Hluboka Chateau by Dabs We finished up in Cesky Krumlov earlier than I expected so we asked what was nearby that we could see and they suggested the Hluboka Chateau just a few miles north of Ceske Budejovice. This was my favorite of the four castles/chateau that we visited, the sumptuously decorated interior, almost all done in wood, blew the interiors of the other three in Cesky Krumlov, Konopiste and Prague away. Make sure you go on a tour, even if it is only in Czech, they did have English text. We drove there and had a little difficulty figuring out where to park, we ended up parking by the visitors center and walking up the hill, only people with permits can park closer than that. If you are relying on public transport, there is a bus from Ceske Budejovice. Leave a Comment

Cesky Krumlov by Dabs If you are down in southern Bohemia, Cesky Krumlov is not to be missed. We had a car so we drove there, there are several daily buses if you don't. I think it was only around 20-25 km between the two, we were surprised at how quickly we got there. Most of the city is pedestrian only so find a parking lot and be sure to have small change to feed the meters and the town is just a short walk away. Most people visit to see the hilltop Krumlov Chateau (Krumlovsky zamek) and have a walk through the medieval city, if you are there during the warmer months there is also quite a bit of activity on the Vltava River, kayaks, rafts and inner tubes, make sure you arrange for these in advance or you may be subjected to standing there watching enviously. I'll have a Cesky Krumlov page up shortly. Leave a Comment

Fake facades by desert_princess The 133 square meters Market place is called The Premysla Otakara II square. The square is the natural center of the town. Many historical events took place here. In the middle of it there is the Samson fountain The square is surrounded by 48 houses with arcade, mostly renaissance and baroque. The fake facades - if you take a closer look you will see that the third house from left to right is much lower than the facade in front of it...thanx to globetrott and his page on Budweis I payed attention at that interesting detail..hehehe Leave a Comment

Ceske Budejovice - on the main square by globetrott Hotel Zwon consists of these four buildings on the main square. They have a great restaurant and terrace, and although they have a higher level of service and prices than the rest of the town, it is still quite moderate against the rest of Europe. Leave a Comment Directions: The hotel is opposite the townhall, directely on the main square

Ceske Budejovice - on the main square by globetrott On all the square you may find only houses with arcades for easy and dry shopping, even when it is raining. And of course, many of the restaurants and cafes also have a part of their guest-gardens inside these arcades. Leave a Comment Directions: These houses are close to the town hall, at the main square

by globetrott This fountain with plenty of great sculptures is the centre of the whole square. Plenty of benches are set around it and make a great place to relax and enjoy the panorama of the old buildings ! The fountain will be lighted at night. Leave a Comment Directions: The fountain is in the middle of the main square

Ceske Budejovice - on the main square by globetrott many of the fassades pretend to be much higher and bigger than the building are in reality : Simply have a look at them on the very top, where in many cases a steep gothic roof was hidden behind a baroque fassade. Therefore many of the windows on the top floors will not be real. Leave a Comment Directions: These buildings are on the town-square, close to the Black tower

The Black clock tower by desert_princess The Black tower is situated at one of the corners of the main square , opposite to the St Nicholas Cathedral. It was built by the town rulers in 1549-1577 as a bell tower and watchtower. It is 72m high , open to public and offers a bird's view over the city. Advices for the visitors of the tower - "Don't 's" Go carefully on the stairs up and down and thoughtful to other visitors, please. Don't smoke and help to keep the cleanness Don't push the bells of the tower to move Don't enter the wooden constructions of the ceilings... note of the author - Don't jump from the tower.- Actually you cannot do this anymore as they have put nets to prevent this . As it was the most polplar suicide place some years ago....So now if you want to kill yourself , try to jump from a bridge....that may do the difference... Leave a Comment Directions: Central square

by globetrott Don't miss this great example of an Art deco-fassade of 1898 - the building is in a side-street, next to the black tower. Have a look for the rich ornaments and great mosaiques around the balconies ! Leave a Comment Directions: This building is next to the black tower.

Hluboka castle - 8 Km north of Budweis by globetrott Just 8 Km north of Ceske Budejovice you may visit one of the most beautiful castles of the whole area. The castle of the 13th century was rebuilt in Tudor-style in order to look similar to Windsor castle. The interior is simply breath-taking ! For more infos and pics - please have a look on my Hluboka nad Vtavou-page ! Leave a Comment Directions: Take the road to the north and follow the signs for Hluboka !
