Valdstejn castle - 25km south of Liberec

by globetrott

Waldstejn castle was built on top of 3 huge rocks of sandstone that were combined by bridges.More than 250 meters in length and at the smallest place not much wider than 10 meters. In the 17th century the castle had been burned down, and was not any more comfortable and safe enough to live there, so the owners had the idea to build a pilgrim church, also in order to show, that their origin was noble and firm in catholic faith. The church was built by the architects M.A.Canevalli OR by F.M.Kanka ( funny to read this in one of the written infos, I got at the entrance to the castle - so it is still not clear, who finally was the architect...)Have a look around in the church it really looks nice !The living-rooms are in the very last part of the castle. This part of the castle was partly adapted and modernized after the castle was sold by the Wallenstein-family to Graf von Aehrenthal in...

"Trosky" is the Czech name for ruin, and the Trosky castle ruins may be seen from almost any place in the area of the so-called Boheman Paradise. In the 14th century the castle was built on 2 high rocks, about 10 Km south/east of Turnov.Alexander von Humboldt an J.W.von Goethe were fascinated by the beauty of this great landmark.Trosky castle is open April+Oct. 09.00a.m. - 04.00 p.m.May-Sep. 08.00a.m. - 05.00 p.m.

Hruba Skala - 30 km south of Liberec

Hruba Skala / Bohemian Paradise is a unique landscape with giant rocks of sandstone set in the most unique way...Bohemian Paradise is a perfect place to go hiking, biking or climbing. There is a tiny gorge between the giant stones, and it is leading up to the castle. At some places it is less than half a meter wide, but concrete-steps had been added for safe climbing up.The castle dates back to gothic times.Hruba Skala castle ( Zamek = castle ) is a hotel today, but it is also open for visitors against a small entrance-fee of 20 Kronen ( 0,7 Euro) and you may climb up the tower in order to have a perfect panorama-view.

Frydland castle - 30km north of Liberec

by globetrott

Frydland castle dates back to the 13th century and was already open for visitors in the 19th century. It actually is the oldest museum-castle in Europe. You may visit the castle ONLY with a GUIDED tour, at fixed times.Photography INside the castle is forbidden !! :-((Inside the castle-walls you have the feeling to be lost in a labyrinth of gates, corridors and walls. You will have to get through several walls and gates, before you may enter the inner-castle.In some of my books I read, that Franz Kafka thought of this castle, when he wrote his novel "Das Schloss" / "the castle".It is about someone, who gets lost in the labyrinth of courts, gates and walls inside a big castle.Tickets are rare and english- or german-speaking tours are only possible upon prior demand, or maybe when-ever enough tourists ask for a tour.Otherwise it is in Czech language only and costs 200 Kronen. The guide will...

Liberec - 100 km north-east of Prague

by globetrott

Liberec / Reichenau is the 3rd largest city in Czechia today with about 100.000 inhabitants. It is Czechia's centre of Wool- and Textile-production. In 1906 Lidove Sady, Bohemia's first Zoo was built in Liberec.Liberec / Reichenau had a majority of German speaking inhabitants at 1938, when it became the administrative capital of the " Sudetenland " that was occupied by Germany during the 2nd WW.Most of the Czech population had to leave the town immediately, being expelled by the german troops...After WW II the germans were expelled from Liberec, and lost all of their properties there. At some places of Liberec / Reichenberg you may still see the glory and prosperity of the times around the end of the 19th century, the time, when architects from Vienna were ordered to build more or less copies of buildings of Vienna. The townhall, built 1888-93 by architect Franz von Neumann, is a good...

Prachen and Panska Skala / Herrenhausfelsen

by globetrott

Panska Skala / Herrenhausfelsen is a volcanic rock-formation similar to the one of Giant Causeway and the island Staffa in Scotland !Every book uses another expression for this unique wonder of nature. In german guidebooks they still use the german expression, as it was once part of Austria. In local Czech maps you better search for "Panska Skala" or maybe for the small village of "Prachen" ( but it is not always listed on a map)" The Stone Organ of Kamenicky Senov " is another expression somtimes to be found in guidebooks.Inside a very small area around the small vulcanic pond you will find thousands of Basalt- octagons of vulcanic origin. The Basalt was pressed out of the vulcan by such pressure, millions of years ago, that it made that regular octagons that you may see still today. The rock is just about 200 meters from the main road and you may enter it freely and without any...
