With its dynamic curves, this church is one of the purest and most ambitious examples of high baroque. The celebrated architect Christoph Dientzenhofer began the Jesuit church in 1704 on the site of one of the more active Hussite churches of 15th-century Prague. Work on the building was taken over by his son Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer, who built the dome and presbytery. Anselmo Lurago completed the whole in 1755 by adding the bell tower. The juxtaposition of the broad, full-bodied dome with the slender bell tower is one of the many striking architectural contrasts that mark the Prague skyline. Inside, the vast pink-and-green space is impossible to take in with a single glance. Every corner bristles with movement, guiding the eye first to the dramatic statues, then to the hectic frescoes, and on to the shining faux-marble pillars. Many of the statues are the work of Ignaz Platzer, and in fact they constitute his last blaze of success. Platzer's workshop was forced to declare bankruptcy when the centralizing and secularizing reforms of Joseph II toward the end of the 18th century brought an end to the flamboyant baroque era. The tower, with an entrance on the side of the church, is open in summer. COST: 30 Kc. OPEN: Daily 9-4. Leave a Comment

by ChristaV A must for every tourist. With its ever changing mood this bridge gives you a lot whether you are just strolling around, looking at what the street vendors have to offer and listening to the musicians or just admiring the view. During high tourist season it gets really crowded which goes well with pickpockets, so keep a close eye on your belongings all the time!!! The bridge is 520 m long and 10 m wide and is the oldest stone bridge in Central Europe and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage List. In the late 17th century, aprox. 30 statues of saints and national patrons were added to the bridge. The most famous statue is the one of St. John Nepomuk. Supposedly, touching the image of the saint will bring you luck and ensure that you will return to Prague... it must work I have been back 5 times. by ChristaV Old Jewish Cemetery). This unforgettably melancholy sight not far from the busy city was, from the 15th century to 1787, the final resting place for all Jews living in Prague. The confined space forced graves to be piled one on top of the other. Tilted at crazy angles, the 12,000 visible tombstones are but a fraction of countless thousands more buried below. Walk the path amid the gravestones; the relief symbols you see represent the names and professions of the deceased. The oldest marked grave belongs to the poet Avigdor Kara, who died in 1439; the grave is not accessible from the pathway, but the original tombstone can be seen in the Maisel Synagogue. The best-known marker is that of Jehuda ben Bezalel, the famed Rabbi Loew (died 1609), a chief rabbi of Prague and profound scholar who is credited with creating the mythical Golem. Even today, small scraps of paper bearing wishes are stuffed into the cracks of the rabbi's tomb in the hope he will grant them. Loew's grave lies near the exit. COST: Combined ticket to museum sites and Old-New Synagogue 500 Kc; museum sites only, 300 Kc. OPEN: Apr.-Oct., Sun.-Fri. 9-6; Nov.-Mar., Sun.-Fri. 9-4:30. Leave a Comment

Housed in the 18th-century Sternberský palác (Sternberg Palace), this collection, though impressive, is limited compared to German and Austrian holdings. During the time when Berlin, Dresden, and Vienna were building up superlative old-master galleries, Prague languished, neglected by her Viennese rulers -- one reason why the city's museums lag behind. Part of the museum reopened in 2002 after a long renovation, but some floors are still closed. Works by Rubens and Rembrandt are already back on display, while some other key pieces in the collection are still waiting in the wings. Other branches of the National Gallery are scattered around town. COST: 60 Kc. OPEN: Tues.-Sun. 10-6. Leave a Comment

by Zajem The capital of Czech Republic - Prague has many bridges over the Vltava river (about 14). Last week (Dec. 15, 06) I stopped at Vysehrad station (the subway "C" route) and took a few pics at Vysehrad (I hope you will read something about Vysehrad on my pages soon, too), I also took a view of brigdes, Vltava river and Hradcany castle from Vysehrad hill. If you decide to make some trips by train from Prague the way to Plzen and Cheb, the railway track would lead you on this red railway bridge seen in front. Unfortunatelly, Carl's bridge is not seen from this place, because it is behind the curved river. Leave a Comment Address: Vysehrad hill

I guess, it is good to take a stroll at Vysehrad. You also can browse the cemetery with famous people of CZ on it, for example, you would see the sculptures or tombs of Czech composer Antonin Dvorak, Czech painter Mikolas Ales, or people who fought for democracy and against the comunism and were executed. One of them was Milada Horakova and others. The tomb rock of lower and politician Milada Horakova says - "Milada Horakova, June 26, 1950 - executed with no burial after. To victims and enemies of totalitarian regimes 1939 -1945, 1948 - 1989" Leave a Comment

The Troya chateau belongs among the most important shows of the chateau barogue architecture in Bohemia in the 17thcentury. Vaclav Vojtech the earl of Sternberk let to build a summer mension since 1679 year. Later he invited great artists from Europe. The building was designed by Giovanni Domenico Orsi, who was changed by Jean Baptiste Mathey soon. He changed the original conception to a very shapely disposition with the main hall in the center. This main hall was connected to the park by the monumental garden two-shouldered staircase.Decorations with statues is job of two broters, George and Paul Neummans' from Dresden (1685). Around 1705 year, the staircase was completed by Jan Brokof. The staircase is decorated by the statues of antic gods and goddesses, who represent the fight against Titans, as the old-greek story says. Proppably the name "Troya" comes from here, and later, it spreated all around the area. The roof and walls of the main hall are covered by mural with theme of Apotheosa victory over Turks by Vienna and celebrate the Habsburks that way. The murals were painted by Duch painters Abraham and Izak Godins. Italian painter Francisco Marchetti with his son Giovannim decorated contiguous rooms by murals with subjects of anthic mythology and for celebration of promoters of the chateau. In total, there are 4000m2 of the paintings and 1800m2 of it are in the main hall being used for concerts too. There are expositions of the Gallery of the capital Praha (GHMP). The chateau is surrounded by large french garden and decorated by terracotta vases, stucco prospects with statues of imperators. With its graceful, soaring towers, this Gothic cathedral -- among the most beautiful in Europe -- is the spiritual heart not only of Prague Castle but of the entire country. It has a long and complicated history, beginning in the 10th century and continuing to its completion in 1929. If you want to hear its history in depth, English-speaking guided tours of the cathedral and the Královský palác can be arranged at the information office across from the cathedral entrance. Once you enter the cathedral, pause to take in the vast but delicate beauty of the Gothic and neo-Gothic interior glowing in the colorful light that filters through the startlingly brilliant stained-glass windows. This western third of the structure, including the facade and the two towers you can see from outside, was not completed until 1929, following the initiative of the Union for the Completion of the Cathedral, set up in the last days of the 19th century. Don't let the neo-Gothic illusion keep you from examining this new section. The six stained-glass windows to your left and right and the large rose window behind are modern masterpieces. Take a good look at the third window up on the left. The familiar Art Nouveau flamboyance, depicting the blessing of Sts. Cyril and Methodius (9th-century missionaries to the Slavs), is the work of the Czech father of the style, Alfons Mucha. He achieved the subtle coloring by painting rather than staining the glass.
