When you are looking at the profile of the cathedral from the little square, make sure you check out the Gothic Vaulting in the Golden Portal. The Golden portal used to be the main entrance into the cathedral until the 19th Century. It’s easy to identify by the 3 archways side by side on the wall of the building. If you have already been inside the cathedral, the Golden Portal is more or less where the Chapel of St Wenceslas.
Once you get to the 3 arches, look up. You will see this very intricate vaulting with these 6 very delicate ribs. This is supposed to show the skills of the architect (Peter Parler) off to full extent.

They call it "the largest coherent castle complex in the world." with an area of almost 70,000 m².
There are two types of admission tickets, the "long visit" and the "short visit". I took the short visit, so I missed out on the Powder Tower, the Picture Gallery and a permanent exhibition called "The Story of Prague Castle".
Second photo: Looking up at the castle and cathedral, with the river and Charles Bridge in the foreground.

The main gates to this first courtyard have these statues from 1767. In fact in 1984 President Havel wanted the outfits worn by these fighting titons changed now that the communist era had gone and hired the costume designer from the film Amadeus to fit them out in new outfits!
Changing of the guard is hourly but at noon its longer and more impressive.

Just like Buda Castle, Prague Castle has much to offer to tourists and visitors. You can spend easily half a day here and even a full day can be spent if you decide visiting everything available. The long tour can be done by obtaining Ticket A which covers Old Royal Palace (closed from March 31 till April 30), permanent exhibition "The Story of Prague Castle", St. George's Basilica, Convent of St. George - National Gallery (closed till May 6), Golden Lane with Daliborka Tower, Prague Castle Picture Gallery, Powder Tower. The ticket costs 350 CZK and is valid for 2 days. If you would like to have a brief tour rather than the long one, then you should take Ticket B which costs 250 CZK and gives you access to Old Royal Palace, permanent exhibition "The Story of Prague Castle", St. George's Basilica, Golden Lane with Daliborka Tower. This ticket is also valid for 2 days so you don't need to rush for seeing everything.

This is the main entrance of the castle, and you will have to pass by the 2 guards, who are on duty, day and night.
Have a look for the great sculptures on top of the gate and the great ornaments in the fence.
The buildings you see on my pic are part of the administration and may not be visited.
But this is the main entrance, when you want to visit the castle !

This is the palace that was used for Princesses and later Czech kings. The hall was large, bare and don't forget to look up. There is a terrace which was closed for us and a chapel. The underground cellar has a history of the castle with some but not all the exhibits in English. There was a children's section here which attempts to capture younger minds with a trasure trail through the exhibits but to be honest it was that confusing and would take that long that it wasn't worth pursuing. Indeed we were told off for trying to have a go ourselves as it was "for children only" which was quite crazy as there was only one child there, our daughter. You also need a ticket for this again not worth the extra price, the palace itself is nice.

Even though it is the Czech capital's number one attraction. U don't actually need to pay to get into the castle. To walk around the grounds, even into St Vitus Cathedral is free, it is a very nice cathedral. Try not to miss the changing of guard whcih takes place on the hour, and the guards are walking from one place to one place, very interesting to walk along with them.

Prague is said to be the biggest Medieval Castle complex in Europe. It stands proudly overlooking Prague and is the most popular tourist attraction in Prague.
Its also very unique as its got St Vitus Cathedral as part of the complex, which is one of the most recognisable landmarks in the city.
The castle is the seat of the President of the Czech Republic and there is a changing of the guard ceremony on the hour.
The views from the Castle over Prague are really stunning, so well worth the visit.

This is the entrance I used to get into the chapel.
Have a look at the great golden ornaments and decorations on the walls.
It is a pity this part of the castle is normally not open to the public.
There were also working-materials at some places, so maybe it will be re-opened for visitors again one day !
