two blocks away. Leave a Comment Directions: Connectiong Old Town and Lesser Town

Always here by kris-t King Charles IV's favourite architect and builder, Peter Parler, originally built the present day bridge. The initial idea was to build a functional construction for knight tournaments, and for many years the only decoration on the bridge was a simple crucifix. Later, the Catholic desire for ornamentation resulted in 30 statues being built (1600-1800 AD). Today, most of the statues are copies as various floods and catastrophes over the centuries have damaged the originals. There are now 75 statues, and perhaps the most interesting, as well as the oldest, is that of John of Nepomuk (8th from the right as you cross towards Prague Castle). There are towers at both ends of the bridge - the Old Town Bridge Tower on the Old Town side and the Lesser Town Bridge Towers on the Mala Strana side Leave a Comment Directions: Prague 1

Charles Bridge from the banks of the Vltava by zrim Yes, the Charles Bridge is congested. Yes, everyone on the bridge is out to separate you from your money (whether legally or otherwise). Yes, the Charles Bridge has been photographed by each and every one of Prague's several million annual visitors. But there is something about the bridge that is inherently fun. I crossed the Vltava River via the Charles Bridge at least eight times during my short stay in Prague. I found it isolated at 6:00 a.m. and I found it capable of holding thousands at 6:00 p.m. And at night it is the perfect vantage point to take in the lights of Prague. There is no right or wrong time to stroll across the Charles Bridge--just do it whenever your heart tells you to. Leave a Comment Directions: Connectiong Old Town and Lesser Town

Charles Bridge from the Little Quarter Tower by easyoar Probably the best "aerial" view you can get of Charles Bridge is from the Little Quarter Bridge Tower. This is on the Little Quarter side of the river and is just as you start to go on to Charles Bridge. It has opening hours and a fee to pay, but I don't remember it as expensive. From there to get to see the full hustle and bustle on the bridge and from relative anonymonity as very few people look up. The Tower also has a museum (of sorts) inside, although there was nothing I remember that was outstanding in the displays. The only real reason to go up is for the views. The other thing worth mentioning is that there are a good number of steps. Leave a Comment Directions: Connectiong Old Town and Lesser Town

Charles bridge by catkin The most famous of all the bridges across the Vltava, Charles Bridge dates back to medieval times and is flanked by statues of many saints and even a bored Turk. Along the cobbles of the bridge, you will find artists selling their wares, tourists by the score and wily thieves trying to take a sly dip into your pocket or bag The views from the top of the tower are spectacular. Ahhh...the Charles Bridge. I have spent some interesting times on that bridge. I've bought water colors on it, eaten ice cream on it, watched the sun both rise and set on it...Despite the hype, it really is a magical place. Named after the Emperor Charles IV in 19th century the Charles Bridge is Prague's most familiar monument. Designed by Petr Parler, it was completed in 1400 and it connects the Lesser Town with the Old Town. Although it is now pedestrianised, it withstood wheeled traffic for 600 years. There are thirty statues on the bridge, many of them have been replaced with copies. Originals are kept in the Lapidarium of the National Museum and at Vyšehrad. The magnificent Gothic Old Town Bridge Tower was designed by Petr Parler and built at the end of the 14th century. It is considered the finest Gothic tower in central Europe, mainly for its decoration. Leave a Comment Directions: Connectiong Old Town and Lesser Town

Charles Bridge by mightywease Commissioned by Charles IV to replace the earlier Judith Bridge the Charles Bridge was, until 1741, the only crossing over the Vltava. The bridge links Stare Mesto and Mala Strana and on a trip to Prague you'll probably find yourself strolling accros it on much more than one occassion. The bridge itself is a beautiful piece of architecture and engineering, lined with statues (get yourself a good guide book which lists the sculptures) and punctuated on either end with towers. The views from the towers, along the bridge and over Stare Mesto at one end and Mala Strana at the other, are wonderful. Indeed you won't be stuck for photo opportunities. The bridge itself and the views over the Vltava towards Petrin Hill and the Castle will have you reaching for your camera. During the day the bridge can get very crowded with a mix of tourists, buskers and stalls selling a variety of souveniers. At night it is just magical. Lit by street lamps, the statues dark silhouettes against the sky, the lights of Prague illuminating the buildings and reflected in the river it can feel almost un-real. As if you have stepped back in time to the late 19th early 20th Century. Leave a Comment Directions: Connectiong Old Town and Lesser Town

Lesser-Town Bridge Towers by shivan This is the gateway as seen from the bridge. Of the two towers, the lower one is in Romanesque style and dates from the 12th century. It is a remnant of the older Judith Bridge. The higher tower is 200 years younger and was erected in the 15th century. This give a strange feeling. The monument appears irregular, but it was because I was actually seeing two monuments in one, and feeling again the lovely, chilling wind, too. This bridge is Prague's most familiar monument. On it are various statues and religious motifs, worn with age. Craft stalls and vendors of all kinds make it a lively meeting place, great for people-watching! Excellent views of the river, the city and the castle. I liked to walk it early in the morning. The air was crisp and clear and the bridge was not yet crammed with people. Leave a Comment
