Ceske Budejovice - 100km south of Prague

by globetrott

Ceske Budejovice / Budweis is a lot more than just the home of the famous beer !The main square of Ceske Budejovice is one of the biggest squares of Europe. There is a great fountain in the middle and lots of wonderful baroque buildings around the square. On all the square you may find only houses with arcades for easy and dry shopping, even when it is raining. And of course, many of the restaurants and cafes also have a part of their guest-gardens inside these arcades. The townhall of Ceske Budejovice is quite impressive and looks great in its very special kind of architecture. The black tower is visible from almost every place and street in town, and might help you, when you are lost at night - after a few glasses of the famous local beer...And you may also step up the plenty steps to get the great view over the town and the square. Not far from the square you will see a museum for old...

Jindrichuv Hradec - east of Budweis

by globetrott

Jindrichuv Hradec / Neuhaus is a small town of 22.000 inhabitants, east of C.Budejovice / Budweis.Take a guided tour through the castle to see great works of art, gobelins, frescos and precious porcelain.Have a look as well at the garden-pavillion, where 4,5 kg gold were used for the decoration of the building in the 16th century.Have a look for the lovely town-square as well !

Cervena Lotha - north-east of C.Budejovice

by globetrott

Cervena Lhota is a lovely water-castle , 15km nort-west of Jindrichuv Hradec. This castle is often used by local people for their wedding-photos and it dates back to the 14th century.Around the castle there is a small lake and a large wood with plenty of hiking-paths.You may visit the castle inside daily except on mondays and the interior you will see dates back mainly to the 17th and 18th century. The road to Cervena Lotha is quite small and sometimes confusing because of missing signposts.

Trebon / Wittingau - not far from C.Budejovice

by globetrott

Trebon is another very interesting , small town in southern Bohemia, mostly overseen by tourists...Trebon is mainly known for its carps, growing up in the many lakes around town. For the tourists they have a perfect baroque townsquare, a lovely castle and great possibilities for hiking and easy biking in the flat landscape.Right in the centre of town the castle of Trebon was built by italian architects in 1562 for the Rosenberg-family.In 1660 it became a property of the Schwarzenberg family, who rebuilt a part of the castle. The big castle with a total of 4 courts has only a few rooms that are worth seeing for the ordinary tourists, some rooms are used as a gallery today, and the biggest part of the castle holds the state-archives and old documents of the Rozemberk-family.At a few places you may still see the original medieval town-wall and moat of Trebon / Wittingau. For more infos and...

Hluboka nad Vltavou - 10km west of Budweis

by globetrott

Hluboka castle was built already in the the 13th century.Later-on it was rebuilt several times and finally bought in 1661 by Jan Adolf I. von Schwarzenberg ( 1615-1685 ).The Schwarzenberg family had German and Dutch origin - this might be one of the reasons, why you see so plenty of great Dutch paintings and tapisseries inside the castle.Jan Adolf II. von Schwarzenberg ( 1779-1888) and his wife Eleonora ( von Liechtenstein ) was a great politician and used to travel often to England and finally decided to rebuild their castle in Tudor-style, similar to Windsor castle. And also the park around the castle reminds a lot of the famous english parks : In 1851 more than 11000 trees were planted, and plenty of them are still to be seen in the park around the castle, beeing almost as high as the castle today. For more infos and pics - please click on the link below and see my VT-page about Hluboka...

The 72 m Black Tower was built in 1553 and stands as a Gothic sentinel over the Baroque 18th century main square called Namesti Premysla Otakara II, providing great views of the entire city from atop. Samson's Fountain from 1727 anchors what is certainly the largest square in the Czech Republic and amongst the largest in all of Europe.

This former church and hospice dates back to the 13th century and was utilized for the care of older city estate workers until 1922. This photo also demonstrates the severly high water levels of the Vltava River in the spring of 2002.

the colorful round tower

by richiecdisc

The oldest part of the castle is the incredible frescoed round tower that gives the town its fairy tale impression. Built in the middle of the 13th century, it is painstakingly well kept and you feel privileged to wander its grounds. A very popular site are the bears that are kept in the moat that surrounds the castle.
