    The railway station in Krnov

by Zajem Updated Feb 24, 2009

Train is a good way how you also can get to Krnov. There are two train stations - Krnov and Krnov-Cvilin. Fast trains as stright connection Olomouc -> Krnov go 7 minutes past each unequal hour.

If you go from Ostrava (Svinov), stright fast trains go 6 minutes past each even-numbered hour. You also can go by train five past unequal hour (local trains), but have to change trains in Opava.

For the second visit of Krnov and its area I chose the second lookout tower (wooden) built on the Vyhlidka hill (552 m) - 7 km west of Krnov. Unfortunatelly, as you can see in the pic, while taking a trip to this tower, I was not lucky with the weather. There in the mist, you can see the Cvilin hill (above the curved tree top, almost on the horisont) and, of course, with town Krnov under.

Entire hight of obseravation tower including its antene is 17,5 m and the hight of observation floor is in 13,6 m.

Pros: this tower is free of charge

    Cons:
Please, be aware, when going upstairs. The tower is not covered, nor steps, which means, the steps can slide, mainly in winter, when snow on steps is down at heel. I just didn't go on the top of the tower during my second visit of this place.

    My first visit to Krnov.
I like sights from a outlook tower. There are at least three outlook towers near Krnov. One of them - walled one, is 2 km east of town centre of Krnov, on Cvilin hill. This hill is aslo a pilgrim place. When the weather conditions are good you even can see Praded Mt. (1491 m) as the highest peak of Jeseniky Mts and of west half of the Czech republic - Moravia in one, distanced 35 km by air W of this outlook tower on the Cvilin hill.

Hight of outlook tower is 29 m. There is also the outlook floor on this level.
Opened daily May - September 10.00 am - 5.00 pm
    Entrance - 20,- Kc
    Number of stairs - 144

As I mentioned earlier, the pilgrim church is one of dominations on the hill. This pilgrim church was found by P. Cornelius Ottweiler as the head of local minor monastery. In 1684, he decided about foundation of wooden chapel of Panna Maria Bolestna on thius place. But not long after local church was not able to place all prayerfull people inside. These untill today hallow St. Panna Maria in two paintings painted by citizen and councelman Heinrich Teuber.
For this reason there was built a new church in 1722-28 years by A. and G Gans', father and son, architect from Krnov, beautiful fresco decoration was made by painter F. Eckstein from Brno.

In 1786, the emperor Joseph II. enjoined to close the church and established to destroy, but the church was bought for 406 florins by 4 townsmen. The church was reopened already 9 years later, but the first there had to be built a settlement "Marianske pole" with 18 houses to be reason of reopen for the people. The minorits were not allowed to care of the church, so the church went under the ownership of the town Krnov. Minorits got the church again in 1940 by exchange for the property, because increased Krnov needed it.

In 1865 large fire damaged and insinerated also the roof and towers of the church. In following two years everything could again be repaired thanks to collections of then vicar Heinrich. The second war in 1945 very damadged the church. Of iniciative of S. Vavrecka as new chief of Minorits monastery the church was renovated in September of 1947. Then there followed hard communist times and the church came back to Minorits after 1989 year.
