While on a winter walk to see Karlstejn Castle, my husband and I stopped at the Karlsejn Wax Museum (more to warm up than to see the figures.) We were very suprised to see a nice display of the Czech Republic's historical figures.
We were most impressed by the kaleidoscope cinema film of the Czech Republic. The film is shown in an optical globe where, with the assistance of mirrors and back projection, the viewer is treated to a unique flick displayed on an "imaginary seventy-meter high ball."

the building in the center of the picture is the imperial palace. it is the only part of the castle you see on tour 1. the first floor of the palace was used by knights and courtiers. the second floor are the private rooms of charles IV. also you can see the impressive vassels hall.

i arrived from prague by train and across the street was a restaurant. my first impression was that i was in the village of karlstejn. wrong ! i had to walk down a street to the car park then across a bridge over the berounka river. the walk took about 10 minutes. but at least the ground was flat.

pictured is a statue of st. sebastian on the road up to karlstejn castle. a great place to stop and catch your breath. this is approximately the half way point to the castle. by the way, st. sebastian was a christian martyr who was killed in 287AD during the rule of emperor dioclentian. almost every work of art shows sebastian tied to a tree and shot with arrows. actually sebastian was clubbed to death. a little known bit of trivia that has absolutely nothing to do with karlstejn.

finally after a 15 minute walk i have reached karlstejn village. the street is lined with tourist shops, cafes, and restaurants. good news-bad news. i have reached the village but now the road gets steep.

If you get the opportunity, climb in Karlstejn. I'm sure it isn't difficult for advanced climbers, but for the rest of us, including absolute beginners it is a great fun place.
A local climbing school use an old quarried cliff face which has many different degrees of difficulty. They are a professional set up so don't be too worried about taking your children - they ensure the highest levels of safety are carried out.
