The XIII century castle Krivoklat is set in the spectacular valley of Berounka river on a very high promontory above the village of Krivoklatsko. It served as the royal hunting lodge in the Middle Ages, and Karl IV spent his childhood here.
The area around the castle is a UNESCO nature preserve.

The castle is located to the West of Karlstejn, its more celebrated neighbor, on the other side of the Praha-Plzen highway. You either take this highway to Beroun, exit and follow the signs to Krivoklat or exit the Karlovy Vary highway in Unhest and follow signs South. The second road is recommended as it will take you through a beautiful forested hilly country and a twisty road (I had to go in II or at most III gears most of the way.)
The best rates I found were with Dvorak rent-a-car, which is a subsidiary of Advantage. They rent small VW's, and I got a Polo 1.2 with a/c for $39/day plus insurance.
