Blansko Things to Do

  • Boat Cruise on the Underground Punkvá...

The last part of the visit is done by boat. The boats are powered by electricity and take you along the river which runs through narrow caves, underneath high Karrens in the ceiling, through chambers and over small underground lakes which they call "fairytale lakes". Halfway the boat stops at another landing and you are taken on a short walk to the...

  • At the Bottom of Macocha Abyss

Awesome. Breathtaking. Jawdropping. All these adjectives do not fully describe the effect. You leave a narrow dark tunnel and all of a sudden there is daylight. You find yourself underneath an enormous half-dome of rock, facing vertical walls of rock which reach a height of more than 130 metres, an oval opening with tiny trees far up on the rim. At...

  • The Flowstone Cave

The visit begins with a walk on dry ground through a series of chambers and domes with beautiful flowstones. A detailed description of the caves in English can be found on this page so I won't repeat it all here. The photos give you an idea what to expect. I especially admired the Mirror Lake (photo 1) with its reflections. Two of the many...

  • The Surrounding Landscape

The Moravian karst consists of soft limestone which is prone to erosion. Water has formed deep-cut valleys and countless caves. Dolines are the result of the roof of a cave crashing down. The hills and slopes are covered in dense forest whereever there is soil and solid ground for the trees. Among the treetops vertical limestone rocks appear. It is...

  • Starting Point: Skalní mlyn

The old water mill at the beginning of the valley has been turned into the visitors centre for the caves, together with a restaurant, a fastfood place and some souvenir shops - i.e. everything a visitor would need. Tickets to the cave must be bought resp. picked up at the visitors centre, cable car tickets, photo permits and tickets for the little...

  • Show Caves

The show caves are the real reason for going there. The biggest and best has to be Punkevní jeskyne.See the official website for more details. Better that than having me plagiarise or copy and paste other peoples' work!

  • Punkva Caves

In the Punkevni Caves you often have to go through tunnels like on the picture. It leads you to the bottom of Macocha abyss and to the underground river Punkva, on which you can make a boat trip.

  • A Road Train

From the Punkva cave you can take a road train, which brings you to other two caves, the Katerinska cave and the Balcarka. Of course you can walk – takes abt. 25 min.

  • Stalactite and stalagmite

One of many stalactite and stalagmite formations in the Punkva Caves. It is very impressive to see so much beauty. Please note that in the caves the temperature is 7-8 degrees Celsius.

  • The Cable Car

The cable car takes you up to the top rim of Macocha abyss. The view must be breathtaking. We did not use it, though. The schedule of our tour was tight and did not include the cable car (we saw the gorge from the bottom during the cave walk) - for which I was glad because I am scared of heights and hate these swaying things... But I wanted to...

  • Walk to the Cave

The walk from Skalní mlyn to the entrance of the cave is about 2 kms, 20-25 minutes. It is an easy walk on a paved road, no traffic except the vlácek, and entirely flat. You walk along the bottom of the Punkvá valley along the river. Most of the way is in the forest, hence pleasantly shaded on hot summer days, a bit chilly if the weather is cool.

  • Vlácek - The Little Train

The distance from Skalní mlyn to the entrance of the cave and the cable car is about 2 kilometres. If you don't want to walk for whichever reason, you can take the "vlácek" (with v-shaped thingy on the c), which translates to "little train" or, for the Badener, "Bähnle". It is not a real train but one of those tourist choo-choo trains, the...

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Activities include the guided tour of the flowstone caves, Macocha gorge and the boat ride on the subterranean river, and the cable car to the rim of Macocha gorge. The visitors centre at Skalní mlyn is your address for all tickets (although I think you can also obtain them on the spot, but not sure).

In addition to the full tour of the cave there is also the option to do only the walk in the flowstone cave, or just a boat ride, but I recommend having the full tour.
Fee for the full tour: adults CZK 170, seniors 65 and over CZK 150, children/concessions CZK 80. Details in Czech here

Opening hours: They open in the morning at 8:20 or 8:40 and close early, either 14:00 or 16:00 depending on weekday and season. So time your visit accordingly, best thing is going as early in the morning as you can manage.

The temperature inside the cave is about 9°C all year round, and humidity is high, which means a bit of dripping water. Bring a jacket and sweater.

Moderate walking fitness is required. The walk in the cave is about 800 metres and quite easy to walk but it involves some ascents and descents on stairways. Climbing in and out of the boats will also be a problem for people with walking difficulties.

Fondest memory: Not "fondest" but important: The cave is popular, also visited by many tour groups, and the number of tours and visitors is limited. In other words, tickets can sell out, like they were when we visited in late August. Reserving tickets in advance is a wise idea.
The English pages about the cave do not have this vital bit of information. Only the Czech version of the official page displays the contact data of the visitors centre at Skalní mlyn; you will find it on the website even without being able to read Czech. You can contact them either by phone, by fax or by e-mail.
Phone numbers for reservations: 516413575 or 516410024, fax 516415379.
