 | Prague Pickpockets Reviews | Tips 31 - 40 of 135 | | First of all I would like to say that Prague is SAFE place. Only thing is that a lot of people are trying to make money by cheating. Taxi drivers - Never take TAXI standing at main turistic places! Trainstations, Old Town Sq...they are waiting for you to charge you more. Ask for price first. Use some companies like AAA tel: 14014, City taxi tel: 257257257 Approx prices...from Airport...cca 600czk to city centre from Main Train St (Hlavni Nadrazi)...cca 200czk...its really close to city center from Holesovice train station...cca 350czk to city centre All mentioned prices are approx all depends on traffic and where you go in the center but differences from mentioned prices would be 10th of Crowns, NOT hundreds! Money exchange - never change money in the street, youll get fake or different country money with no value! Use banks or exchange offices and ask for final value you get! Again avoid offices at the trainstations, airport... Pickpockets - Just watch your pockets, mainly in crowdy places, trams, metro...do not hang your cameras, jackets over chair in outside restaurants. Otherwise its peaceful and safe city!!!!!!!! |

The handbag snatching happened at the Praha Holesovice train station at about 10:30 am, on May 22 2006. I was travelling with my family (from Vancouver, Canada) and we ran into an elderly American couple from New York at the station. Coincidently, we were all heading to Vienna on the same train. We all boarded the same first class car at the front of the train but they wanted a bit of privacy and took their own compartment next door. The train was uncrowded. As we waited for the train to leave, we heard some shouts next door. Apparently, the husband went to use the washroom leaving his wife alone, and along came a man who sat down beside her and asked "Is this second class?" When she said no, he got up, grabbed her handbag as well as his bag and ran out. He tossed her handbag to an awaiting accomplice at the train car door, and were both last seen running along the train track lines. The police were of little use since their english was very poor and they seemed understaffed. These thieves worked in pairs, and dressed casually but not poorly, and their plan was obviously well thought out. We weren't chosen because there were four of us - and my brother and his girlfriend are RCMP officers so they were in great physical shape. So, my tip to you is always keep an eye on your luggage on and off the train at the train station. Other Contact: Located at Partyzanska, Prague 7 |

Despite the warnings given by members of VT, I went to Prague with an open mind about the level of crime - I mean, it can be a problem in most cities, but if you show caution until you are familiar with your surroundings you don't normally suffer. In my 48 years of extensive travelling, I have only ever had my wallet taken once (in London) and that memory stays with you for some time - and teaches you a lesson. In my five days in Prague there were two clear attempts to steal my wallet - maybe others that I was not aware of - and observed two attempts on other visitors. For me that highlights a serious problem!! The main "hotspots" or high risk areas I discovered to be at the entrance to Charles Bridge (from the Old Town side), and on the Metro during rushhour. In order to cross from the Old Town area onto Charles Bridge you normally have to wait for the traffic lights to change. You can get up to 200 people waiting either side of the road jostling for position when the lights change. The pickpockets move amongst the tourists and use the jostling of the group as a shield to their activities. The pickpocket we saw caught at this site seemed to be an innoffensive sweet old lady - appearances are deceptive. On the Metro avoid overcrowded carriages. The ploy here is that when the train moves off with a jolt the pickpockets push the passengers. Whilst you are tring to regain your balance they go through your bags or pockets. Most pickpockets seem to operate in pairs or groups. Security or policing is not heavy in these areas either, so that if you actually catch someone in the act of taking your wallet or purse you will not get a lot of support - other than from sympathetic citizens - to hold them or bring them to justice. Having said this, I did see incidents of great honesty from citizens of Prague - on one occasion an ice cream vendor returned the 75 Euros mistakenly given to her when she charged 75 Crowns for an ice cream!! Be careful while walking in prague on the more touristic places and in the Metro. I heard a lot of people here in VT and also my friends at home that told me about pickpockets in the trams and metro , on charles bridge and the streets to the old city center so my bag was close to me all the time and on the side of my body and not on my back. when i took pictures i didnt put it on the ground and i also took small amount of money in my bag and the rest of the money was in the hotel or in a special bandage on my leg so no one will notice it. Heard lots about pickpokets in Prague. I live in London so I am naturally wary but for my friends from Devon this was a real threat and sometimes felt intimidated, especially in crowds (such as waiting for the Astronomical Clock in Staromestki Namesti to strike). Don't really know if their fears were justified as we experienced no problems - but better safe than sorry. Take a bag with a flap and wear it across your body with the flap towards you - we did and had no probs. Leave a Comment |
You have to pay a small fee normally 5 or 10CZK to use the restrooms. Sometimes this fee has also to be paid when you are in a restaurant. Keep this thing in mind , and always have small change in case you need to use the restrooms in a hurry !!! On a positive note, the restrooms are always clean , impeccable . Leave a Comment |

This is the astronomical clock. You must see this one because it is really beautiful to stay there when the clock starts its motion, but you must take care of your pockets, thiefs try to get your money while you look at the clock. Be careful. Leave a Comment |
Please be aware, that there are many pickpockets on the streets of Prague! Some guys try to show you the right way, but are looking for the direct way to your money! Some girls offer you XXX and grab between your legs. Watch out, the other hand i already in your pockets! Always have a hand on your wallet! Leave a Comment |
