My favorite building in Ceske Budejovice was across the street from Masny Kramy, on the corner of Krajinska and Hroznova Streets, the Komercni banka palace built during 1912-1913 in the Art Nouveau style. I believe it's still a bank but we didn't try to go in, the reference to the building I saw suggested that the interior might be interesting if you have a chance to go inside. Leave a Comment

Kratochvile - the entrance by globetrott Kratochvile means "amusement / fun / pleasure" in Czechia and it is the name of a small summer-castle about 40 Km west of Cesky Budejovice. You will have to take the street to Pisek first and finally follow the streets towards Netolice. To drive that distance will take about 1 hour on the small roads of that area. Leave a Comment

Kratochvile by globetrott The whole area is rather muddy and the castle is built on thousands of oak-trunks (like in Venice). These trunks have to be kept wet in order to be strong enough to hold the heavy building. That is one of the reasons, why the artificial lake around the castle had to constructed, and will permanentely be supplied with sufficient water. Leave a Comment

Kratochvile - interior by globetrott a great painted door will take you into one of the rooms with a lovely oven, made completely of tiles, and with another great ceiling. The building's outside fassade is under restauration at the moment, and at many places you may see also great frescos on the fassade. Leave a Comment

Kratochvile - interior by globetrott Kratochvile - inside the castle each room has different decorations on the ceilings. There is a permanent exhibition about "animated films" , that was not so very special... ...BUT the different paintings and graffitis were simply excellent and unique. Simply follow the signs through the rooms in order not to miss anything. Leave a Comment

Kratochvile - the church by globetrott Kratochvile - the church is the first place you will visit on the tour. They play choral-music inside the church all day long, turned off only during the tours. The church is rather small, but has a great ceiling with wonderful decorations. After visiting the church, I left the tour, as I had seen the castle already on my own, just with my camera Leave a Comment

Kratochvile by globetrott The entrance tower is still used today as the only entrance, with the ticket-office and souvenir-shop. Some parts of the castle may be visited by GUIDED tours only ( like the church ), while the castle itself may be entered also on your own. These guided tours are in Chech language only, but foreigners get in advance a leaflet with great explanations, that may be read before the tour. It is a pity I do not understand ANY Chechian... ...as the lady said something about Fotografia at the beginning - I am sure she was telling us, it is NO problem to take pics... :) ( as there were also NO signs telling me the contrary ) Leave a Comment

Kratochvile by globetrott Great frescos on the wall of the castle, that was used also for the living-quaters of the servants. Just walk around the whole walls, in order not to miss anything - the best frescos will be seen between the entrance-tower and the church ! Leave a Comment

Kratochvile - interior by globetrott Kratochvile - built for Vilem von Rosenberg who was a rich merchant and wanted to have a summercastle in the Italian Renaissance style. So he ordered this castle from his italian architect Baltazar Maggi di Arogno. Leave a Comment
