it is quite a hike up to the castle. from the car park you can take a horse drawn cart or a taxi up to the castle. tourists are not allowed to drive in the village. these are good options if you are short on time or if walking is a problem. the walk down the hill from the castle is very pleasant.

from prague you can take a train to karlstejn (direction beroun). the trains leave prague central station about every half hour during the day and the trip takes about 45 minutes. once you arrive at karlstejn station you have a 30 minute walk up to the castle.

If you travel to the area by car or coach, you have to park approximately 2kms from the castle and walk the rest of the way past all the touristy outlets. There are alternatives to walking horse drawn carriages and local taxis can drop you off at the castle. But you will miss the splendid views of the castle as you walk up the hill to its location.

You will exit near Beroun off of the Praha-Plzen highway, and just follow the signs. The parking lot is South of the castle and the unavoidable souvenir stalls. It is 30CZK for 40 min or 60CZK for a whole day.
My VW Polo cost $39/day from Advantage.
Alternatively you can take a train from Smichov station and walk from the town to the castle.
