Charles Sqaure is located in Prague New Town. It was founded in the 14th century and was originally called “The Big Marketplace” (Forum Magnum).
It's the largest square in Prague.
There is a legend that there used to be a big marble stone with a cross, a dead man's head and a date 1627. It marked a place where clerics and aristocrats were secretly executed in the night for contriving a conspiracy against the emperor...
The Charles Square was modified as a park in 1876. Very interesting buildings, - the New Town City Hall, the Faust House or the Church of St. Igtnatius of Loyola built for the Jesuits in 1667, - surround the square.
The church of St. Ignatius of Loyola is worth a visit for interior decor. Also you can enter the chapel to see the silver-plated 17th century statue of St. Václav.
However, do not visit the park at night.
The first picture ever I took in Prague juz cuz this is my first sight of the city and (again) where I got lost.
The long very green park in Karlovo Namesti in front of the New Town Hall is the Charles Square which is considered to be one of the world's biggest square.
You can just rest at one of the park's benches, it's relaxing. It is also a transportation central as there are tram stops around it as well as Metro station.
The St. Ignace Church is on the premise.
If you visit the church of St Cyril and Methodius where the National Memorial to the Heroes of Heydrich Terror is situated, then pop up the road and visit this square, which is more like a park really. It is the largest square in Prague.
Charles Square (Karlovo Namesti) is deep within New Town, south of the National Theater. It wouldn't call it must see, but a quick walk around isn't bad. It's the site of the New Town Hall.
Nearby is the Slavonic Ministry which is an example of a modernist looking church.
Houses the New town hall built aroudn a 14th century tower. The square also borders the 17th cnetury St Ignatius Church
