Trains leave roughly every hour from Prague's Smichov Station (in the southwest corner of the city, part of the subway system). Often the trains are called by their terminating station, and the one to Karlstejn usually finishes its run in Beroun, so listen for the "Beroun" train on the platform. When in Karlstejn listening for the return train, the Czech stationmasters call out "Praha-Smichov" which sounds like "Pra-Smichov." This will be your return train, which usually arrives and departs on-time.

It certainly is the best to WALK uphill to the castle.
At the big parking you might see the warning :
2,3 km to the castle & 12% uphill...
The last bit of the street is in fact a bit steep, but you may walk there easily within 15-20 minutes and will pass by plenty of shops and opportunities to spend money....
...AND you will have plenty of great places to take pics of the castle, as it will appear step by step and will look differently every few meters.
That way you will also pass by the art gallery and the Bethlehem-exhibition !

Minibuses will take you for 100 Kronen from the big parking to the castle !
BUT the driver will not start before a certain number of passengers has taken a seat and that way you might loose a lot of the precious time.
You will also miss a lot of opportunities to take pics of the castle on your way up, and when you intend to walk down, you have the castle in your back...
These Minibuses will not start before 09.00 a.m.

Plenty of horse-carriages will wait for you at the big parking and as soon as enough passengers have taken a seat, they will start to slowly go uphill for a fee of 150 Kronen a person.
If you have enough time, this might be a good idea, if you are in a hurry, take a taxi or walk.
On a busy day the carriages will have to "fight" against busloads of people walking up- or downhill...

When you are able to plan your visit in Karlstejn castle well ahead and when you are looking for a transportation by a vintage car, just click on the link below.
This might certainly be really good idea for a special occasion, wedding-aniversery or simply as a surprise...
1200 Kronen per car, per hour, for the transportation from Prague to Karlstejn is not really expensive at all in my humble opinion, as the price is for 2 people...
(On the sign in Karlstejn they posted 800 Kronen per car for the transport, but that price seems to be outdated, when you look on the webpage .)
On my pic : vintage cars that I saw in Prague, to be rented by tourists - maybe the cars of this company look a bit different, but certainly not much !!

When you go to Karlstejn by your private car, you have to simply follow the signs - it is really well explained !
On the other hand the biggest part of the road is rather narrow and a lot of bikers might get you into trouble, when you cannot overtake them.
IN the village of Karlstejn you will have NO other parking-spaces than the big car-park with a daily fee of 70 Kronen for cars and motorhomes, beeing not higher than 2,70 meters.
When your car is higher it will cost you 290 Kronen for the full day !
All parking-spaces are without a bit of a shadow & you might be grilled for free, when you return...

Karlstejn-tours will be offered to you by all the companies in Prague - you certainly cannot miss them !
Simply make sure you also see the right things there - according to your interest !!
When you see all the other pages about Karlstejn, you will realize, almost nobody has a single tip about the museum of Nativity Scenes or the Wax museum, simply as these "Fast-food-tours" go to the castles, maybe a shopping centre and go home again...

The best way to go to Karstajn from Prague is to take train on Hlavni Nadraži. The ticket costs 46 CZK, and it takes 43 minutes to get to Karlstejn. First train goes from Hlavni at 08.26. It runs every hour till 12.26. Then it starts to go every half an hour (12.56, 13.26, 13.56...). From 19.26 it again starts to go on full hour (19.26). Last train on Hlavni for Karlstajn you can catch at 00.26.
It is very nice to take this trip, you will enjoy landscape. Also ou will have a bit longer walk to reach the castle, but it is not any kind of problem, quite nice walk!

I took nice modern double decker train from Prague to Karlstejn. The trip took about 40 min and the price was approximately 2 euros. When you get off the train it is quite clear where to go to castle – signs show it. it is 1,5 kilometers from the train station.
